Is There Demand for On-Demand
Supercomputing?
03/20/2003 01:05 PMThe wizards at IBM have hatched a scheme to supply computing power to
companies for short periods of time, rather than sticking with their
tried-and-true business plan of selling computers outright to
customers. IBM calls this new initiative on-demand computing. Will it
pay off for Big Blue?

LED Bike Spoke Messages
LED Bike Spoke Messages

This is nearly too
geeky, even for us: Hokey Spokes make up a set of LED blades that
attach to your bicycle's spokes and spell out words and poor images
while you ride about town, keenly aware of precicely how idiotic they
make you look. The perfect compliment for your favorite pair of
bicycle shorts, the blades communicate with each other using infrared
and are actually programmed with your Palm, so you can make changes
while on the run. I wouldn't be surprised if an entrepreneuring bike
courier in New York started selling his spoke space for ads, really.
Actually, for only $30-$40, the images they can create look pretty
damn cool. On a computer screen. And not in "real life".

Feel Your Text Messages
Feel Your Text Messages
04/22/2004 08:00 PMResearchers in Germany have developed a new system to
feel text
messages. It's almost as bizarre as it sounds. It's not quite
braille for mobile phones. The idea isn't to translate entire
messages but to give general feelings based on specific keywords,
which are then sent to tiny fingertip sensors to indicate the general
meaning of a message. Thus, it can be used to indicate a meeting
between two people at a certain location by sending the message "you,
me, location." Of course, the learning curve on this seems likely to
make sure it's not used very widely. You need to learn to understand
the tactile "melodies" it gives, you need to program it to understand
certain words and associate them with specific tactile signals, and
you need to tell others messaging you to use the specific keywords
that set the thing off. And, of course, you have to wonder how many
times you'll be in a situation where you can't just glance at the
screen and get the point of the message instead of needing to read the
message by feel. The researchers seem to recognize it isn't entirely
practical - saying that it can be used for art-installations or for
basic communications for those who are deaf or blind, rather than as a
true replacement for basic text messaging. Still, it seems like one
potential interesting use is moving more into the traditional
haptics/feedback world, where it could be used to give people specific
signals. For example, in a car, if a lane departure warning system
senses the driver is drifting out of their lane, the steering wheel
could return a specific "tactile melody" that would alert the driver
to move back into their lane - though, again, perhaps a audio alarm
would be more effective.

the connections it helped maintain between people were rather more
alarming and invasive than I had initially thought:

I should point out (I have been forced to point out) that Stewart
wasn't the friend I was initially talking about. That was someone quite quite different.

Among the goodies you'll find on
Birmingham, UK-based artist Kate Pemberton's site are "an extensive
casio watch camera diary," and a series of embroidered versions of
canned short text message (one of them is shown here). I hope she
posts the other 24 online -- they're great.
Kate says: "Texting is quick and has [largely] replaced the act of
sending a card -- Happy Birthday images for example. If something is
stitched by hand by the message sender, there is a lot of emotion
attached... someone has stitched feelings there, using up much time
and patience. Texting is flippant... however we may be more likely to
send texts to people who we may not send cards to! There are other
ideas within the work about the role of the female image in technology
and the correlation between pixel art and traditional cross-stitch."
