Space Invaders returns!

I’m old enough to remember when it was new. My arcade-playing days predate the first-person games—for me, arcade games are about shooting things in outer space. Controlling a human walking around with a gun seems so mundane and puny. I need rockets and ray guns.

I was a big fan of Galaga and Asteroids too, and I’ve spent many hours playing Swoop and Maelstrom.

Another favorite was Missile Command. Does anyone know of a good OS X version of Missile Command?

Paid Search Battles Get Nasty

Paid Search Battles Get Nasty 06/01/2004 04:14 AM
It seems that paid search is getting a ton of interest these days, with the two big providers being Google and Yahoo. As competitors, though, the battle is starting to get a little nastier. Yahoo recently banned Shopping.com from advertising on their site, because the ads directed users to a page that included Google ads. Eventually, the two companies worked out an agreement to include some Yahoo ads as well. The article points out that this raises some questions about how companies will deal with being blocked from advertising on certain search engines if they do business with the other. To be honest, though, this policy from Yahoo seems shortsighted. It's not as if they don't get money from Shopping.com when people click through the ads - even if they then go on to click through more Google ads. Why should Yahoo care what the person does after they've clicked through the ad - so long as the ad results are relevant? Obviously, they want more advertising dollars (and getting another deal with a company is valuable), but this seems to be a case where the company was doing more to take business away from a competitor than make business better for themselves.

Patent Battles Are Good News For
Spammers

Patent Battles Are Good News For
Spammers
09/20/2004 01:24 PM
While we've already discussed how Microsoft has run into plenty of complaints about the patents they're trying to get for their email authentication scheme, Sender ID, the patents in question have finally been shown publicly -- and it's no wonder people were upset. The patents are extremely broad. Also, some are claiming that Microsoft basically took the work being done by the Anti-Spam Research Group on authentication, and brought it to the patent office. Of course, if that's the case, then there should be plenty of evidence of prior art -- but it's still a legal hassle that isn't necessary. All these patent battles really mean is that any solution to spam is a long way off. As anti-spammers battle over who owns what intellectual property, spammers don't really care at all about patents (even if AT&T owns the patent on how to spam).
