Gates Wants to Can Spam -- Fast 04/09/2005 03:54 AM
In 2004, Bill Gates stood before a room full politicians, economists and business leaders and declared a war on spam. "It will soon be a thing of the past," Microsoft's chief software architect told those gathered at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, before laying out a three-pronged approach to eradicating the scourge of unsolicited e-mail.

A Visual History Of Spam And Viruses 09/17/2004 08:13 PM
A Microsoft employee with some extra time and plenty of spam on his hands has decided to graph out all the spam and viruses he's received since 1997. He's only graphing out the spam that makes it through the corporate spam filter, but it still shows just how much spam has grown over the years. The graph shows spam against the size of the messages, but actually suggests that the Microsoft spam filter has gotten better recently.

Bill Gates Hasn't Stopped Spam Yet

Bill Gates Hasn't Stopped Spam Yet 04/08/2005 08:15 PM
Early last year, Bill Gates announced that he was concentrating on the spam problem and had a few ideas on how to stop the problem. Of course, all of those ideas sounded like ideas that others were already trying -- and there was still plenty of spam. It's now been a year since Bill Gates said that his methods could get rid of spam in two years and it's not clear if his efforts have done very much. Certainly, Microsoft has been suing spammers, and some claim that the overall amount of spam has been decreasing a bit. However, we're still quite a long way from getting rid of spam -- which means the special department at Microsoft who's only job is to manage Bill Gates' spam (even if it's not as much as we were originally told) will probably still have plenty of work to do a year from now.

Stop Spam

Earlier this year, Bill Gates made a splash by announcing that he was spending much of his time trying to come up with ways to fight spam. Unfortunately, most of the methods he listed have been tried before without much luck. Also, many people pointed out that some of the reason spam is such a problem is because of Microsoft security problems (which were not among the things Gates was looking to fix). Well, now the experts have weighed in and they pretty much agree with everyone else: Bill Gates won't be able to stop spam. In fact, many seem to think it's fairly amusing that he thinks he can.

Survey: Spam will beat Bill Gates 04/30/2004 09:10 AM
A survey of IT security professionals conducted at the Infosecurity show in London this week revealed that more than 80 percent of people do not think that Bill Gates' pledge to eliminate spam within two years is realistic. In June 2003, the Microsoft chairman called for cooperation between government and corporations to fight the spammers. But Gates was branded hypocritical by anti-spam organizations because they said that Microsoft was only focusing on reducing the amount of spam received, rather than the spam sent by its users and servers.

Bill Gates Trying To Reinvent The Wheel
To Stop Spam
01/23/2004 11:00 PM
Now that he's no longer running the business side of Microsoft, Bill Gates has apparently turned his attention to spam. That's right, in his spare time, he's been messing around with a variety of ways to solve the spam problem, though, it sounds like all of his ideas are already being tried elsewhere. I guess that's not all that surprising considering Microsoft's history. What will be more interesting is whether or not he can get any of these methods to really work. The first is using basic sender authentication via a challenge-response solution. His second idea is basically greylisting (making servers slow down emails from unknown senders to make it more difficult/expensive for spammers to send out so many messages), which seems to be getting some more attention these days. His final idea, though, which he seems to have the most faith in, is a money-based plan to charge unknown senders to email you. The idea is that you would set a price for unknown people to email you - but you have the option of waiving that fee if it turns out you really wanted to hear from someone. I've heard of people talking about similar plans, but have never heard of it being implemented.
