E-Print Network 01/24/2004 07:29 AM

E-Print Network
http://www.osti.gov/eprints/
Created by the United States Department of Energy, this website allows users to explore online papers that have been submitted for distribution and review among peers; for publication in journals; or for presentations at conferences. Through the E-print Network, advanced students and scientists can search e-prints on many websites and databases, browse e-prints by subject, and find many scientific societies. Although the network primarily contains physics-related documents, e-prints dealing with other subjects such as chemistry, material sciences, and nuclear sciences are also included. E-print Network
http://www.osti.gov/eprints/
The E-print Network is a set of powerful tools that facilitate access to and use of scientific and technical e-prints communicating the results of a wide range of research activities of interest to the Department of Energy. These e-prints reside on thousands of Web sites and data bases, both large and small, at remote locations worldwide, employing a wide variety of technologies, architectures, platforms, formats, software, and search engines to manage and retrieve data. The E-print Network pulls these vast and widely dispersed data together through a Deep Web search capability that allows the patron to search across and into full text as it resides at the various hosting sites and, using the technical capabilities available at each site, returns results that can be combined, assimilated, and used in support of scientific research. In addition, access is provided to a vast store of e-print information available on the Web through a browse capability across more than ten thousand sites.

The E-print Network, however, is more than a source for scientists and engineers to find, assimilate, and use scientific and technical e-prints in their fields of interest. Also central to research efforts are the interpersonal activities which occur on a one-to-one basis, in small groups, in classrooms and seminars, and at large or small conferences. These interpersonal activities are in fact research communications, too, and it is frequently through these research communications that much of the strategically important activities in which researchers engage are shared.

Print Me Up A New Arm, Please

Print Me Up A New Arm, Please 04/06/2005 02:16 PM
The old inkjet printer has been getting some more interesting uses lately. There are those who are print ing electronic circuits with them, and those who are print ing food with them -- but why stop there? Some researchers are working on a way to use inkjet printers to spray live human cells on a patient to help regenerate bone and muscle. As you might imagine, it's still quite a ways off, so don't expect to be able to print yourself new body parts just yet. Of course, when old fashioned ink costs more than fine champagne or expensive perfume just imagine how much a bit of muscle tissue is going to set you back.

Print Window

Print Window 02/05/2005 10:11 PM
Print Window from SearchWare Solutions gives users the ability to print a file listing directly from the Mac OS X Finder. Using Print Window, the user can create file listings with control over what is printed and how it will look. File listings can be generated for a single folder, different subfolders or entire disks. Installation of Print Window is just like with any other Mac OS X application and can be done by simply dragging the Print Window icon to the application folder on the hard drive after downloading. Print Window is available in two versions, Standard and Advanced, both accessible from the same application. The Standard version is available for use free of charge and contains limited features in comparison to the Advanced version. One of the advanced features includes printing file listings pre-formatted to fit in a standard CD or DVD case, with CD covers printing as a booklet if the listing takes up more than one page. Using Print Window to generate a file listing by can be done by using one of these five methods: Command-P; Drag and Drop; Dock Menu; and Services. After selecting one of the methods, the Print Window Options window will appear allowing the user to select the appearance of the file listings. Once the options are set up within Print Window the folder can then be selected for printing and the print dialogue box will appear, just as it would when printing any document. Print Window 3.1 will operate in Advanced mode for the first 30 days, providing access to extra features and options not available in the Standard mode. After the 30 days the user will need to purchase a license of Print Window Advanced in order to continue to use the Advanced features and options. Single-user licenses of Print Window are available from SearchWare Solutions' Store for $15. System Requirements: Print Window requires Mac OS X 10.1.5 or above and 128 MB of RAM though the company recommends at least Mac OS X 10.2.6 or above with 256 MB of RAM as some features are not available when running Mac OS X 10.1.5. Pros: Easy to install and use CD and DVD case formatting Cons: Less features if running less than Mac OS 10.2.6 If your company has a product you would like Spymac to review, please send an email to kristie@spymac.com.

Beauty in print

Beauty in print 08/03/2004 04:35 PM
Browsing at my local library, I just came across a display of the winners of this year's Canadian Awards for Excellence in Book Design. I was blown away by the design and content of The Gryphons of Paris, a limited edition collection of black-and-white photos of surpassing beauty. This led me to the web page of the photographer, Ronald Hurwitz, his city vignettes and remarkable portraits. A good reminder that not everything of value can be found on the internet.
