Record sales up, P2P sales up -- RIAA's
story doesn't add up

Record sales up, P2P sales up -- RIAA's
story doesn't add up
03/24/2005 04:52 PM
Cory Doctorow: According to the RIAA, CD sales are increasing. Now, the RIAA also says that P2P destroys music sales, so it follows that if they're selling more CDs there must be less P2P, right? Uh, no -- file-sharing is up, too (so CD sales should be falling right?).

So is it possible that CD sales and P2P are decoupled (as all the quantitative, independent research indicates), and that the downturn in CD sales is better laid at the feed of bad business, a bad economy, fewer albums and more things competing for entertainment dollars (cough games cough Internet cough).

The number of CDs and other music products shipped from record labels to retail merchants rose 2 percent last year, to 814 million units, the first annual increase in five years, according to the Recording Industry Association of America.

The Pixies Say No To Record Company,
Focus On Touring

The Pixies Say No To Record Company,
Focus On Touring
08/13/2004 05:45 AM
Ever since Napster came out, it was easy to see that it was going to be increasingly difficult to just make money selling CDs. This seems fairly obvious, of course, but when people asked where the money would come from, it seemed equally obvious that the money would come from using the music to promote other items for sale, such as concert tickets, fan clubs, access to the artists and plenty of other ideas. Some people responded that (a) no artist would make as much and (b) what about artists who don't like to tour? There are simple answers, of course. Most musicians don't make any money. Under this plan, those few super star artists may not get as rich, but it would be much easier for other artists to make a reasonable amount of money -- since they wouldn't have to go through the same record label/radio promotion process. As for the question of musicians who don't want to tour... too bad. I'd love to be able to sit here and have people pay me entirely based on what I wrote yesterday, but it doesn't happen. I needed to come up with a business model that continued to make me money, and so do musicians. One group that seems to have at least figured out the basics of this is the Pixies. Rather than sign a record deal, they admit: " That's not where the money is. The business is with the real customers, the fans. They're the ones who say, 'OK, we'll come and see you perform." So, they haven't signed a record deal, but are out making money touring... and selling exclusive recordings of the shows right after they happen (which might violate a patent< /a>, but that's another story). It's funny that the music "industry" which is supposed to house the business whizzes is struggling to figure out what they can do other than sue people, while the musicians are out there reinventing the actual industry.

Eric Clapton Sets Digital Sales Record

Posted Apr 8, 2004, 9:01 AM ET by Alberto Escarlate

Eric Clapton album cover - Me & Mr.
JohnsonEric Clapton’s new album — called ”Me And Mr. Johnson” — is a tribute to the blues pioneer Robert Johnson. Its digital pre-release has broken Warner Music records for this category of sales. The album was released to various digital music stores March 23rd, including iTunes, Napster, MusicMatch, Rhapsody, and Liquid Audio. The CD release on March 31st, debuted as #6 on Billboard 200 chart.

The fourteen-song collection, produced by the artist and Simon Climie, and featuring such Robert Johnson classics as “Kind Hearted Woman Blues,” “Come On In My Kitchen” and “Hell Hound On My Trail,” was made available on March 23, a week before its official release at retail on such digital outlets as applemusic.com, napster.com, musicmatch.com, listen.com, buymusic.com. and liquidaudio.com, as well as the Warner Bros. Records Digital Music Store.
As a result, Me And Mr. Johnson racked up more pre-sale digital orders than any other artist release in Warner Music Group history. It’s a trend that continues with high demand for the album at retail outlets following its March 30th release, resulting in a debut at #6 on Billboard’s Top 200 album sales chart this week.[The Digital Music Weblog]

"Fourth consecutive annual drop blamed squarely on illegal file sharing" says vnunet. "The 2003 decline reflects consumers' continuing practice to download songs illegally from the Internet" says the Miami Herald. "Global music sales had another difficult year in 2003 under the combined effects of digital and physical piracy and competition from other entertainment products," the Hollywood Reporter parrots. "Global sales of recorded music slid again in 2003 as piracy and illegal downloading continued to inflict damage," Newsday harps. "Industry executives blame European consumers for burning music onto blank compact discs or downloading the music for free off the Internet rather than buy from the local record shop" says Forbes. The The Moscow Times claims "Pirates Taking a Toll on $32Bln Music Industry". Not a single one of them mentioned the four year boycott of the major labels, which started right before the slump in sales started.
