Happy 20th Birthday, Computer Viruses

Happy 20th Birthday, Computer Viruses 11/10/2003 11:02 PM
The BBC is reporting that this week is the 20th anniversary of the first computer virus being created. Apparently, others had discussed such a program, but no one had actually written a virus until 1983 by a PhD. student at USC. The virus was just a demonstration of how a virus might work on Vax systems. Apparently, folks who saw the student's presentation were so angered by it that they told him to stop running such tests. Of course, banning something often seems to make it more likely to spread - and (as you're probably aware), now we have viruses everywhere.

A Happy 20th Birthday to Microsoft Word
and Excel for Mac
01/08/2004 07:39 PM
Twenty years later, Microsoft continues to deliver on Gates' promise. At Macworld Conference and Expo 2004 in San Francisco this week, Microsoft announced plans to release Office 2004 for Mac and Virtual PC for Mac Version 7 in the first half of 2004. These new releases, and other products Microsoft makes for the Mac, are developed by an oasis of Mac-only developers in an otherwise Windows world at Microsoft: the Macintosh Business Unit (Mac BU). The Mac BU has made its mark in the industry, and at Microsoft, in large part by transforming four applications -- Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft Entourage -- into the most popular productivity suite for the Mac platform.

The set is completely comprised of music from the later half of, you guess it, the 20th century and makes for a very entertaining and nostalgic listen. File location details inside. In yet another case where the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing, it appears that 20th Century Fox, while being involved in the Supreme Court case against Grokster, is also advertising new movies via Grokster adware. It certainly suggests there are some at the company that think Grokster represents a legitimate way to reach consumers -- something the industry keeps insisting is impossible.
