worth it?
04/04/2005 02:24 AMWith every full version upgrade to Adobe's line up there comes the
question, "Is it worth it?" This time around they have added some
interesting new features and tighter integration across the board, but
does it warrant a full number upgrade? Is it worth the extra outlay of
cash--we're talking anywhere from USD$349.00 to USD$749.00 for
upgrades or USD$899.00 to USD$1,229.00 for a new suite? Will you wait

business, rather enforcing the terms of the license agreement, which
says the product can be installed on only two machines.

Adobe Buying Macromedia -- Creative
Consolidation
04/18/2005 08:01 AMWith so much happening in the online world concerning images, graphics
and publishing, it's been sort of interesting to watch both Adobe and
Macromedia sort of stand aside and watch, without getting too
involved. Both companies seem to have flashes of brilliance, but then
also appear to be slow and a bit behind on various things happening
online. It looks like the two will try to figure out where they're
going together, as
Adobe has
announced plans to buy Macromedia for $3.4 billion. Of course,
taking two different companies that both seem to have vision problems,
and combining them, doesn't always do much for the combined entity.
In fact, the time and effort spent combining can often lead the
companies to take their eyes off the ball. However, given both
companies dominant positions in certain areas, a well-executed merger
certainly could do well. It's just a question of how well the plan
can be executed.

04/05/2005 03:56 AMOpera has just announced that its popular internet browser will be
integrated into the upcoming release of the Adobe Creative Suite.
Neowin
exclusively reported several weeks ago, that
Adobe planned to launch Photoshop CS2 this coming May. Creative Suite
2 products (including GoLive) will use the Opera browsing engine to
preview output.
"Adobe Creative Suite 2 is a complete design environment that
accelerates publishing workflows for print, the Web, and mobile
platforms," said John Brennan, senior vice president of Creative
Professional products at Adobe. "The advanced rendering
technologies and open standards provided by Opera's advanced Web
browser ensure that designers using Adobe Creative Suite 2 can create
and realize their best work, for output online or to the latest
handheld devices."
Adobe will make heavy use of Opera Small-Screen Rendering technology,
which allows for simulated output of content on different screen
sizes. (Proving very useful for web designers and graphic artists who
today, must create platform-independent content)

So many of the photography periodicals and magazines these days are
all geared towards the digital photographer which, even as a digital
photographer, I never buy since they seem to be filled with articles
on topics that don't interest me and oodles of ads. The Academic
Bookstore in Helsinki has an admirable assortment of various
magazines, including B&W, a lofty art photography magazine and
Leica World, a bi-annual journal that doesn't seem to have a lot of
content.
I finally ran across Leica
Fotografie International which focuses on Leica cameras and
photography and isn't so highbrow since it has a number of articles
for those of us who are enthusiasts if not world class artists. There
is a lovely mix of practical articles interspersed with Leica photos
you can appreciate and dream of taking yourself someday. LFI may be
one of the last non-artsy film photography magazines left so, if you
have a Leica or just like interesting photos in the street or
photojournalism genre, you might consider subscribing.
