Helmut Newton, Who Remade Fashion Photography, Dies at 83 - NYT

I first met Helmut and his wife at Timothy Leary's house. Tim and Helmut were good friends. (I guess that would mean that Tim would be 83 if he were alive now...) They were the same age and even wore the same tennis shoes. I remember Helmut and as a funny and really cool guy.

When I was working on Indian Runner, we asked him to do some of the photography for the movie and I remember hanging out with him in Omaha, Nebraska where we were shooting the film. I remember helping him find "corn-fed beauties of the Midwest" during his free time. He had this amazing talent for making women feel beautiful and capturing this on film.

I had always loved landscape photography since I was a child, but Helmut was the one who got me interested in portraits and helped me appreciate the amazing talent required to take portraits.

I'm going to miss you Helmut. Say hi to Tim for me if you see him.

“Producing slide shows in iPhoto, carrying them around on the iPod, and showing them off to friends and relatives is so easy and works so well I’m in photographer’s heaven,” writes Linda Knapp for the Seattle Times, reviewing iPod photo. “I particularly like not having to learn new software to create slide shows specifically for the player — I’ve already created them in iPhoto to view on the Mac, upload to my Web site and burn on DVDs — all I have to do is move them to the player.” [Jan 31, 2005]

Photographer James Nachtwey

Photographer James Nachtwey 12/24/2003 12:44 AM
New obsession: the work of a war photographer named James Nachtwey, who was injured earlier this month in Iraq. At left: "Iraqi soldiers search for what they thought was a downed American pilot along the banks of the Tigris River. No pilot was found, and the U.S. denied that any aviator had been lost over Baghdad." T his is a link to his work this Spring in Iraq, and rumor has it there's more work from Iraq coming from him soon. This book of his work released a few years ago is fantastic. There's an update about his condition online here. (thanks Invi sible Cowgirl)

Photographer Naomi Harris

Photographer Naomi Harris 04/12/2005 03:56 AM
David Pescovitz: At "the f blog," Jenn Shreve writes:
Images Assign 10 My husband recently turned me on to this fabulous New York photographer, Naomi Harris. Her portraits of humans are shot within a public context--a Rubiks Cube competition, a gathering of swingers, a Miami Beach retirement community, spring break, a porn star academy--and expose the paradoxical relationship between the individual and the system they are acting within. She captures moments that brilliantly juxtapose the fantasy stage drop with the banal details that undermine its desired effect. She is one of a rare few female photographers to document the porn world, though, frankly, the art world’s current obsession with the adult industry is starting to wear extremely thin. I found her Rubik’s cute, retirement photos, and spring break coverage more intriguing. Not (all are) office safe, unless you work somewhere kinky.

Mark Frauenfelder: tusks Gilles Nicolet, a photographer for National Geographic borrowed some old elephant husks from the Tanzania Department of Wildlife, and then had hunters pose with them as if they'd be taken from a freshly fallen elephant. He was busted after observant readers noticed ID numbers on one of the tusks. It turns out some of his other photos were staged, too.

(It makes you wonder if this story, by the same photographer, is a tale tale: "French photographer Gilles Nicolet reports that angry bees penetrated his protective, modern gear and stung him on the nose, lips and forehead, and left two stingers in the eye he was using to peer through the viewfinder of his camera.") Grant Hutchinson over at Splorp.com is reporting on a new and ultra geeky podcast called Green Light Go which bills itself as being "dedicated to our green friend the Newton, the eMate, all its cousins, everyone who uses, develops for and enjoys our little green friend." It is not clear at this time whether or not it is possible to actually download podcasts to a Newton with the same ease that iPod owners enjoy, but if there is a way, the Newton community will find it.

A day in the bl0g of an erotic
photographer. And, China Nympho Cream.

Xeni Jardin: nympho cream Nerve.com recently launched "The Daily Siege" -- a blog-oid daily feature from fashion and erotic shooter Clayton James Cubitt, aka Siege, who's been the subject of numerous BoingBoing posts in the past. Some of the UI and access decisions the Nerve.com guys made, I'm not nuts about. But the content here -- both the images and the first-person narrative -- includes some real gems. For instance, this stream-of-consciousness post in which Siege explains how he went through a series of editing decisions that took a shot from its original raw state to an edited, reimagined, and dramatically richer state for publication. Very few personal blogs dig inside the creative process of working artists with this level of intimacy. Cool stuff. As Siege says here, it's like math class -- where you show your "dirty work" to your classmates, and share all of the details, both flattering and otherwise. Right, and then, well, there's the "China Nympho Cream" post. Quick snapshots (1, 2, 3) of an erotic-enhancement ointment of dubious origin, tucked inside ultra-bizarro packaging. Link to Siege's blog. Temporary access for this paid-subscription-required site is username: cheapass, password: cheapass. (NSFW)
