1st Workshop on Friend of a Friend,
Social Networking and the Semantic Web
06/21/2004 01:50 PMCall
for papers, come for the party or just come and hang out.
You can't be a decent standard if you don't have a
conference.

Topics
The FOAF (Friend of a Friend) project explores a unique combination
of themes from social networking, search engines, knowledge
representation and software development. FOAF was designed as a
practical experiment that would highlight the technical, social and
business challenges raised by the next generation of "Semantic" Web
technology. Over the past few years, the FOAF developer community has
been working on standards-based techniques for publishing and
harvesting machine-readable descriptions of people, the links between
them, and the things they create and do. The working assumption of the
project is that such techniques will underpin the deployment of the
next generation of Web technology, W3C's "Semantic Web". The FOAF
project was created in the expectation that these machine-readable
descriptions will grow, as the Semantic Web platform matures, to cover
companies, organisations, documents, groups, products, file sharing
and many other aspects of life, both online and off. The time has come
to evaluate these assumptions in the context of the opportunities and
challenges presented by the rise of FOAF and the Semantic Web.
Social networking is a recent topic gaining much interest and
publicity. Social networking sites are community sites where users can
maintain an online network of friends or associates for social or
business purposes: whether looking for a job, reconnecting with old
friends, moving to a new area, or dating. Most of these sites are
based on a centralised architecture: all users' descriptions are
stored in one big database. There is, however, growing user and
business interest in portability between such sites, and for
sophisticated "single sign-on" mechanisms that reduce the need for
data re-entry, while allowing users to manifest different aspects of
themselves in different contexts. FOAF-based import/export allows such
sites to address user demand for control of "their" data; however,
many deployment, privacy, authentication and engineering issues have
not yet been fully explored. To what extent do mechanisms such as FOAF
change the environment they attempt to describe? How can the
visibility of personal data be restricted to certain audiences? How
can businesses make money when their customers can migrate to new
services with increased ease?
This workshop on FOAF, social networking and the Semantic Web
provides a first chance to discuss the unusual combination of
perspectives - academic and scientific, engineering, social, legal and
business - drawn together by these trends. The workshop aims to bring
together for the first time researchers interested in the effects,
analysis and application of social networks on the (Semantic) Web as
well as practitioners building applications and infrastructure. The
workshop will also try to give a snapshot of current developments, as
well as setting a roadmap for the future of both FOAF and social
networking - especially in the context of the Semantic Web.
Topics of interest for full papers include, but are not limited to
the following:
* Social network metadata standards
* Trust issues in social networks
* Profiles of FOAF, subsets, mapping to other vocabularies and
formats
* Federated digital identity, single sign-on (decentralized
identity management)
* Business models for the Semantic Web (life after banner
advertisements)
* Integration with desktop and mobile applications (chat, IM, P2P,
Bluetooth, address books, RSS/Atom)
* Privacy, etiquette and best practice issues for aggregators
* Infrastructure for social networking
* Applications of online social networking
* Knowledge management with social networks
* Mathematical analysis of social networks
* Exchange of social network information
* Applications of online social networks
* Shared annotations
* Use of digital signatures and encryption with RDF/XML
* RDF-based search engines, data harvesting and syndication
* GUIs (browsers, editors) for FOAF and Semantic Web data
* Formalisms that address practical problems of heterogenous
changing data
* Pragmatics of sharing data schemas across subtly different
datasets

A different kind of May day
05/01/2004 12:38 AMFirst of May is always a big celebration in Finland, especially among
students. Traditions go rampant, all who are able to get out to party
(except for the most hardened cynics), alcohol is consumed in
alarmingly large quantities, and the entire city of Helsinki becomes
one giant outdoor toilet. It is the celebration of life and the end of
winter.
This morning, 50,000 people gather in the Helsinki Kaisaniemi park to
eat breakfast, drink champagne, and enjoy the sun.
Me?
I'm watching Teletubbies with my niece. And chatting with
one-syllable words.
And can't really say that it's a bad thing either.

New kind of web ads
01/17/2004 11:21 PMWeb ad sales to hit $6.9 billion [CNET News.com - The Net]
I sat in a meeting today discussing new kinds of ad sales.
There are people out there who will pay real money (apparently as much
as $6.9B this year) to put pixels in front of your face that have hot
zones to click on. These pixels, usually form the pattern of
text or images that represent products, services or brands.
So how can we take all the pent up energy, potential and creativity
of teh past 15 years - and do somethign creative with this potential -
besides swinging Spiderman interstitials?

Your friend: the FBI
04/15/2004 11:36 AMThoughts for Tax Day: A friend sent t
his article on various rules that restrict the U.S. government
from investigating terrorists. The implication of the article is
that we'd all be better off if the CIA and the FBI could work
unfettered. Certainly the widows and orphans of September 11th
would be better off. Yet our government has a history of pouring
tremendous amounts of effort in the wrong areas, often resulting in
months or years of misery for innocent people. One of the more
humorous recent examples is Booker Prize winner Ian McEwan's detain
ment at the Vancouver airport. We want the Federales to be
strong enough to hunt down Saudi terrorists in flight schools but
sufficiently weak that we can throw them off our own backs when
necessary.

“Those of you who read this site
via RSS/Atom/LiveJournal syndication may have missed our latest site
feature, ‘IM to a friend’.
As of this last
Friday, there's a tiny AIM icon next to the title of each entry. When
it's clicked on, most AIM clients should give you a new message window
containing the URL of the entry you'd like to share with a friend.
After you enter their screen name and send the message, feel free to
chat about what you've sent their way. It works transparently and is
loads easier than a standard copy and paste.
Yeah, we're
trying to harbor conversation about our site and drive our traffic up.
We're also trying to make sending URLs to friends a bit easier. We
stole the idea from our friends at blogging.la
.
Note: Trillian
doesn't seem to install handlers for ‘aim:‘ links. If you
run Trillian and click on the link, there's a good chance that nothing
will happen. iChat and the official AIM client seem to be all good
tho. Sorry Trillian users.” [Preshrunk]

a spam kind of day
a spam kind of day
01/06/2004 08:03 AMFeeling better today. For some reason I'm having trouble at the
moment reaching several sites on the Internet. Unclear if this is a
widespread problem, or just one of my provider. Plus, as if mail spam
was not enough, this morning I woke up to a barrage of spam comments
posted on this weblog, more than sixty in total. I've been deleting
them for the last hour (halfway through now) since movable type
doesn't have (that I know of) a "master" comment list where I can
delete all at once and rebuild all the entries in a single clikc.
Plus, it's slow to rebuild on this machine (which means that posting
all those comments must have taken a good time). Nothing wrecks
workflow like having to deal with enormous amounts of spam. As I'm
deleting comments I'm also closing comment threads to prevent more
spam postings. Sigh.

Speaking of safety, here is a gadget that offers safety of a more
enjoyable kind for
callous geeks like me looking for a good place to rest our wrists

They should offer versions for those who prefer to rest their wrist
on a male chest.
I'll provide a mold of my chest for a reasonable fee. While
my chest is not
as good looking as Brad Pitts', I think I have more professional
looking nipples.
Besides, I am in
ternationally
respected where Brad is only internationally ogled.
Design quality-wise, I give the left one a B but the right one gets
a C because the
gel bumps are not symmetric. More advanced design could allow
a picture to be
'slipped-in' like those promotional mousepads and control buttons
to inflate the gel bumps.
BTW, I see no obvious security vulnerabilities in these products.

I was born and raised in Chi-town Il. Here's a few highlights:
- Watertower = on Michigan Ave.
- Navy Pier = at Navy Pier
- Michigan Ave = the Miracle Mile
- Home of the Blues = Checkboard Lounge
- Ribs = Robinson's
- Italian Beef = Al's Beef (on Harrison, out by U of IL, Chicago
Circle campus)
- City Beaches = North Beach
- Zoo = Lincoln Park Zoo
- Museum = the Art Institute of Chicago (I went to school there)
- Grant Park = symphony
- Museum of Natural History = dinosaurs
That aught to keep you bust. I HIGHLY suggest an Al's Beef, hot
peppers - with provolone.
Oh yah during the summer, there's KILLER Italian Ice right across

Glitch Locks Out Money Users
07/29/2004 11:58 PMIt's the end of the month--bill-paying time--and some Money 2004 users
are wishing they'd kept their cash in an old mattress instead of
relying on Microsoft's financial software. A snafu with a couple of
Microsoft servers has frozen users' access to their own financial
data, even though the encrypted files are on the hard drives of their
own PCs.
Microsoft officials acknowledge the ongoing problem, which began
Monday, and say they hope to have it fixed by midday Friday.
Meanwhile, unable to view their budgets or pay their bills, many
affected users are livid.
Angry Customers
"Clearly they screwed this up and have cost all of us time, and
money!" says one user's post on Microsoft's Money Community
Newsgroup.
Kenneth T. Van Wie, II, a computer consultant in Atlanta, agrees.
"It is unacceptable that this could happen," he says.
"While I have been inconvenienced by not being able to access my
financial records, what about the small business that use this program
for their day-to-day financial operations?"

In reality, camel spiders aren't some
mysterious Arabian creature -- we have them in the United States and
in Mexico, where they are called matevenados. They are slightly
smaller than the human hand, and while they do run quickly, their top
speed is 10 miles per hour, not 25. But they also make no noise, they
excrete no venom, and although they can be voracious nocturnal
predators, they don't eat camels. They eat delicious crickets and
