Amazon shoppers now have something new they can spend their money on -- the presidential candidates of their choice. The new feature, which allows visitors to make contributions of up to $200 to their favorite candidate, is an effort "to take the friction out of grassroots contributions to presidential candidates," according to the Amazon Web
site. For that reason it is not endorsing any candidates and is charging each campaign its usual processing fees, which will be donated to a nonprofit, non-partisan group. "For us, we think this is an interesting but natural extension of what we do every day. Our goal here was to make it as easy for people to make contributions to presidential campaigns as it is to buy the latest Harry Potter book," says an Amazon spokesman. [Reuters 24 Jan 2004]

State Politicians Don't Understand P2P
Either
08/05/2004 03:50 AM
What is it with the difficulty politicians seem to have understanding what a P2P file sharing network is, and why none of the networks have control over the content being shared? The latest is that a group of 40 states have teamed up to write a threatening letter to file sharing companies accusing them of all sorts of bad things. In whose name are they doing this? Even though the courts have recognized file sharing networks for what they are, it appears that the state attorneys general seem to believe that they can ignore what the law says when the entertainment industry starts telling them how evil file sharing networks are. Update: Ernest Miller asks, "why shouldn't the state attorneys general condemn email and FTP as well? An awful lot of child porn is shared via email. Shouldn't email providers be doing more to stop it?"

Damn you Japanese politicians!

Damn you Japanese politicians! 05/08/2004 07:53 AM

I rarely say "fuck" on my blog, but "Fuck you Japanese politicians!" (Lucky the FCC doesn't control my blog... yet.) I've paid about 1/2 of all of my life earnings in tax to the Japanese government and have paid my premiums to the national pension system even though studies that I worked on at the Association of Corporate Executives showed that I would most likely not benefit from these pensions. Now it turns out many Japanese politicians don't pay their national pension premiums. Actually, a third of the cabinet members haven't paid their pension premiums. The "Vice President" of Japan, Yasuo Fukuda just resigned for not paying his premiums. This is all amid a move by the government to increase premiums and lower pay-outs. The study we did showed that unless you were about retirement age today, would would most likely receive "0" from the pension system.

What's worse is that they use strong arm tactics like using the agricultural union (which hires retired bureaucrats and takes a commission) and other semi-public organizations to collect premiums from average citizens.

This is totally disgusting and I really wonder why I live and pay taxes in such a corrupt country.

Sorry I don't have links and references. This is a spur of the moment emotional post based on newspapers and radio that I skimmed today while I was trying to relax.

Support our troops, question our
politicians

Support our troops, question our
politicians
03/19/2003 10:25 PM
I have read various calls today for people to support our troops by stopping demonstrating, stopping questioning our (supposed) leaders, and stopping being against the war. What ridiculous nonsense. While I agree that it would be despicable to repeat the folly of some Vietnam era protesters who took out their anger about the United States government's Vietnam folly on the soldiers who fought it, the best way to support our troops is to question our leaders. Our troops are the sons and daughters of America, and it is our government that is wagering their lives. Our Congress effectively abdicated its constitutional responsibilities last fall. It would be unpatriotic of us not to question what the administration is doing with our children's lives, and not to protest if we think that our children's lives are being misspent. Backing us up is the authority of Dubya's favorite president, who said:

To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.

Theodore Roosevelt

Or there is that other famous dissident, Abraham Lincoln, who protested that the Mexican-American war was an unnecessary and unconstitutional war of conquest, designed to add more slave states to the union. He was right, of course. It was a direct precursor to our Civil War. The United States has a long and glorious history of dissent to war. Let's support our troops and our country by ensuring that it continues.

In the morning, I'm keynoting a conference of research librarians and am doing a mainly-new presentation about how we managed to "informationalize" the world so that it consists of thin gruel, and how it is...

A group of spam hating politicians in the UK have teamed up with a group of spam hating politicians in the US to... well, let's see, it doesn't really say what they're going to do. At best, it looks like they'll get together once a year (either here or there) to talk about spam. Well, that's a relief. A once yearly cross-Atlantic gathering of politicians who hate spam. It's not like spammers are likely to make adjustments or anything to whatever weak piece of legislation comes out -- assuming any legislation does come out of this.

Infringement When It Works For Them
02/12/2004 12:35 PM
While House and Senate elected officials have made big deals out of the importance of intellectual property, it hasn't been on the radar screen of the Bush/Cheney administration... or has it? NBC got angry that the campaign released an online commercial for the President using footage from an interview done on NBC. The campaign insists they've done nothing wrong. Does that mean they're supporters of "fair use"? Chances are they've never actually thought about the issue, and this is yet another case of politicians who would push for more stringent intellectual property laws, while making sure to ignore them themselves when convenient.

The Science Advisory Board polled almost 1,000 individuals about who should set guidelines for the types of biodefense research projects that are considered legitimate. The majority of respondents, 72%, claimed that scientists are best qualified to establish research guidelines when dealing with potential bioterrorism agents. Interestingly, ethicists were selected over politicians by three to one as the next best-qualified professionals to help determine a biodefense research agenda. [PRWEB Jul 1, 2004]
