new roller coaster at
Linnanmäki

« People enjoying Tulireki [fire sled], the new rollercoaster at Linnanmäki. A few photos from Jarkko's birthday at Lintsi »

Jarkko decided that he wanted to spend his birthday at Linnanmäki, so we and two friends helped him try to feel a year younger instead of older for a day. :) They all spent the day getting me onto various rides that I likely wouldn't have tried in my slightly hungover state coupled with a fear of heights. The first one we tried was something called kieputin [the spinner] which rates high on the vomitronic scale. I kept expecting to be drenched either in my own vomit or someone elses, but I was happily disappointed.

Finnish clowns are still as creepy and scary as other clowns around the world. Perhaps there is an EU commission on the scary clown standard along with everything else, since Lintsi the clown should send little kids running. There's also the clownish orange globule known as the plop-plop guy who haunts the park with sinister eyes. I sat on the opposite end of the Viking Ship, another bad hangover ride, from the plop-plop and watched him smirk at me as I was laughing my ass off while trying not to lose my lunch. "Honey, you're scaring the kids.", Jarkko informed me as a group of girls in the row across from us was apparently eyeing me rather cautiously. They weren't facing the plop-plop guy.

Aside from all the spinny, whirly, puke-o-matic rides in the park, there are several roller coasters that are small in scale, but still a lot of fun. We went through the arcade, too, and I won a little Winnie the Pooh doll for Mari. Near the end of the day they finally agreed to ride my first choice which was the carousel. :) It's an antique and rotates slowly, but the slightly naughty designs, wooden animals and classic punch card organ make it a fixture in any carnival. Jarkko agreed to sit on the camel and let me take a picture of him, but a man sitting on small bactrian camel leads to a bit of a pitiful grimace. It was a fabulously fun day of frivolity.

Hopefully, he won't ask for bungee jumping next year. :)

Heil Honey, I'm Home: Britcom about
Hitler

Heil Honey, I'm Home: Britcom about
Hitler
12/16/2003 11:12 AM
In 1990, Britons were delivered a a short-lived sitcom called Heil Honey, I'm Home, about Adolph Hitler and Eva Braun's home-life next door to a Jewish couple in the 1930s.
This most infamous of all British sitcoms attracted controversy out of all proportion to the number of people who saw it. Naturally, the hullabaloo was built on the shocking notion that anyone would mount a comedy about Hitler and the Jews - seemingly the definition of poor taste. In reality, the show was no more than a spoof - and not of 1930s Germany but of the kind of 1960s/1970s American sitcoms that would embrace any idea, no matter how stupid. The title, the corny dialogue, the applause when anyone arrived on set, the acting (McCaul's Hitler was more reminiscent of Chaplin's The Great Dictator than your actual Fuhrer) - all were clear signposts of parody. Mel Brooks had already explored the concept of pantomime Nazis in his masterpiece movie (and eventual stage musical) The Producers.

A perfect day

A perfect day 03/11/2003 01:59 PM
An extremely rare personal entry. Politics and the state of the economy were getting me down, and the kid was out of school, so we decided to take the day off. I spent most of today on a gorgeous hike in Wildcat Canyon, only 20 minutes away by car from my house. Up and down a thousand feet a couple of times on a six mile loop trail, with beautiful views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Mt. Tamalpais, Carquinez Straits, and the San Pablo reservoir, as well as not so beautiful views of the Richmond refineries. The plum and cherry trees on the approaches were blossoming, and the hillsides were Irish green and dotted with orange California poppies. Hawks were floating over the hills, trying to catch the ground squirrels scurrying from burrow to burrow. The kid got to get up close to cows starting to shed their winter coats, and had the joy of taking a short cut all by himself (hopefully not noticing dad keeping an eye on him from the rear quarter). It was beautiful, and just what my soul needed. A perfect spring day, a perfect way to spend a day. This is why I live in the Bay Area, and put up with the incredibly expensive housing, jammed traffic, and lousy public schools. Then spent the evening blogging hour(s) playing with my weblogs. Read some great stories at the preacher's place. Spiffied up my linklog and turned it into its own separate weblog, The Midnight Blog. Added Meg's cool yellow background for links. Played with the stylesheets, messed things up and backed out of my changes. Bought a new domain name (more on that later). Didn't check my email, which I am behind on. Tried not to read any political news (failed). Except for the latter, and for the hour the day is ending at, a perfect day.
