Bollywood Signs Up For Kazaa Movie
Downloads... But Not Really
12/23/2003 05:39 PMThere have been a few stories about "legitimate" companies doing deals
with Kazaa, but once you get past the headline, you realize that it's
not true at all. Just like all those other deals the headlines
trumpeting a deal between some
some Bollywood film makers and
Kazaa isn't really about Kazaa at all. Instead, it's a deal with
Kazaa's sister company Altnet, which runs a service within Kazaa to
distribute approved copy protected content. So, this isn't at all
about film makers understanding the promotional value of free
downloads, but rather them trying to piggyback copy protection (in
this case files that supposedly "self-destruct" after a single $3
viewing) on the popularity of Kazaa. The deal isn't even that good.
$3 for a product that self-destructs after a single viewing? You get
a better deal going to the local video store. Meanwhile, though, they
get all the publicity of having the film "offered on Kazaa". All
Altnet is really doing is bolting a pay-for service (like iTunes) into
Kazaa. It doesn't leverage the real benefits of a distributed file
sharing network at all.

Record companies forced by court to pay
royalties
05/05/2004 12:52 PMRecord companies love to make a big deal about how file sharing
deprives artists of their royalties. Too bad the record companies
themselves must be forced, by court order, to pay the royalties they
owe to artists instead of keeping it for themselves.
A two-year investigation by New York state Attorney
General Eliot Spitzer's office found that many artists were not being
paid royalties because record companies lost contact with the
performers and had stopped making required payments.
The artists that were too hard for the record companies to find
include unknowns such as Sean Combs, Gloria Estefan, and Dolly Parton.

06/18/2004 11:28 AMExcellent! When I heard about this feature several weeks ago, I knew
right away that it'd be really useful. If you want to find movie
showtimes in San Jose, just head over to yahoo.com or search.yahoo.com
and plug in showtimes san jose. The first results you should see are
links for movie theaters as well as times for popular movies. If I
still lived in Ohio, I'd have used showtimes toledo. Sadly, showtimes
findlay and showtimes bowling green don't work....

Any Upcoming Robot Movie News?
Any Upcoming Robot Movie News?
12/29/2003 11:53 PMTonight we went and saw Elf. The kids loved it, but there wasn't any
Jesus came as a baby to bring Salvation message in it *cough*the real
meaning of
Christmas*cough* so I didn't care
for the movie as much as they did. Well anyway, while on the way out
of the theatre I saw a poster for the
new IRobot movie. I know that this isn't earthshattering news, but
hey, the IRobot movie
now has its own website according to the poster. Actually, the
website has
probably been around a while but, well, I finally just noticed it, so
I thought I'd
share. Looking at the website, I wonder if they're trying to do some
sor of weird before the movie stuff like the AI movie did? Like what
does it really mean when they say, "What are you going to do with
yours?" Also, In other movie news, now that Arnold Swartzenegger is
now gov of CA anyone want to take a guess as to whether the remake of
WestWorld is still a go? I'm guessing
probably not but one can still have some elf holiday spirit hope,
can't they?

Yahoo News was most cited news source by
bl0gs in 2004. RSS a factor?
12/19/2004 03:44 PMAccording to Intelliseek, Yahoo News was the most cited news source on
blogs in 2004. Congrats to the Yahoo News team! I wonder if that has
anything to do with the fact that Yahoo News is very blog and
aggregator friendly? They've been pumping out RSS feeds and allowing
you to subscribe to a news search as RSS for a while now. I think
there's a connection. I can't wait to see even more of Yahoo becoming
blog and RSS...
