Office-killer:
iWork.
Chatter surrounding iWork — then called iWorks, as
it was speculated to be the successor to AppleWorks — first
emerged almost two years ago. Since then, iWork has become a perennial
rumor favorite, as AppleWorks 6 continues to show its age and lack of
refinement associated with Apple's applications today. Steve Jobs
introduced AppleWorks 6 during Macworld Expo San Francisco in 2000,
making the application a dinosaur in software years by today's
standards.

Apple iWork '05
04/18/2005 04:42 PMWith built-in designs for documents and presentations, seamless
integration with iLife media and an easy to use toolbar, Apple has
brought professional design capabilities to the average Mac user with
iWork.
iWork consists of Pages, Apple’s new word processing application
designed to replace AppleWorks, and Keynote 2.0, a flexible
application for producing presentations, interactive slideshows, and
more.
Although Pages wasn’t created to be in the same league as the pro apps
like QuarkXpress or Adobe InDesign, it gives everyone the ability to
easily create great looking documents. It comes with about 40 design
templates that cover everything from invitations to newsletters,
brochures, press releases and school or business reports.
It is a simple, clean program for the non-professional designer, with
import and export capabilities with Microsoft Word, pdf, HTML, RTF and
plain text. Documents are created by simply dragging pictures and
images onto it, resizing them and placing them by using your mouse to
pull or push the corners to the proper perspective. Just one click
inserts tables and charts or changes colors and font styles. Easily
apply, edit, and create new paragraph, character, and list styles.
With Keynote 2, Apple has added the ability to export a presentation
in flash or QuickTime formats and improved the compatibility with
AppleWorks and PowerPoint. Keynote 2 comes with 10 new themes for
presentations, kiosks, portfolios, and storyboards, including the
creation of self-playing presentations.
Also with this new version, Keynote also has been given the ability to
embed a web page and have it update every time the slideshow is run.
The site remains fully accessible, and clicking on any of its links
will launch the page in Safari. Keynote will drop to the background,
and its Dock icon will adopt a green play icon. Clicking this returns
you to your presentation.
One of the biggest changes to Keynote with this upgrade, is the
addition of a Presenter mode, in which a presentation can be previewed
and managed. In addition to displaying your presenter notes, it can
now add current and next slides and a clock and a timer (showing
either how long you have left to speak or how long you have been
talking). Each element can be resized and dragged to wherever on the
screen suits you best, so if you would rather have a large view of the
current slide and a small preview of the next, you can.
Of the two iWork applications, Keynote is easier to use, thanks to
automatic guides and layouts. The common elements shared by both Pages
and Keynote mean the two applications complement each other very well
and after using one, the other seems immediately familiar. Also, if
you require more templates than those provided by Apple, more can be
found at http://www.iworkcommunity.com/.
iWork is not the Microsoft Office killer that some pre-release rumors
suggested, but priced at $79, it is well worth the cost if you want to
create professional newsletters, brochures and office presentations.
System requirements:
• Macintosh computer with 500MHz or faster PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 (G4
for PowerBook); G4 or G5 recommended
• 128MB of RAM (512MB recommended)
• 8MB of video memory (32MB recommended)
• Mac OS X v10.3.6 or later
• QuickTime 6.5 or later
• iLife '04 or later recommended
• 1GB of available disk space
• DVD drive required to install applications
(CD version available at www.apple.com/store)
Pros:
Easy user interface
Compatibility with PowerPoint and Word
Large catalogue of free, professionally-designed templates
Cons:
No word counter
No grammar checker

Update
06/06/2005 12:13 AMThanks eXtermia for the heads up on this news, found at DriverHeaven
They are reporting that Microsoft have publically released Windows
Update v6, now dubbed
Microsoft Update. Users on Windows 2000,
2003 Server and XP have access to the web site after downloading an
ActiveX update. The new update site supports both Windows and Office
2003 updates in one central location making it easier for customers to
get a hold of the latest patches and updates available to Microsoft
software.
Once at the website, you'll have to agree to download some new
software which may take a couple of minutes, but once done you'll see
the new version of the Windows Update website - although there don't
seem to be any new updates on there at the moment. Windows XP users
will have to have
at least Service Pack 1 to use the site.

JobCapture 5 adds project-level
tracking, more
08/05/2004 02:24 PMCaptureWorks has announced the release of
JobCapture 5,
the latest update to the company's software that tracks work activity,
including time spent with specific applications, on each user's
computer and generates reports. The upgrade to version 5 adds the
ability to track work at the project level, the option to add new
applications to the tracking list without the need for a plug-in,
seamless integration with legacy systems through CaptureConnect SDK,
which allows third party developers to create external connections
with CaptureWorks' software, and more. Pricing is US$199 per tracked
computer, which includes the Manager application that consolidates all
the information gathered over the network. The client and server
software requires Mac OS X v10.2.4 or higher, with negligible hard
disk space and RAM demands on the client side and 128MB RAM and 3MB
per user per month required on the server side.

LIAM "THE INTERN" MCNULTY -- If you
have been keeping up with the PDA/mobile market, you've probably seen
this before. I first remember hearing about this technology a couple
years ago - a virtual keyboard is projected onto a flat surface and an
infrared sensor will detect the interruption in the laser beam. This
would be interpreted as a keystroke. Sounds interesting, right?
Well, unfortunately, it only ever sounded interesting. A
company called "iBiz" claimed to be releasing a product like this
earlier this year, but that was the last I'd ever heard of it. I've
never seen this product actually on a shelf (which isn't a good sign),
and information about its availability is lacking.
Adding to the mystery is the Japanese firm "Tanomi," who last week
began accepting orders for the same product. I'm more convinced that
this time it's true, likely because of the demonstration video posted
at Impress Watch and the ~$270 price tag.

worry about people sharing music files that they can probably get on

A cracked version of the popular "Mosquito v2.0" game
for Symbian phones has turned out to include a special trojan payload:
a dialer that sends a text message to the UK number 87140 with a
charge of £1.50 (about $2.75) a pop. So yeah, that sucks, but
you shouldn't be downloading phone warez, either.
Fortunately, if you're one of the unlucky ones who has been stung
by the malware, removing it appears to be as simple as deleting the
offending file. And while this is notable, and a little bit scary,
maybe it should be a sign to mobile OS developers to start locking
down the dialing functions of their phones a little more securely?

Attorney General John Ashcroft announced today the most far-reaching

organizations involved in illegal intellectual property piracy over

"Intellectual property theft is a global problem that hurts

NYT: IRC is like the cantina scene from
Star Wars, but with porn and warez (oh
my)
05/06/2004 03:07 AMThe NYT has run a goofy Red-scare piece on Internet Relay Chat, with
hysterical, alarmist bushwah like "It is still possible - though
sometimes a bit difficult - to find mature technical discussions among
the tens of thousands of I.R.C. chat rooms" -- I mean, how "difficult"
is it to type "/join #unix"?
When I.R.C. started in the 1980's, it was best known as a way for
serious computer professionals worldwide to communicate in real
time. It is still possible - though sometimes a bit difficult -
to find mature technical discussions among the tens of thousands
of I.R.C. chat rooms, known as channels, operating at any one
time. There are also respectable I.R.C. systems and channels -
some operated by universities or Internet service providers - for
gamers seeking opponents or those who want to talk about sports
or hobbies.
Still, I.R.C. perhaps most closely resembles the cantina scene in
"Star Wars'': a louche hangout of digital smugglers, pirates,
curiosity seekers and the people who love them (or hunt them).
There seem to be I.R.C. channels dedicated to every sexual
fetish, and I.R.C. users speculate that terrorists also use the
networks to communicate in relative obscurity. Yet I.R.C. has its
advocates, who point to its legitimate uses.
