AP - Dennis Miller has usually been happy to spray his acerbic wit across the political spectrum, but things will be different on his new CNBC talk program. President Bush is in a mock-free zone.

I'm trying out blogtorrent on my server here, and my first test file is a 12 minute clip from tonight's Dennis Miller show with Harry Shearer, Xeni Jardin, and Mickey Kaus, as they talked about blogging. I think all three were great though I can barely stomach Dennis Miller these days.

Throughout the late 90's, I used to get HBO solely so I could see the new Dennis Miller shows on every Friday night and I used to look forward to watching them live. But then everything changed and his sense of humor was replaced by anger, and his showed died soon after. Oh well.

Xeni Jardin: I'll be one of the guests on tonight's episode of CNBC's The Dennis Miller Show. I was seriously outclassed and out- l33ted by my fellow guests Mickey Kaus (of Slate/Kausfiles) and comic genius Harry Shearer (of The Simpsons and KCRW's "Le Show"). We taped the program earlier today, and talked about blogger's rights and the Apple v. Does case; Al Gore's new TV network; and presidential iPods, among other things.

Image: mysterious graffiti inside the closet in my dressing room today. I think I'm lucky to have escaped alive -- the cryptic scrawl looks like a sekrit cry for help for guests who may have been held there against their will. Where are these former talk show hostages now? Did the Nutter Butters and Fig Newtons in this basket do them in? Maybe things just got too hot. On the opposite wall of this Closet of Doom, the words FRENCH TWINS 04. A gang of disenfranchised AFTRA members? A pair of Parisian porn princesses? A command from the other side? Don't know, but it terrifies me.

AP - As a Democratic keynoter at a Republican National Convention, Sen. John Kerry "wants to re-fight yesterday's war" at a moment of peril for the country.

Kasia is looking to attend JavaOne later this month in San Francisco, but the company won't foot the bill for admission. I guess working in Java all day long (and sometimes all night too) for several years isn't sufficient to justify a bit of off-site training. Does anyone have a contact that might be able to score a ticket? I bet she'd even promise to blog about the conference. Hmm. Tim works at Sun now. Maybe he knows... Oh, and...

Companies Want Free Pass On Securing

Companies Want Free Pass On Securing
Your Info
03/06/2004 02:05 AM
With all the stories coming out of various corporate databases being hacked and your supposedly "private" info being taken, many companies are taking an interesting approach. Instead of focusing on better ways to secure the info and protect your privacy, they're snea king in waivers to agreements, where you have to say that you give up your right to sue them, should they leak your info. It turns out that among all the legal language you go through when using Verizon Wireless' or American Airlines' online websites, they make you agree that you won't sue them if they can't keep your data secure. This doesn't give them much incentive to keep the system as secure as possible, does it? On the flip side, though, many are saying the reason they're doing this is because of recent actions by the FTC - where they sued certain companies for promising security levels they didn't meet. Since it's difficult to guarantee that the data won't be stolen, companies are resorting to these legal clauses to get around the liability issue. Of course, I wonder how enforceable such a waiver really is? If the company is shown to be grossly negligent in how they set up their security, it probably won't matter that people clicked through a waiver that they didn't read.

Bush: Give Me Plans for GPS Shutdown

Bush: Give Me Plans for GPS Shutdown 12/17/2004 06:30 PM
U.S. President Bush has asked the Department of Defense to draft plans for shutting down the nation's GPS network in the event of a national emergency. This action would prevent terrorists from using the technology to carry out a widespread attack, the White House told reporters Wednesday. The move would revive an abandoned plan to jam certain navigational satellites on an as-needed basis.

Force Companies To Give Free Tech

Force Companies To Give Free Tech
Support For Life
12/22/2003 12:42 PM
Last week we talked about one idea to improve computer security issues: threa ten to put executives of software companies in jail if their products are not secure. That seemed a bit extreme. This week, however, the Washington Post's Rob Pegoraro has another interesting idea to improve technology product quality: require companies to provide free tech support for life. This way, he argues, the companies will quickly learn about problems, and it will be in their own best interest to get working fixes out there as quickly as possible. It will also give them incentive to do things better the first time around. He argues this is beneficial to the companies as well, as with better products, people will be more willing to spend money on them. I would add one adjustment to this suggestion: make an exception for companies or individuals who give away software for free. This would make it so anyone shopping for software can get a real benefit for paying for a product, and also doesn't unfairly burden those who prefer to just give away software.

Dennis for Pope His name is "sinned" spelled backwards. He has a kick-ass platform . He's been hard at work on the campaign trail for the job since 2004. Heck, he even meets the criteria for being eligible for the gig (see Qui uxorem, 19, caus. 33, Q. 5). He's on a *cough* papabi li list that puts him right up there with Bono and U.S. Senator Sam Brownback as potential candidates. On April 18, vote Denni s for Pope "and good things will happen!"
