Now *that* is a photoblog. Chronologically indexed gallery of
interplanetary snapshots from this weekend's Mars landing. The first
images sent back are of limited quality -- and only in black and white
-- because data transmission rate from Spirit's antenna back to Earth
is limited. Higher-res color images are expected to be relayed back
from the orbiting Mars Global Surveyor and Mars Odyssey Spacecraft
later today, according to Mission Control. At left:
"This mosaic image taken by the navigation camera on the Mars
Exploration Rover Spirit has been further processed, resulting in a
significantly improved 360 degree panoramic view of the rover on the
surface of Mars."

one of two NASA robots currently exploring Mars has exceeded its life
span and is showing signs of wear, but it's still
running and still sending back new
photos. A new Nature
article describes the aging rover's biggest problems: the batteries
are
running low due to weak winter sunlight and the gearbox on right front
wheel has developed a fault.
NASA engineers have instructured the rover to drive
backwards, which reduces the excessive current being drawn by the
front wheel. The weak light on Mars now allows only
enough battery power for an hour or two of activity each day. Mars and
Earth will be out of communications for a week around September 10 and
the current plan is to have Spirit hibernate all week while it's
batteries recharge. Despite the problems Spirit has
traveled over 3 kilometers from its landing site and is now halfway up
the 200 meter-high Columbia
Hills.

Tim Oren is now an Armed
VC with a little help from Marc Danziger, formerly Armed
Liberal, whom he met via Winds
of Change blog. Marc has unmasked his identity and joined
Spirit
of America as its COO to help spread the spirit of
America abroad by
sending donated supplies to countries like Iraq.
To be honest, I think the effort amounts to dumping sugar into a
sea of hate but it's
a Good Thing for our spirit at least. Maybe I am soured by
the spread of anti-American
sentiments among young Koreans. I tried to engage them online
but they have
constructed a strong echo chamber around them to protect their
warped viewpoints.
Iraq will be worse even if Iraq becomes a strong ally of America
and Iraqis are drowned
in everything American for the next 50 years like Korea has
been. Internet?

I was walking past Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills on Saturday, and
phonecammed this in the window: "Flowerbomb," a new perfume by Viktor
and Rolf. The display consisted of a gigantic, grenade-shaped perfume
bottle streaming a cascade of red rose petals. There's even a little
pull-thing sticking out of the side to activate the spray. Just like
on a real grenade.

pictures again. Apparently, Spirit
had a software glitch where it had too many files
open and was causing
a reboot. Nasa believes they have reproduced the problem and know how
to fix it. The opportunity rover has the same problem and they are
aware of it and are trying to fix the problem before it becomes an
issue with the Opportunity rover as well. As NateW reported in a
previous article,
Spirit is
recovering bit by bit. Nasa is hoping Spirit will be fully recovered
in a few weeks.
