How to spot a trendy logo

How to spot a trendy logo

How to spot a trendy logo 01/24/2004 11:31 AM

Interesting piece on current trends in logo design (merging blobs, swooshes, pop-art finneals, the color green, wireframes, etc). Though it strikes me that, given my penchant for dinstinctiveness in logomarks that I would be liekley to use this as a crib-sheet for critiquing the logo-development undertaken by my design-firm: "Dude, a green wireframe swooshy pop-art blob? That is so played-out. I want the new-new." Or, as Ian McDonald put it in his brilliant novel, Out on Blue Six:

So I said, like, whazz new, I mean, like new new, not old new, yuh know, like last-week new, so she said, this yulp in the shop, "This is new," like she said, "Cheez, like everyone, but everyone's going to be wearing one next week," like, whazz a yulp know 'bout fashion? Anyway, I thought, well, maybeez sheez right, so, I got one, so I did like, whadyou think? Isn't it wheeeee! like. Isn't it the most? Meanasay, you not got fashion, you not got nothing!

"The Blog Generation Takes Up Its Trowels" is a NY Times article on young urban gardners, many of whom are artists. The article describes, "a passion that is blossoming among a certain segment of culturally plugged-in urban 20-somethings and early-30-somethings. They may not own backyards, but they are determined to make things grow." Why that sounds just like me! Alas, I found the article annoying and hipstery, but I'm happy that more people are discoverying the joys of gardening.

Also, what? "The Blog Generation"? Egad.

Trendy Geek announced on Thursday the release of modified versions of its iPod protector, Pod Shield, that were made to fit Apple's recently released 4G iPods. Like their predecessors, the new Pod Shields are made of a thin, transparent film that clings to the MP3 player with static electricity. The front covers just the iPod's display while the back protects the entire stainless steel surface, so the controls, inputs and dock connector are still accessible. Pod Shields, which still fit previous iterations of the iPod, sell in packs of three for US$12.99.

Trendy appliances break down more, and
their owners don't care
06/05/2005 11:42 PM
Cory Doctorow: Which? magazine, the UK equivalent of Consumer Reports, reports that Dyson, Smeg and other trendy appliance brands are less reliable than their less fashionable cousins, but are still highly rated by their owners. (also: "Smeg!")
Within six years of purchase 29% of upright Dyson vacuum cleaners and 22% of their cylinder vacuums needed repairing. The Dyson repair rate is also getting worse. A 2002 survey found that 21% of the company's upright vacuums needed repairing within six years, and a 2001 survey revealed that 14% of its cylinder vacuums broke down.

But despite ranking low in reliability, Dyson owners are still relatively likely to recommend the products to a friend. An average of 38% would recommend their Dyson, making it the fifth most popular vacuum cleaner, despite being the least reliable of those surveyed.

Separate tests by Which? have proved the Dyson cleaners to be among the most effective vacuums, despite them breaking down more. "It's a real shame [that Dysons break down]", the magazine says, "because its vacs are the only upright models we've found that clean really well."

The Puma "French Pleasure" Campaign: Hoax From felixsalmon.com. via the AdCritic daily newsletter [Gawker got there first, however, on a tip from Me meFirst], comes a meme-hacking story straight from the Anarchist's Cookbook chapter on propaganda of the semiotic deed: the infamous Puma viral-marketing scam. It was Tim who got the official statement from the marketing geeks:
It has been brought to our attention that several unauthorized, sexually suggestive advertisements portraying the PUMA brand have been released over the Internet. We are appalled that images like these would be created and distributed under the PUMA name. As a brand, we seek to take a unique perspective toward our advertising in an effort to challenge the boundaries of our industry; however we would never consider using these tactics. We are in the process of researching the circumstances and reserve any legal steps available.

Look Ma, a logo for Fink

Look Ma, a logo for Fink 10/28/2003 11:07 PM
As you surely noticed, Fink has a logo. This is the result of our Logo contest held earlier this year. This new, official, logo has been displayed since the 24th of October and those of you who wondered how it has been picked and what the name of the winner is should read up in the PR section. The longer explanation also features a larger version of the logo itself, so that you may have a closer look at its details. We like our new logo, we hope that you will like it too. IMPORTANT: We do not yet have a formal licensing agreement for the new logo and so are unable to give permission to distribute it. Currently, it can only be displayed on the Fink web page. Thank you for your understanding.

Fink and MacWelt hope that many of you will participate as we might just find some prices for the winners. Good luck and.... start drawing.
