Gnowsis - Semantic Desktop Environment 04/14/2005 07:05 AM

Gnowsis - Semantic Desktop Environment
http://www.gnowsis.org/

Gnowsis realizes a Semantic Desktop environment and is published by the Knowledge Management Lab of the DFKI. It can be used in research projects or by interested individuals. The Gnowsis system adds Semantic Web interfaces to common desktop applications. It enables users to use desktop computers like a small personal semantic web. Linking documents across applications and browsing through the personal information space is now possible. Emails, documents, addresses, photos, appointments that have been spread in the local data jungle can be linked conveniently, weaving a personal semantic web. Data structures are not changed and existing applications are extended and not replaced. Programmers can build Semantic Web and knowledge management applications on top of Gnowsis. Structured data from common desktop applications (like MS-Outlook) can be accessed in a simple web protocol, allowing developers and researchers to leverage this information. At the moment, Gnowsis is realised as a Java application. It is published as open source tool. The system is in a beta stadium and will be developed further, to be a basis for future research and commercial applications. This has been added to the tools section of Research Resources Subject Tracerâ„¢ Information Blog.

Speaking of the environment...

Speaking of the environment... 06/10/2004 11:08 AM

I was on a road trip last weekend thru the rolling hills between Somerset, PA and Cumberland, MD, where I noticed scattered windmill technology producing clean energy. I posted my appreciation and a picture on my personal YardBoy Blog that provoked a valuable reader comment. I learned that my Rochester, NY electric utility offers a billing option that guarantees production of wind power at anyone's request. It's called [Catch the Wind] and I signed up to have my average useage "blown" into the power grid for an extra $5 per month. For $60 a year, I will reduce carbon dioxide emissions equivalent to planting 146 trees or not driving 2,338 miles. If I was a zealot, I could have purchased extra. In fact, one can support wind energy regardless of who supplies your electricity. You will receive a certificate that verifies your purchase.

A Desktop That Will End The Desktop Wars

A Desktop That Will End The Desktop Wars 01/19/2004 01:46 AM
The problem why there are so many battles and wars on the desktop is primarily due to lack of standards. Most of the desktop models rolled-out nowadays contain vendor specific implementation that is usable within the vendor definition. As a result, no interconnection between dissimilar environments (brandwise) exists. One can see some interfaces that work while others are only available on one, missing on another.

New Report on Climate Change:
A new combined study by the Institute for Public Policy Research in the UK, the Center for American Progress in the US, and The Australia Institute, entitled Meeting the Climate Challenge, supports the "2 degrees" hypothesis, that if we allow pollutants from human activities to push the global average temperature two degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial revolution average, the increase will become self-perpetuating and inevitably wreak massive climate change around the globe. Of course, since the danger cannot be proved beyond a shadow of a doubt, and would be astronomically expensive to address (even the US-repudiated Kyoto first steps would be woefully inadequate) the deniers are again out in full force saying it's all biased alarmism. They haven't come up with a credible explanation what motivation hundreds of scientific experts, many with Nobel prizes, would have to put their reputations on the line for a "hysterical" theory. Maybe they think the laboratories and scientific academies of the world are hotbeds of liberalism. This report is consistent with last year's Pentagon report on the subject, which the science-hating Bush shrugged off saying he wan't interested in hearing about "worst-case scenarios". I guess Bush figures the Rapture is the answer to that.

Countries Rated for Environmental Sustainability: A new research report by Yale and Columbia Universities rates some Scandinavian and South American counties best at environmental protection. The report, prepared for the annual corporatist Davos conference, uses 75 factors in its evaluation, but also factors in country size, letting the horrifically polluted Russia off the hook, ranking 33rd. Canada ranked sixth, also an outrageous greenwash, while the US, despite its size, ranked 45th. Map of all country indices is shown above.
