Voice over IP (VoIP) is set to transform telecommunications in the next five to 10 years. And with telecom companies moving their telephone calls from circuit-switched telephone networks to packet-based data, there have been calls for U.S. telecom regulatory policy to change as well. Neal Shact, CEO of CommuniTech, a telecommunications equipment vendor specializing in headsets, video, and audio teleconferencing equipment, spoke to InfoWorld Senior Analyst Wayne Rash about the FCC's hearings and what VoIP solutions in the enterprise are going to look like.

Despite its shining promise for establishing elegant, integrated, and cost-effective distributed environments, grid computing has yet to win over skeptical enterprise IT executives and reach mainstream adoption.

Taking a serious look at grids -

01/17/2004 10:42 PM
Whatever future there is for business applications of grid computing, it won’t be shaped by technology. Business attitudes must change to embrace the technology that already exists. This is a classic example of technology that’s crucial to business having its uptake delayed by an apparent lack of demand. It isn’t a solution looking for a problem; there are plenty of existing problems to go after with grids and similar approaches to distributed computing. What sticks in the minds of many IT professionals is that grids are useful to science and academia, therefore they are likely to be too esoteric for business computing.
