Edmunds (the car buyer information company) send a reporter undercover to work as a car salesman and report back on the tricks of the trade. It's a great read, and there's a dealer jargon glossary at the end of the piece.

Pounder - A deal with $1,000 profit in it. "Doctor comes in and buys the top of the line model, fully loaded - and he pays sticker! That'll be a two pounder for me."

Rip their heads off - This describes taking a customer to the cleaners. "I stole their trade in, I sold them the car at a grand over sticker - I mean, I just ripped their heads off."

Roach - A customer with bad credit. Not to be confused with the "roach coach" (see entry below). "The guy looked good. But we ran his credit and he turned out to be a roach. We're talkin' a 400 credit score here."

I wonder why none of the social networking bloggers picked up on this?

The hit movie "The Day After Tomorrow" provides profiles and lots of coolio features in a Flash based interface.  Much of the design looks like a Laszlo app.

You can put up your own face, list off your three fav songs (which are then compiled into a Top 10 list) and give responses to standard "End of the World" questions.  All in all it's quite an impressive site for a movie site.  I wonder who did it?

No FOAF though and your profile registration requires human intervention to approve it.

If you hang around on web-related mailing lists long enough, you start getting the idea that the future is full of metadata. Now, this metadata may or may not be XML, or it may or may not be RDF or OWL or a dozen other technologies with impressive-sounding words like “ontology” in their names. It may or may not be the long-dreamt-of (and often derided) “Semantic Web.” In fact, it may or may not be a dozen different buzzwords, and it may or may not be a good thing. But whatever the future is, it will definitely be full of metadata; on this the experts agree. To my mind there’s a problem with this: the argument always seems to depend on technologies which don’t exist or aren’t quite ready yet, so it always falls back to talking about how things will be “in the future,” which may never get here. Luckily, there's an easy way to add oodles of metadata to your documents right this minute, without having to learn anything more complicated than trusty old HTML 4.01. If it catches on, “the future” might get here a lot sooner than expected.
