Browser Hijackers Ruining More Than Just
Computers

Browser Hijackers Ruining More Than Just
Computers
05/11/2004 12:17 PM
As spyware and browser hijackers become even more evil, some are having an impact well beyond the computer that they take over. Apparently, some people claim that they've been arrested for child porn that such programs put on their hard drive, while others say they've been fired for similar things. The stories in the article don't have that much evidence backing them up - but even if they're not true, it's certainly possible that these things could happen. There have been (again, unsubstantiated) reports in the past about e-extor tion rings that threaten to put child porn on your hard drive, so whether or not it's really happening, people have definitely thought about it. Of course, like most new malicious attacks on personal computer users (spam, viruses, phishing, adware, spyware, trojans, worms, etc...) things are likely to get worse before anyone tries to come up with a real solution.

Building hijackers in S Africa take over
empty bldgs and charge rent
04/06/2005 09:02 PM
Cory Doctorow: A South African news-site reports on "building hijackers" who stick up an empty building's rent-a-cops, then take over and fill the building with innocent tenants, collecting rent until the real cops show up to evict them.
They demand an up-front deposit, so make R300 000 in just the first month The syndicate, which is highly organised, monitors all the empty buildings around the inner city. It then sends in bus-loads of armed gangs into vacant buildings, threaten guards with firearms, then starts renting rooms out at between R500 and R600 a month.

They collect rent for six to eight months knowing that the legal system is slow and, by the time the owners obtain eviction orders, they have enjoyed the benefits of the rents. They then simply walk away, leaving the tenants on the streets.

Can You Rate Security Disclosures Like
eBay Feedback?
04/14/2005 04:52 AM
Computer security has been in the news again a lot recently. It never seems to go away, but the flow of articles rises and falls over time. One of the big issues, though, is on the disclosure of information concerning security issues. While many people think there needs to be more disclosure, the fear is that the information flow would be overwhelming, and the opposite of the intended effect would occur. Instead of getting information out quickly, it would simply hide the important security disclosures amongst all the muck. At a panel discussion recently, though, someone suggested that security disclosures could be ranked on an eBay-style feedback system, to help let the overall community separate the important disclosures from the junk (and marketing-disguised-as-a-security-alert). Of course, lots of communities have tried to build up trust metrics based on eBay's, and it's not always easy to get it working well. It really requires community commitment, and that can be difficult to get.

The second worst, grannyvon10 (score of -19) earned her negative whuffie from a seller who says she didn't pay for 118 dolls she purchased. The third worst eBay member on Earth, according to this page, is jammin-garage (score -17), who has earned a bunch of complaints from people who say they've paid for stuff he failed to send them. Town Sold On eBay Finally Sold For
Real... But Not On eBay
05/21/2004 02:35 AM
Back in 2002 there was a tremendous amount of hype when Bridgeville, the small (mostly deserted) California town was put up for sale on eBay. It eventually sold in an auction for $1.8 million - and got a tremendous amount of press attention. The only problem: the $1.8 million bid was a hoax. A whole year went by and the owners of the "town" sheepishly admitted that the buyer (and his money) never showed up. Now, however, the town has been sold again - but not on eBay, and back down at its original asking price of $700,000. Even with the failure of the actual sale to go through, though, people still remember that you can "sell a town on eBay," contributing to the use of eBay as a PR platform beyond just its ability to match buyers and sellers.

eBay: Not For Everyone

eBay: Not For Everyone 08/27/2004 03:36 PM
For as big a group of users as eBay has, still there are plenty of people who would just rather buy products at a fixed price. Of course, eBay does now have the "Buy it now" feature that solves exactly that issue, but that seems like a footnote to how eBay is supposed to work. The writer here notes that the whole eBay auction takes too much time. If she wants to buy something, she just wants to buy it. She doesn't want to bid. She doesn't want to check the auction, and she doesn't want to wait a few days to find out if she got the product. For the most part, I've had a similar experience. While I have bought two or three things off of eBay, overall, I've found better prices, reliability and service just by buying at fixed price stores (including eBay's fixed price division Half.com).
