The Inquirer: Athlon 64 and Opteron dual-core explained. Or not, considering that the article is full of errors: HyperTransport and HyperThreading are completely unrelated and thus aren't exclusive (since "hyper" doesn't mean anything), I don't see any particular barrier to AMD implementing SMT, and many multi-core processors share L2 cache.

Review: Today, you can buy two variants of the Athlon 64 processor 3500+. One is built using AMD's older 130nm process, the other manufactured on 90nm. Do these make a real-world difference? We take some thermal readings, and speculate on why you can't buy faster Athlon 64's on 90nm.

Intel to demonstrate Dual Core CPU's 09/04/2004 07:27 PM

I have made it a policy here to make a disclaimer when writing about companies I have a personal interest in. So here it is I own stock in Intel.

That being said I am quite happy to see that they are following closely on AMD's heals the demonstration of dual core technology at the upcoming Intel Developers Forum. I am personally excited to compare the benchmarks between the Intel and AMD offerings There are a lot of other issues at stake and which chip that is demonstrated will be widely talked about. Wolfram explained 07/23/2004 01:04 PM
I just came across a Forbes article by Michael S. Malone, dated 11.27.00, called "God, Stephen Wolfram and Everything Else." It's a good, non-technical introduction to Wolfram. Nicely done. Critics of Wolfram won't find much to like in it, and I still think Ray Kurzweil's piece is the best analysis/intro I've read, but Malone puts Wolfram into a useful perspective....

Domain Keys Explained

Domain Keys Explained 05/18/2004 09:08 PM

Via Jeremy Zawodny,, Yahoo's Anti-Spam Resource Center have published an explanation of their proposed Domain Keys spam fighting technique. At first glance it looks very promising. There's no centralised authority, no requirements for changes to existing protocols and the central concept is extremely easy to understand. Essentially, mail servers generate a public/private key pair and sign outgoing messages with the private key, while publishing the public key as part of their DNS record. Because only they can publish to their public key in this way the signature can be used to confirm that the sender of the email has not been spoofed. The presence or lack of a signature can be used as part of the process of identifying spam.

The FAQ covers all the bases I could think of, and explains how Domain Keys can help fight phishing attacks as well.

Collapsing US dollar explained

Collapsing US dollar explained 04/12/2005 11:50 AM
Cory Doctorow: This James Surowiecki from the New Yorker explains how the collapsing dollar has been kept buoyant by Japan and China, who are buying up mountains of American debt in order to keep the dollar from sinking so low that Americans can't afford Asian imports. It's not really working, though -- as those of us who earn US dollars but live abroad can attest, the imploding American Peso is shrinking fast.
Of course, the Chinese and the Japanese could decide that the costs of the falling dollar are too great, and suddenly stop (or, at least, cut back sharply) their lending to the United States. This would lead to a so-called "hard landing" for the U.S. economy: high inflation, punitive interest rates, collapsing stock prices and housing prices. It would also lead to bedlam for China and Japan. Their best customers would effectively be unable to afford their wares. To paraphrase John Paul Getty: If you owe the bank a hundred dollars, you've got a problem. If you owe the bank three trillion dollars, the bank's got a problem.

House of the Rising Sun explained 04/18/2005 02:46 PM
The Boston Phoenix this week runs an excerpt from Dave Van Ronk's memoir, the Mayor of MacDougal Street. The piece is about how Van Ronk lost control of his arrangement of The House of the Rising Sun, first to Dylan and then toThe Animals. Van Ronk was not on the Lessig side of the copyright battle. Anyway, I bring this up because Van Ronk ends by saying that late in life he discovered that the song isn't about a whore house. It's about the Orleans Parish women's prison. Add it to the annals of busted folksongnomies. [Technorati tags: vanronk risingsun]...
