Aren't Cellphones Annoying? And What's
Up With Those PDAs?

There was a time where I thought my career was going
to be in that sparkling sugarplum factory known as "computers," but
reading columns like this one by Robert J. Samuelson has convinced me
that my career in "journalism" is much more suited to my desire to
string lots of curmudgeonly words together and get paid for it. This
week's insightful column? "A Cell Phone? Never for Me." You fight that
power, Samuelson. (I especially like the part where he notes that he
has also "resisted ATM cards, laptops, and digital cameras." This is
the part where Zombie Thoreau puts down his cell phone and slaps the
wax out of him.)
So that's journalism, I guess. I can't wait until I'm old and can
write columns for Newsweek like, "What's Up With Mustard?" and "Holo
Porn? It's 2D for Me."

PDAs Are Dead; Long Live PDAs
04/12/2004 09:59 AMJOEL JOHNSON -- So PDA sales are falling, while smartphone shipments
are up. According to some, like The Dallas Morning News' Doug Bedell,
this means that PDAs are dying. To others, like Brighthand's Ed Hardy
(looking resplendant in dark turtleneck and matching beard), it means
that PDAs, overall, are just...

Sharp's Zaurus SLC-860
11/14/2003 10:19 AMFrom Sharp, the latest version of their Linux-based Zaurus PDA. The
SL-C860 is an update of their SL-C760 and SL-C750 handhelds, and has a
400MHz processor, 128MB of RAM, and a 640x480 resolution LCD screen
that swivels around to reveal a tiny keyboard. For whatever reason
Sharp hasn't bothered to really market any of the handhelds in the
Zaurus line in the States, and the SLC-860 will likely prove no
different. Read...

Sharp's Kitchen Composters
09/13/2004 02:15 PM
Sharp has announced a pair of kitchen composters,
the NP-40CX-S and the NP-20CX-S, both of which use a special microbe
blend to reduce the volume of organic waste by up to 92% in just 24
hours. There's not much difference between the two units beyond
capacity (and wheels, I guess), and Sharp claims that the "Composting
Bio Mix" will only have need to be replaced about twice a year.
I don't know if Sharp plans to release these units outside of
Japan, but I would love to play around with one if they do. It would
be especially nifty if you could use the rendered waste as mulch or
something like that. Until then, I guess we'll just have to do it the
New York way - letting our plants die and then buying some more.

Sharp's Quick Release Screws
Sharp's Quick Release Screws

LIAM "THE INTERN" MCNULTY --
You're probably looking at that image on the right and
thinking, "...uhh...." Well, I'd like everyone to know that I
translated that image. Yes, I employed my superior Paint Shop Pro
skills, took out the Japanese text, and replaced it with the English
text that would fit in its place. And I did it without using any lens
flares.
This image was in Japanese because it's coming from Sharp, who has
for some reason decided they don't really like screwdrivers. As part
of Sharp's international "screw screws" campaign, they've developed
some "Easy Release Screws," which when heated to 100 degrees Celsius
(212 degrees Fahrenheit for normal people), will have a special washer
section expand, allowing for easy removal of the screw, (if you're a
robot with super-heated hands, of course).
One of the primary applications of the screws will be appliances;
recycling them requires dissasembly, which requires manual labor. With
these new screws, machines could easily take apart a TV in a tenth (as
Sharp estimates) of the time it takes a mere human.

Just because the
Western world has poo poo'd the MiniDisc doesn't mean Japan is ready
to let the dream die quite yet. Sharp has release a new MD player, the
MD-DS55 Auvi, in four new colors -- including staff favorite, pink. It
doesn't appear that the new players use Sony's new Hi-MD standard --
the one that uses the new 1 gigabyte MiniDiscs.

Sharp has
unveiled a new street lamp in Japan called the "Lumiwall" that uses
solar power and LED arrays to remain entirely off of the electrical
grid. Although each unit costs in the neighborhood of $4,500, the idea
is that the initial cost outlay will be offset by the power savings
and lessened environmental impact.

Technical Jibber Jabber About Sharp's

alt="aquos_lc-45GD1.jpg image" width="220" height="169" border="0"
align="right" vspace="5" hspace="15"/>Although Sharp's
announcement of its 45V-inch LCD Aquos LC-45GD1 TV isn't news (we've
known about it for a couple of months, at least), this article on NE
Asia Online goes into a surprisingly amount of technical depth (if
that's your thing) about what decisions Sharp made in creating the
world's largest LCD TV. Sharp apparently uses a special signaling
technique to raise the effective viewable colors from HD's standard
8-bit per channel (around 16.77 million colors) to 10-bit (around 1.07
billion colors), making some of the odd banding effects of digital
signal less noticeable. Oddly enough, as nice as I am to Sharp, they
continue to ignore my requests for a long-term review sample of the
$9,000 unit. Come on, guys, think of how much more resonant my
blogging would be if my words were the size of cars.

03/19/2003 10:45 PMA certain make of Siemens cellular handset, popular in Europe, can be
shut down by sending an SMS-encoded message to it. Hilarity ensues.
The e-mails contain a single word, taken from the phone's language
menu, surrounded by quote marks and preceded by an asterisk, such as
"*English" or "*Deutsch," Siemens said.
Opening the short-text message on a Siemens 35 series cell completely
disables it, Rice said. Siemens 45 series phones are less affected and
can be resuscitated after about two minutes of work, Rice said. Both
phones are sold only in Europe.

How cellphones change teenagers
How cellphones change teenagers
08/03/2004 05:15 AMSociologist Mimi Ito has just published a great paper on the way that
mobile phones change teen social interaction on Vodaphone's Receiver
magazine:
After young people have converged in physical space, mobile
communication does not necessarily end. In contrast to work meetings
in which mobile communications are largely excluded, among gatherings
of young people, the mobile phone is a social accessory. They might
call a friend, inviting them to join them, or getting information
about the conversation at hand. When an email message comes into a
friend's mobile, it is quite common to ask who it was from and a
conversation about that person to ensue. Young people generally
reported that they had no reservations about making contact with
others via mobile phones when they were with a group of friends,
though they might make a brief apology if a one-on-one gathering was
interrupted with a voice call.
