Introducing "Cooperative Linux" - Linux
for Windows, No Less
04/12/2004 02:06 PMA month ago, a trial version of a little-known Linux application
called "CoLinux" was released that is the first working free and open
source method for optimally running Linux on Microsoft Windows
natively. It's the work of a 21 year-old Israeli computer science
student and some Japanese open source programmers; in Israel, analysts
are already saying it could help transform the software world.
Windows takes on multiple roles
Windows takes on multiple roles
07/22/2004 11:08 AMAs IT Week revealed recently, Microsoft is working to make Windows run
Linux software, and not before time. Windows and Linux would be much
more useful platforms if they could each run software originally
written for the other.
Now let's talk about Longhorn. Longhorn is the codename for the next
version of Windows, currently slated for delivery in 2008. Though
Microsoft has mentioned the possibility of a 3D graphical user
interface, and a new database-like file-system, it has actually made
no promises about what will be included in Longhorn. Many people note
that 2008 is so far away that without an excellent crystal ball,
nobody could predict what the update will contain. But one thing I
reckon for certain about Longhorn is that it will be able to run Linux
software.

In Brief: Microsoft takes Windows XP
Starter Edition to Brazil
04/12/2005 10:53 AMMicrosoft on Wednesday plans to announce it will offer a simplified
and lower-priced version of Windows XP in Brazil. Microsoft already
said it will offer the product in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia,
Russia, and India. The software is not sold in boxed versions, but
installed on cheap PCs designed for first time PC users. Windows XP
Starter Edition is part of Microsoft's efforts to take on the growing
threat of Linux and piracy, which is common in developing markets. The
limited, cheaper version offers localized support and customization
options, preconfigured settings, and simplified task management. The
starter OS lacks support for advanced features such as home
networking, sharing printers across a network, or the ability to
establish multiple user accounts on a single PC. It also limits the
number of applications that can run at a time to three. Analysts at
Gartner have dismissed it, saying it fails to meet the most basic
needs of users. Brazil is one of the countries where open source has
been getting traction, with the government promoting Linux products.
Microsoft did not say when the Brazilian version of Windows XP Starter
Edition will be available.
