Chapter 8: Parsing and Using Feeds
06/05/2005 11:48 PMIn this section, we'll look at the two major alternatives for parsing
feeds, MagpieRSS and the Ultraliberal Feed Parser. Both parsers are
libraries, both convert feeds into native data structures and neither
cares whether a feed is RSS 1.0, RSS 2.0 or Atom. By O'Reilly. 0603

01/26/2004 03:30 AMMikel Maron (who used to work at MyYahoo) gives his insider
perspective as to the new RSS enabled MyYahoo.
For me, this is all key - as now our PeopleAggregator can have a
personality - that's a MyYahoo account. That personality can
then sit next to similar 'external' personalities - importing not only
traditiobnal FOAF people-social net info, but also web links,
classified ads, blog posts, email, RSS feeds, and even internal
messages.
Having MyYahoo work in this universe is the first step to a
world of inter-connected distributed presence on teh web.
some
thoughts on My Yahoo RSS Headlines Beta. some thoughts on My
Yahoo RSS Headlines Beta
Congrats to everyone at My Yahoo -- this means big things for Yahoo
and the Web. I have a scattering of accolades, criticisms, tips, and
next step suggestions.
The module is very useable, particularly with the great faq's and
surprisingly good (still with room for improvement) RSS feed search.
Technically, the back end must be solid for this to go beta -- we'll
see how it scales. Nice touches with OPML import (though no play
friendly OPML export), and update API.
One thing that current RSS users will immediately jump on is the 25
feed limit -- however the real limit is 150, as I'll show, which
should satisfy most human beings. You can add the module to any page
at http://my.yahoo.com/p
review/ycontent.html. Each page has its own list of feeds and
you can add up to 6 pages to My Yahoo. Users will quickly want a
single page to manage all their feeds.
This is the presentation that inspired myRadio.
More presentation options are needed in the module, particularly order
by date and hiding read articles. However, both of these features
would increase the computation load significantly.
When Yahoo Clubs merged with Yahoo Groups, My Yahoo lost a great module.
Though, RSS Headlines provides a stop gap -- just add the RSS feed for
your Yahoo Groups subscriptions. One problem is that Yahoo Groups
produces RSS is reverse order, so you'll see the oldest messages
first. Maybe with this new architecture in place for RSS, it will be
easy to resurrect the Groups module.
Companion is calling out
for integration. It could display a Subscribe To icon when it
autodiscovers RSS feeds during browsing.
Wonder why this rdf feed doesn't
work for the module? Wonder if they'll support Atom, and blogger?
Would that require a name change for the module?
Many users are moving from a browser-centered world. Will My
Yahoo grab this next opportunity with more haste? My Yahoo has lots of
great content - quotes, weather, sports, movie listings, ski reports,
tv - that would make great RSS feeds. There is a business model, as
part of a Premium Package or in feed advertisements.
But whatever I ramble, it's a great great thing to see RSS in My!

Cleaning Out My Feeds
"I'm cleaning out my RSS feeds. Things that'll get feeds
removed:
1) If I haven't read you for months.
2) If you don't
publish full content feeds.
3) If you haven't published
for months." [Scobleizer:
Microsoft Geek Blogger]
Emphasis above is mine. If I'm busy and I only have so much
time to read what's in my aggregator on a given night, the feeds with
the 20 words of content definitely get the shortest shrift (pun
intended). It's an efficiency thing for me and I know I'm not
alone in this, which is why I hope libraries that offer feeds either
provide full text or provide two feeds, one abridged and one
unabridged.
Netflix RSS feeds?
Netflix RSS feeds?
05/31/2004 10:12 AM
Watching movies in the age of the Internet is way different.
Now I can look something up after watching a movie, like for example,
did you know how many future stars were in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest?
It's pretty amazing. Scatman Crothers, Danny DeVito, Christopher
Lloyd.
Last night I went to see
Troy with a friend, a perfectly awf
ul movie. So much for the theory that I like everything. This one
just goes on and on. At one point the camera focuses on an old man who
at first looks like he might be Peter O'Toole. Oh good, we'll have
some real acting now, I
said to myself. But on closer examination, it's just a sad old man,
not O'Toole. And the acting continues to be absolutely terrible. The
best moments are when Brad Pitt preens, looking beautiful. And that's
pretty bad. Anyway on getting home I looked up some reviews, and hold on, that was Peter O'Toole. Holy
hanna. He's aged so poorly, and has become a really shitty actor (or
is it really shitty direction). Either way, a shame.
It seems that Netflix
would be just the kind of network service to give me an RSS feed I can
subscribe to, where they would give me interesting articles about
movies I just saw, or ones I'm about to see, or movies playing near my
house that I would probably like, movies my friends liked, etc etc.
They already do a bunch of stuff like that on their site, so why not
do it in a feed?
Also, did I write this just so I could include a picture of a youngish Jack Nicholson?
I'm not telling.

Identity Theft Insurance
Identity Theft Insurance
03/22/2005 04:32 PMAllstate launches identity theft
coverage in Tennessee: Allstate insurance has started offering
identity-theft insurance as a rider to homeowners' policies.
Allstate's new identity theft expenses coverage is available for
Allstate homeowners and renters in Tennessee for approximately $30 a
year. It provides customers access to professional identity
restoration assistance. If a customer chooses to do the work on their
own, Allstate's policy provides up to $25,000 in reimbursement
coverage for expenses incurred to restore their identity, including
attorney fees, loan reapplication fees, credit report fees, and lost
wages.
Along with spam, identify theft is another parasite propeled by the
Net. Funny how these things open up entire revenue streams of their
own. For every problem, there is a solution...and someone who will
sell it to you.
I wonder if they could increate the premium based on Net usage? Do
they Google for you before they write the policy?

Can't Blame The Messenger For Identity
Theft Security Problems
03/31/2005 04:50 PMWith all of the various data security holes reported over the past few
weeks, one aspect that didn't get much coverage was how some of them
were discovered. The guy who found out that an online payroll company
was exposing plenty of personal data has written up his experience
claiming that
PayMaxx threatened to sue him for pointing out the flaw. They
said it was a violation of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act -- even
though he was just trying to protect his own and others' content.
With such an experience behind him, he's pointing out that any real
attempt to stop identity theft needs to explicitly allow "white hat"
hacking. This way, those who are simply trying to help companies find
the security flaws in their system are protected. It's basically a
question of whether or not the messenger should be blamed. Still,
many will point out that there's a fine line between good Samaritan
hacking and malicious hacking -- and some worry that malicious hackers
will start claiming good intentions when they're caught. However, if
the boundaries are made clear, this shouldn't be a huge problem.

NY AG Wants Do Not Identity Theft Law
NY AG Wants Do Not Identity Theft Law
04/18/2005 02:28 PMNew York's Attorney General (and gubernatorial candidate) Eliot
Spitzer seems to show up wherever there's an issue that's getting a
lot of press. He took on Wall Street companies, spammers and
insurance scammers among many others. So, is it really any surprise
that he's now decided to
take on identity theft? Of
course, there already are laws against identity theft and fraud.
While they could be made better, it's not clear that's what's
happening here. In fact, one of the proposed laws speaks directly to
all of those recent data leaks from ChoicePoint, LexisNexis and
others. It would create a "Do Not Share" list that people could sign
up for, forbidding any of these companies to share your data. While
this might sound good on its face, it seems to be based on the idea
that there really isn't a good reason for companies to ever share your
data -- which isn't quite true. Many of the conveniences we have
these days is because of the data that's available. Granted, in
plenty of cases it may have gone too far, and these companies have
done a dreadful job -- but a full stop "do not share" list (which many
people would quickly sign up for without realizing the impact) could
greatly inconvenience many people. A much more reasonable solution
isn't to ban all sharing of information, but to give people more
control and visibility into (1) what information companies have about
them and (2) how it's being used. That way, individuals can work to
prevent the misuses, while still getting the benefits.

09/02/2004 05:50 PMMSNBC, which has been covering identity theft stories for quite some
time, is now running a
very long excerpt from a
book about identity theft called
<
i>Your Evil Twin : Behind the Identity Theft Epidemic. It
goes over the stories of a few of the biggest identity theft criminals
around, showing just how they impersonated the rich and famous to take
their money. The scary part, of course, was just how easy it was --
and how unsophisticated the scams really were. While the press hyped
up the capture of one of the criminals, in looking at the details, it
becomes clear that the guy made a lot of silly mistakes (such as using
the same free email account for a variety of his scams -- often within
the same bank). The real culprit is the system by which the credit
card companies and the credit bureaus run their businesses. As it
stands, they have very little incentive to actually secure the system.
Instead, they let it the crimes occur, and let everyone else deal
with the mess.

with 42% of complaints concerning the crime (up from 40% the year

despite all this identity theft, we still haven't done much to prevent
it. It still seems like most lawmakers and authorities don't see it
as a serious problem.

methamphetamine. That was certainly true of the
profile
of an identity theft ring we wrote about last year, but it seems
like focusing on that aspect shouldn't be useful for very long. With
the rate at which identity theft crime is growing, it seems likely
that it, too, will start to get taken over by organized crime groups -
and will become increasingly sophisticated. In other words, if you
thought identity theft was bad now, it's only going to get worse. At
what point will credit agencies and financial institutions realize
that
they need to take the issue of identity theft more
