This chap placed an RFID sensor in his hand (or had a doctor
do it, rather) and plans on wiring up his house and car with sensors
that will allow all sorts of wireless magic to happy when he waves it
around. He has a nice FAQ up explaining why he won't be burning in the
lightless flames of hell for such an implant, among other minor
technical details.

devices: Wow. Science fiction come to life.
...a clinical trial in which four-square-millimeter chips
will be placed beneath the skulls of paralyzed patients.
If successful, the chips could allow patients to command a computer

send.

Brain Implants Moving Forward
04/13/2004 02:10 PMJust last month we were talking about how new evidence showed that
brain
controlled implants worked in the human brain, and now a company
is moving forward with
human brain control tests by implanting chips into the brains
of people who are paralyzed people to see if they can control a
computer with their thoughts. Some see this as a step forward, while
others are afraid that it's going too fast - noting that any kind of
problem could set back the entire space for years.

Sf short story about upselling in neural

01/04/2005 02:40 AMCory Doctorow:
Jeremy sez, "I've posted January's story to Futurismic, called
'Consensus Building.' This is another entry from Tom Doyle (author of
September's '
Art's
Appreciation'. It's a mean-spirited story about naked ambition,
greed and the fungibility of computer-assisted memory. We've also
re-opened Futurismic for fiction submissions. We've increased our
permissible word limit to 15,000 and we're going to stay open until we
get a year's worth of stories. Our guidelines are
here and
our web form for submitting is
here."
Futurismic's publishing some amazing science fiction and this story
doesn't disappoint. It's a great 10 minute read, perfect for the Web.
As always, she examined herself in the mirror, searching for
vulnerability. She was rewarded by the usual view: an attractively
fit, Slavic cheek-boned thirty-something who could still pass for
twenty-something.
"I could lose some weight," she thought. But no, she hadn't really
thought that. It was a chip idea. She consciously interfaced with the
AI to avoid further confusion. "What the fuck are you talking about? I
look great."
"You could lose a few pounds." The voice was a more clinical version
of her own. "And your skin could do with some work, too. I can
assist."
"No, thank you. Resume normal." She concentrated on getting ready for
work, but the ritual had been tainted. Despite herself, she felt
larger, flabbier, distinctly less attractive. To compensate, she
deliberately dressed sexier than her usual businesslike attire, with
shorter skirt and flashier blouse, and forced her hair to have a good
day. She refused to submit to moods as a matter of policy.
Another thought tugged at her mind. "You could really use a new
outfit." The tone was that of an enthused continental fashion
designer.

New Cochlear Implants Encourage Nerve
Growth
04/14/2005 01:25 PM
In a move sure to
encourage youth everywhere to keep their amps cranked up... to
eleven, scientists working on a cochlear implant have developed a
device that can actually help "reverse the death and degeneration of
hearing cells that occurs after prolonged deafness." A small electric
current releases specialized molecules that stimulate the nerve
regrowth. Professor Gordon Wallace tells Australian ABC:
We inject small amounts of electricity into the structure
and that causes the release of the molecules and makes them available
to the nerve cells.
The polymer controls the timing of release, and where the molecules
are released, to maximise interaction with nerve
cells.
The implications in assisting people with severe
hearing loss and nerve damage are obviously staggering, but even more
importantly, the technology isn't limited to hearing cells and
nerves—they mention spinal cord repair as well. Check the ABC
article for more details.
