theodp writes "Not to be outdone by Amazon's 1-Click patent, Microsoft snagged a patent from the USPTO Tuesday for a Time based hardware button for application launch, which covers causing different actions to occur depending upon whether a button is pressed for a short period of time, a long period of time, or multiple times within a short period of time. So does pressing car radio buttons for different periods of time to change or set stations constitute patent infringement?" What about double-clicking? Seems like a fair amount of prior art. I know my caller ID box requires a "double-click" to delete phone numbers. Also, I may not remember correctly, but I was under the impression that Apple's famous "one-button" mouse allows you to fake a right mouse click if you hold down the button.

Finally, Apple designs software that looks just as nice on Windows as it does on OS X. I finally installed QuickTime on my primary system, after seeing that they squished the horrid ClearType rendering issue that plauged previous 6.x versions. iTunes? iLike a lot. Is it gonna make me return my 60GB Nomad Zen? Nope; I like stuff that supports WMA. Plus, with the ER-6 Isolator Earphones, just about any portable jukebox sounds great. Is it gonna make me wanna sign up for Apple's music service? Nope; I've got hundreds of CDs sitting on my bookshelf, ready to rip. Is this release gonna make me any less pissy about the recent changes over at EMusic? Nope. Sorry, had to throw that in there. Unfortunately, there's no "end all, be all" digital entertainment service out there. Dammit!...

I wanna go to Singapore

I wanna go to Singapore 02/07/2005 01:51 AM

James Seng keeps making me feel like jumping on a plane and going to Singapore. He's now talking about SingAREN GIX - an Gigabit (Internet2-like) educational network.

That alone is a reason to go to Singapore - but there are many other projects where James is helping their government promulgate a wired distributed society. Perfect for DLAs.

I'll get there soon enough - James@!

You Say You Wanna Revolution

You Say You Wanna Revolution 08/22/2004 07:48 AM
Do you hate the government? Do you want to smash the corporate slave state? Are you an anarchist, punk, eco-freak with a bad haircut and attitude? Is your idea of a fun hobby sitting in your basement practicing your bomb-making skills? Do you listen to Rage Against the Machine all the time and have your walls lined with posters of Che Guevara? Do you actually want to do something to bring about the Revolution instead of getting stoned and rambling about the Zapatistas? Well here's something easy and powerful you can do to help bring the walls down: Vote for Bush.

So, you wanna be a pyro?

So, you wanna be a pyro? 03/08/2004 11:03 PM
BoingBoing buddy Hutch (pyrotechnics guru who works on the Burning of the Man, as well as Hollywood stuff) points us to a series of workshops in Southern California where you can learn to operate fireworks and do pyro stage effects.

The seminars cost only $15 each to attend (what is that in Starbusian currency, like, four venti cappucinos?), and they're offered by a group called Fireworks America. This year, they'll be held in three locations: March 13 - Los Angeles area, March 20 - San Diego area, March 27 - Stockton area. Hutch says, "This is a great opportunity to learn more about fireworks and stage effects. Courses are available for every level of experience. There will be special 'get your license' training for those that want it (please note: this is for Public Display and Theatrical licenses, it does not include Special Effects licensing information). These seminars are always informative and a lot of fun! I learn new stuff every time I attend. If you're interested in doing more shows, this is the place to meet other operators and get on their crews."

Attendees must be 18 years or older. And if you're coming with no prior experience or pyro scene connections, don't expect to walk away with an invitation to join someone's crew. For good reasons, that tends to take time, say folks in the biz. To RSVP for one of the seminars, FIRST visit this link for background info, then call Ashley or Dianna at 800-464-7976, and for more background visit the Fireworks America site.

Buy the 7am News ticker service! It appears that the long running 7am News Ticker is up for sale. It was supposed to cease its service yesterday (June 20) but it's still up today. I've used it for many years. I like that it hits the Guardian and the BBC newsfeeds, plus you can add one of your own for free. It's a cool little service. I hope someone rescues it.

Asking price for the property is only $665,000 USD, in a neighborhood described as "calm & safe." Link (Thanks, Jean-Luc)

Airplanes aren't the only things in the air at Spokane International Airport.

On Wednesday, the airport unveiled a wireless system that makes the Internet available to anyone with a computer that can access it. Travelers no longer need to plug into telephone jacks to check e-mail or work on-line.

And next week, a 100-block area of downtown Spokane goes wireless.
