It's Not Just The Text Publishing World
That's Changing

While most of the focus on "niche publishing" has been focused on the text world, some exciting things are starting to h appen in the audio world as well. It's not quite as easy as posting text on a website, but some are starting to really create "amateur talk radio", and they're finding an audience. As you might expect, companies are starting to step up and are looking to offer the ability to easily create and offer your own radio shows. While it is likely to remain a fraction the size of text-based web publishing, it's still interesting to watch what people can do when given the tools to publish themselves. As with the text side of things, there's going to be plenty that's worthless - but the real gems will stand out.

Xeni Tech on NPR: Changing view of
downloading music
03/29/2005 05:20 PM
Xeni Jardin: For today's edition of the NPR program "Day to Day," I report on how the popularity of online file-sharing sevices has affected the way music fans find, distribute and listen to music. I speak with artists Michael Donaldson (aka Q-Burns Abstract Message) and David Byrne, and random folks buying tunes and movies at a record store in Hollywood. The short version? It seems that for many music-lovers, "consuming habits" involve some combination of purchased hard goods (CDs, DVDs, vinyl); paid downloads; and "illicit" P2P or other unpaid forms of tune-sharing. Those complex behaviors may explain in part why some studies show that music sales are up in spite of the fact that P2P use is still high, and growing.

The Changing Face Of Intrusive Online
Advertising: From Pop-Ups To Video

The Changing Face Of Intrusive Online
Advertising: From Pop-Ups To Video
01/19/2004 05:05 AM
The NY Times has two articles today that show the changing face of intrusive internet advertising. First, we find out that, as more and more people are using pop-up blockers, companies are beginning to realize that it's finally time to give up one of this annoying advertising. A recent study suggests that between 20 and 25% of surfers now have some form of pop-up blocking technology installed - and that number is only going up. Some folks in the article complain about how this is taking away their living, but that's a weak argument. If your "living" is based on annoying people, don't be surprised when they figure out a way to deny you of your living. No one has a right to make money annoying the crap out of people. Instead, they should look towards creating something that people value. Of course, that seems unlikely. Instead, advertisers are just looking for newer, more difficult to block, intrusive advertising techniques. The latest, launching tomorrow, is full-motion, 30 second television ads using technology from Unicast. While plenty of online ads now use video, this one is different in that it loads quietly in the background while you're surfing, and when you try to move on from the current site you're browsing, it starts to play the commercial at 30 frames-per-second - much faster than most video you see online. The companies offering this are betting that it won't be too annoying, because the brands involved (Pepsi, AT&T, Honda, Vonage and Warner Brothers) are brands people like. However, surprising people with 30 second videos when they're trying to go to a different page doesn't seem likely to make many people very happy. In fact, some sites have already opted out, pointing out that the web is not TV, and a 30 second surprise ad seems a bit too much. The only way you're going to make people willingly sit through such ads is if viewers search them out - and the way to make that happen is to make them entertaining by themselves - such as what Honda and BMW have done in the past with their online advertising efforts. Those got people interested in finding the ads, and thus, people were willing to spend a lot longer than 30 seconds to watch the ad. However, throwing up a surprise 30 second ad, when people are actively trying to go somewhere else, is only going to piss people off. I also wonder about the technology - and whether or not such sneaky downloading is going to anger users who wonder why their bandwidth disappears for a while (no matter how "behind the scenes" the downloads are supposed to be).

  • NY Post: Apple Tunes Up. Under the terms of some of the deals, the prices for some of the most popular singles could rise to $1.25, according to sources familiar with the negotiations. Songs have previously been priced at 99 cents across the board.
  • And, apparently, album prices will rise even higher than the CDs cost in stores. Now there's a way to encourage buyers. Let's see. Charging more on a medium where the manufacturing costs are zero -- now that's a way to encourage sales. Brilliant.

    The Ongoing Fragmentation Of The
    Downloadable Music Store World
    07/06/2004 05:28 AM
We've discussed many times the fact that there are simply too many downloadable music stores with too many formats out there. It's not that we don't think competition is good, but all these different formats, with all these different restrictions, and different rules about which devices they can play on is making a huge mess of the industry. It's leading to increasing confu sion and resentment from music fans who are pissed off that the music they can supposedly buy from one store won't work on the music player they own, or can't be mixed into a playlist they bought at another store. It's as if ever retail music store in the world had their own format for selling music. If you go into Tower Records they'll give you a CD which can only play on a Tower Records CD player, while in Virgin they give you a special cassette that will only play on special Virgin cassette players. Any marketing person with half a brain would realize that the market would be much, much bigger if they settled on a common format with fewer restrictions. First, the industry couldn't figure out how to embrace file sharing, and now they're doing their best to muck up download stores. It's amazing the recording industry functions at all. It seems to function in spite of itself.
