"That's what broadband technology is. It means we'll open the highways of knowledge -- new highways of knowledge."
-- President George W. Bush, March 26, 2004

You'd think he would at least give Al Gore credit for the metaphor.

Bush's call in the speech for universal broadband by 2007 has gotten press attention, but not the second half of his sentence:

"We ought to have a universal, affordable access for broadband technology by the year 2007, and then we ought to make sure as soon as possible thereafter, consumers have got plenty of choices when it comes to purchasing the broadband carrier."

The good news is that Bush acknowledges that only with competition will broadband be affordable and a platform for innovation.  The bad news is that he's for monopoly broadband by a date-certain three years from now, and competitive broadband "as soon as possible."  Why do I suspect his administration will do more to achieve the first goal than the second one?

Interactive SMS Billboards

Interactive SMS Billboards 07/23/2004 04:34 AM

Advertising Agency Ogilvy, in a European first, has launched a new ad campaign for the Ford Fiesta, combining interactive billboards with SMS.

SPG_20_33_0_11.jpg In several major cities of Belgium, young people are staring up at a huge Ford Fiesta billboard - visually similar to the TV pinball machine commercial - while texting on their mobile phones.

Each passer-by can try their hand at winning a Ford Fiesta by sending an SMS with his/her first name to a short code and indicating the code on the billboard. The billboard then responds to this SMS; displaying an "encouragment to continue" message adressed to the person, and sends him/her another SMS with a question. If he or she answers correctly, the billboard reacts like a winning pinball machine and he/she is entitled to an "extra ball" meaning he/she will be included in the draw for a winner. For every incorrect answer sent by text message, the pinball machine displays a "tilt".

The fiestafun website allows anyone to check on the progress of the game or find out where exactly these billboards are located.

Cuba places torture billboards in front
of US diplomatic HQ
12/19/2004 03:35 PM
Xeni Jardin: Rough translation from the Spanish language original:
HAVANA (Reuters) - Cuba unfolded two gigantic billboards on Friday in front of the United States diplomatic headquarters in the island, with photographs of the tortures in the Abu Ghraib prison of Iraq and the word "Fascistas" together with a Nazi swastika.

The images were put up after Cuba demanded that the United States Interests Section in Cuba take down a Christmas billboard with a shining ornament that says "75," in allusion to the dissidents imprisoned by the Cuban government in 2003. The billboards unfolded by Cuba show Iraqi prisoners bleeding and hooded during torture by soldiers in Abu Ghraib with a caption that says "Made in Usa" in the middle of the high-traffic Malecón of Havana.

Three days ago, James Cason, chief of the US Interests Section in Havana, declared that president Fidel Castro was threatening the diplomatic office with reprisals by saying that "there would be consequences" if they did not take down the billboard referring to the imprisoned dissidents. Reuters observed on Friday morning the work of unfolding the billboards in front of the North American Special Interests section

My son and I spent a little time this afternoon on the Monty Hall paradox, a topic we'd discussed a couple of years ago. Unfortunately, it takes me 20 minutes to understand the explanation, and I only understand it for 4 continuous seconds. Here's the situation. You are asked to pick one of three doors. Donkeys are behind two of them, and a new car is behind another. After you choose your door, but before it's revealed to you, Monty Hall (the emcee) opens one of the doors you didn't choose and reveals a donkey. He then asks if you'd...

Eclipse TD Lulét Mini Speaker System

Eclipse TD Lulét Mini Speaker System 06/03/2004 08:41 AM

307_sub_img.jpg imageAlthough suggested to me as an iPod solution, there's absolutely nothing keeping you from using the Eclipse TD Lulét speaker systems for anything from home theater to gaming -- in fact, they're designed to be easily mountable anywhere, like most other small speakers. If you do want to use the Lulét system with an iPod or other portable player, though, the accompanying amplifier will make sure you've got enough wattage to push either the 2.1 (or the 5.1 system, although using that with a portable player might be a waste of 3 perfectly good channels). The 307 Lulét line isn't their only setup, either, if you're looking for something with a little more punch than mini-system gear. (Thanks, Tim!)

Sex.com Case Denied Appeal Again

Sex.com Case Denied Appeal Again 03/31/2005 11:13 PM
Could it really be that the infamous Sex.com court case is finally over? We've been following the case since 1999, but it really started a decade ago when Stephen Cohen forged documents to have the domain transferred to him. That set off quite the legal saga, eventually leading to the domain being transferred back to its original owner, Gary Kremen, along with a ruling that Cohen owed Kremen $65 million. That's when things started to get more bizarre. Cohen high-tailed it to Mexico, and started a series of odd appeals, including one where he claimed that the ruling was unconstitutional, since it would effectively make him a slave to Kremen. He also claimed that he trademarked Sex.com in 1979, which no one seems to buy. The Court of Appeals has now turned down his latest appeal, and it's likely his decision to leave the country didn't help matters. In the meantime, Kremen went on to successfully sue Network Solutions for handing over the domain name in the first place, so he's made some cash out of the ordeal. Still, the case might not really be over yet, as Cohen plans to appeal again to the Supreme Court -- though, it seems exceedingly unlikely that they'll agree to hear this case.
