When a content owner creates an audio or video stream, they can add script commands (such as URL script commands and custom script commands) to be encoded in the stream. When the stream is played back, the script commands can trigger events in an embedded player program, or they can open your browser and then navigate to a Web page. This behavior is by design

After applying the Update for Windows Media Player Script Commands (KB828026), some URL script commands do not fire even though they would be expected to do so. In addition to the URL script command issues, this package addresses an issue with the installer that would cause 100% CPU utilization in certain scenarios.

NTSC-J, PAL, and SECAM TV Tuner Hotfix
for DirectX 9.0b on Windows 2000,
Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003
(KB825116)
11/04/2003 11:37 PM
DirectX 9.0b was released on 7/23/03 to address the MIDI security issue identified in bulletin MS03-030. A small number of non-security fixes were also included in the release. One of these fixes caused several TV Tuner capture card/driver combinations using video formats other than NTSC (NTSC-J, PAL, SECAM) to no longer initialize correctly on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003. Symptoms include loss of capture functionality and potential inability to set/retain device capture settings. This hotfix, documented further in Knowledge Base article 825116, has been issued to correct the flaw. 11-04-03 update: The English hotfix package has been modified to allow patching of all language installations supported by the affected Operating Systems.

The web has a ways to go

The web has a ways to go 11/11/2003 11:27 PM
I live in San Francisco. I wanted to get some Thai food delivered to my apartment. I didn't have any menus handy, so I tried to use the web. I failed. In fact, not only did I fail, but I tried for half an hour and had a miserable time while doing it. I don't know where the breakdown is: Thai restaurants in San Francisco don't deliver (to my neighborhood*), the information isn't on the web, the mechanisms for finding the information aren't good, or I'm inept at using them. But it seems like a simple, possible thing that was not possible for simple enough for me to complete before giving up and settling for a veggie burger bought from the health food store across the street.

Unless it's the first option, which I doubt, the web has a ways to go.

Yay.

* I actually placed an order online here, which I was delighted about until, after realizing I gave the wrong phone number, I called, and they then told me I'm too far away.

Break up stories. NYC blogger smitten shares her friend's break-up-by-text-message story and invites readers to post their own. Resulting tales of woe (and some that aren't) include: (1) a "Dear John" e-mail; (2) he dedicates Robert Palmer's classic "I didn't mean to turn you on" to you; (3) his mother calls to say happy birthday and btw her son is having an affair; (4) you find out he has a fiance when she calls to ask who you are; (5) you break up right after sex while everyone's still naked. Maybe there should be a Strunk and White "Elements of Style" resource for break up protocol.

Borked. Busted. DOA. Done in. Hosed. Frapped out. Gronked. Fubar. Kaput. Roached. Shot. Snafu. Tits up. Toast. Note once again the vitality of English, with contributions from engineering and military jargon interbreeding organically, and in one case cheerful borrowing from our German cousins. Contributions for the list welcome. Lauren, who contributed to the list, notes that pining for the fjords means “dead” not “broken”. Paul Hoffman, who contributed gronked, asserts that tits up and in fact much of the list does too. I disagree, and it’s my list. Let’s just stay away from the corollary, that engineers apparently regard any complex system that’s functioning properly to be be a temporary anomaly.

10,000 ways to Ni Hao with Unicode and
PHP

10,000 ways to Ni Hao with Unicode and
PHP
10/29/2003 12:11 AM
Joel Spolsky has been cursing the lack of support for Unicode in PHP. So last week, he wrote this great article on The Absolute Minimum Every Software Developer Absolutely, Positively Must Know About Unicode and Character Sets (No Excuses!).

Of course, that still doesn't answer his initial question of how to get Unicode working with PHP. Well Scott Reynen had the solution and wrote Ho w to develop multilingual, Unicode applications with PHP in response to Joel's frustration.

Scott's technique works on all versions of PHP. Or you can just use the UTF8 character set and mbstring functions, which should run faster as they are coded in C. To use mbstring, you need PHP 4.3 or later (it was buggy pre-4.3). On Unix, you will need to compile the extension in. On Windows, you just need to modify your php.ini.

Update: l0t3k is working on a Unicode I18N extension based on IBM's open source International Components for Unicode. The extension includes a UnicodeString class with the requisite searching, replacing, casing, trimming, and classification methods. Get the CVS version (16 Oct 2003).

PS: Ni Hao means hello in Chinese.
