Mars Hills, Crater Yield Evidence of

08/19/2004 11:31 AM
The hills of Mars yield more tantalizing clues about how water shaped the Red Planet. Tests by NASA's robotic geologist, Spirit, found out this information, while its twin, Opportunity, observed the deep crater it climbed into two months ago.

Scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, said Spirit discovered a swath of bedrock that showed signs of being altered by water. It may yield clues about the planet's primordial atmosphere. Scientist believe the bedrock was thrust up from below the lava-covered surface of the vast Gusev Crater, where Spirit landed Jan. 3 and spent months crossing to arrive at a series of promontories dubbed the Columbia Hills.

For the past week, the rover has conducted a series of tests on a rock nicknamed Clovis, that is perched on a spur about 30 feet above the plain. Both Spirit and Opportunity found ancient evidence of water on Mars earlier in their missions, but new data recorded by Spirit's scientific instruments this week suggests that the life-giving liquid was once more plentiful than they thought.

“Recent analyses of ESA’s Mars Express data reveal that concentrations of water vapour and methane in the atmosphere of Mars significantly overlap. This result, from data obtained by the Planetary Fourier Spectrometer (PFS), gives a boost to understanding of geological and atmospheric processes on Mars, and provides important new hints to evaluate the hypothesis of present life on the Red Planet. PFS observed that, at 10-15 kilometres above the surface, water vapour is well mixed…

Magic may happen this evening. The USA will attempt to safely land a scientific golf cart on Mars at about 8.30pm, California time:
Two NASA (news - web sites) Mars landers -- Spirit and Opportunity -- are speeding toward "sweet spot" touch down sites at different, but scientifically attractive locations on Earth's mysterious neighbor.

The opening act in this $820 million drama to place dual robot geologists on Mars is the landing of the Mars Exploration Rover (MER) dubbed Spirit tonight at about 8:35 p.m. Pacific Standard Time (PST). The target: Gusev Crater -- a possible former lake in a giant impact crater on Mars. Primary among the mission's scientific goals is to search for and characterize a wide range of rocks and soils that hold clues to past water activity on Mars

Well, now what do we do with them? "The Bush administration is preparing plans for possible lifetime detention of suspected terrorists, including hundreds whom the government does not have enough evidence to charge in courts, The Washington Post reported Sunday.... As part of a solution, the Defense Department, which holds 500 prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, plans to ask the U.S. Congress for $25 million to build a 200-bed prison to hold detainees who are unlikely to ever go through a military tribunal for lack of evidence, defense officials told the newspaper."

Using Google For Evidence

Using Google For Evidence 05/13/2004 01:43 PM
We've written about reporters who use Google search result numbers as "evidence" of something, but it seems a bit more serious to realize that judges are doing the same thing. For example, a judge who ordered a mother not to smoke near her daughter cited "a Google search that lists 60,000-plus links for 'secondhand smoke' and 30,000-plus links for 'secondhand smoke children.'" Now, I have nothing against protecting people from second-hand smoke, but the number of results on a Google search doesn't seem like something that should be relied on as an indicator of facts. Others have noted the lack of Google search results as an indicator of proof as well. The article lists a large number of cases where judges have relied on Google "evidence" to back up their decision, which seems a bit scary - though, perhaps it's the new "community standard." Since certain laws rely on "community standards," perhaps judges are using Google results as an indicator of what the internet community feels.

More Evidence That P2P Users Buy CDs

More Evidence That P2P Users Buy CDs 05/20/2004 05:43 AM
Just how much evidence will it take before the recording industry realizes that there are multiple (possibly conflicting) effects to being able to download free music. Study< /a> after study after study after study have shown that many people who use or are interested in using free file sharing programs are likely to buy more CDs, because they view file sharing networks like a much more useful form of radio: as a way to try out lots of different music and determine what they like. It's a "try before you buy" method of finding new music. Now, a new study is getting a lot of press because it claims that people using legal download services like iTunes tend to buy CDs, but as Jason Schultz points out, that's basically saying that people who buy music, buy music. Big deal. What's much more interesting is that the report notes (though, it's hidden at the bottom) that people who use file sharing networks tend to buy CDs as well - though, not quite as many as those who use paid download services. However, if one were to believe the recording industry's spin on things - no one would ever buy a CD if they can get those songs online for free. At what point does the industry admit that there's an awful lot of evidence out there that they're just wrong? It's okay to admit they made a mistake. If they were to embrace file sharing, and realize it's promotional powers, they would end up making a lot more money, but they refuse to pay attention.
