Linux-VServer allows you to create virtual private
servers and security contexts which operate like a
normal Linux server, but allow many independent
servers to be run simultaneously in one box at
full speed. All services, such as ssh, mail, Web,
and databases, can be started on such a VPS,
without modification, just like on any real
server. Each virtual server has its own user
account database and root password and doesn't
interfere with other virtual servers.
Changes:
A small bug in IPv6 hiding was fixed, a memory
leak in an error path was removed, and a
mysterious double allocation issue in x25 was
fixed. iunlink and barrier update for XFS as well
as the proc/mounts virtualization were corrected.
A new claim/release scheme replaces the double
refcounting. Legacy support was separated, and a
bunch of new limits/accountings were added
(anon_rss, locks, shm, forks). A new ccap that
protects network mounts was added. Compile time
information was added to the proc info.

Linux VServer procfs Permission Weakness
Linux VServer procfs Permission Weakness
07/07/2004 04:44 AM“Veit Wahlich has reported a weakness in Linux VServer, which
can be exploited by certain malicious, local users to cause a DoS
(Denial of Service) or gain knowledge of sensitive information. The
vulnerability is caused due to weak permissions on procfs, which
allows a privileged user on a virtual server to manipulate the
permissions on “/proc” for all virtual servers or gain
knowledge of information related to other virtual
servers….Solution: Update to version 1.28.”

03/25/2005 09:33 AMIBM is on a worldwide tour to try to boost development on the Linux
platform and help out users moving from Windows and Unix. A 40-city
series of Linux technical briefings now under way intends to equip
developers with Linux programming skills and information on
development tools from the IBM WebSphere and Rational product lines.
The half-day briefings, which began this month in Atlanta, are
intended to assist corporate developers as well as ISVs and channel
partners. The briefings are entitled, "Migrating and developing new
applications for Linux." While IBM does not have a Web page
specifically devoted to the tour dates for the Linux briefings, dates
of briefings can be found by geography and region at

Ghost for Linux 0.15 (Development Kit
branch)

Ghost for Linux is a hard disk and partition
imaging and cloning tool similar to "Norton
Ghost"(c) and (tm) by Symantec. The created images
are optionally compressed, and they can be stored
on a local hard drive or transferred to an
anonymous FTP server. A drive can be cloned using
the "Click'n'Clone" function. g4l supports file
splitting if the local filesystem does not support
writing files >2GB. The included kernel supports
ATA, serial-ATA, and SCSI drives. Common network
cards are supported. It is packaged as a bootable
CD image with an ncurses GUI for easy use.
Changes:
This release adds the Ghost for Linux update script that supports
dhcpd,
lzop, and many other modifications.

Busting Windows-to-Linux development
myths
04/28/2004 10:29 AMIf you've been developing for Windows for (n+1) years, you might
consider venturing into open source software development a daunting
prospect. Reading the Free Software Foundation Web site makes it look
like all development is done in straight C -- of course there's no
Visual C++ or Visual Basic. Linux doesn't have its own component model
and there is nothing even remotely like DirectX for low-level hardware
access. It's just too hard for the dyed-in-the-wool Windows developer
to program for Linux.

Linux kernel development process thwarts

Linux kernel development process thwarts
subversion attempt
11/06/2003 12:18 PMIn a stunning verification of Eric S. Raymond's open source adage,
"Many eyes make all bugs shallow," an attempt to place malicious
"backdoor" code in the Linux kernel 2.6 development tree was detected
and rejected almost immediately. The code, if it had become part of
the final kernel release, would have allowed a remote user to take
control of machines running that Linux kernel version. Unauthorized
code snippets, often called Easter Eggs, are common in closed-source
programs but are relatively rare in the open source world. It's easy
for developers to hide either humorous or malicious code in programs
whose inner workings are hidden, but as this Linux kernel incident
shows, the open source development process carries a degree of
built-in immunity to this kind of problem.
