Sparrow MAV 01/25/2004 08:43 PM

Sunil Kumar Agrawal and other University of Deleware engineers have been working on a Micro Air Vehicle (MAV) dubbed "Sparrow". The tiny flying robot is 15cm long and weighs only 18 grams. It flys by flapping its wings but still lacks the ability to steer and requires a tethered power supply. More details can be found in the DelwareOnline.com News Journal.

A recent press release from Epson about the FR-II micro robot has generated a lot of story submissions lately. The FR-II is powered by two ultrasonic motors which drive opposing rotors. The tiny robot is just 136mm x 85mm, weigh 12.3 grams including two gyros, batteries, bluetooth link, and a digital camera. It has a flight time of about 3 minutes. You can see photos and read more about the robot at the BBC, space.com, and Slashdot. Meanwhile, Gizmodo reminds us of the Pixelito which, while it is an R/C helicopter and not a true robot, weighs in at only 6.9 grams.

Glenn Fleishman (~840 words)

Apple's huge success with the Mac mini's small form factor and low price has caused the company to look more closely at making computers in a variety of small sizes. That push was reflected in a long segment of today's press conference, with Steve Jobs laying out the reception the Mac mini has received with users and the press. He then jumped into the product announcements, and oh, what announcements! Just as the iPod broke from the pack of MP3 players and took over that market, these diminutive new Macs - the micro, nano, and pico - promise to change expectations of what computers are and how we use them. Steve Jobs said that Apple anticipates shipping all three models in the second half of 2005, in time for the holiday shopping season.

Pixelito: Even Lighter Helicopter

Pixelito: Even Lighter Helicopter 08/19/2004 09:44 AM

pixelito_8.jpg imageSo just a little while ago I mentioned that Epson had created the world's smallest flying robot. And while that may technically be the case, depending on how you define robot and if you define smallest by weight or by length or whatnot, this Pixelito helicopter hand-crafted by Alexander Van de Rostyne is pretty amazing. The frame is a single, twisted tube of 1mm carbon (fiber?), minus the tail boom which is 1.33mm in diameter, powered my a 6mm motor from the inside of a pager. It's remote controlled by infrared, and weighs in at a total 6.9 grams (stupid Most Bestest Whatevers titles beside, the Epson robot is 12.3 grams, although it has more features, too).

The Pixelito is the pinacle in a long line of tiny helicopters Alex has designed, but he is starting to question how much smaller they can go, due to the difficulty modellers will have constructing small machines. I'm confident that love will find a way, however.

And how can you hate on anyone who films their tiny, R/C helicopters with a hamster? I'm fairly sure that's scientifically impossible. (Thanks, Sebastian!)

VNC By Phone, Hitachi's micro-VNC

VNC By Phone, Hitachi's micro-VNC 03/29/2005 04:22 AM

micro_vnc.gif imageKDDI and Hitachi Systems and Services have teamed up to offer a new software/service called "micro-VNC" for KDDI's au phones. VNC is synonymous with remote desktop control for many, and micro-VNC brings the concept to mobile phones in a way I haven't seen before. Compatible with Windows, Mac and Linux, micro-VNC is currently compatible with more modern au mobile phones. I can't really say what sort of framerates you'll be getting from Half-Life 2 trying to play it on your phone, but one thing is certain — Hitachi "apologize[s] for your inconvenience from the bottom of [their] heart" that "an English page is unavailable." I'm touched, Hitachi.

Micro-Content Business

Micro-Content Business 02/05/2005 09:16 PM

What interests me about micro-content business is that the dynamics of micro-content business differs drastically between free contents versus paid contents.  Free contents are consumables.  Paid contents are properties.

Thinking of paid content as property is an emotional perspective.  I paid for it so I must own it even though it cost me only a quarter and its existance is tenuous.  Thus I think the best business models for paid content business must leverage this human weakness.
