The Mischievous Art of Jim Flora --

The Mischievous Art of Jim Flora --
upcoming book

Mark Frauenfelder:
I'm waiting to get my copy of "
The Mischievous Art of Jim Flora," a new book coming out
from Fantagraphics. Flora was a record album cover illustrator in the
1940s and 1950s. I discovered him about 15 years ago when I bought
a Benny Goodman record
with a Flora cover at a garage sale for $1. Finding this
illustration reconfigured my brain.
Here's a good description of Flora's style (from the back cover of
the book):
Vintage music
buffs have long been bedazzled by bizarre, cartoonish album covers
tagged with the signature "Flora." In the 1940s and '50s, James (Jim)
Flora designed dozens of diabolic cover illustrations, many for
Columbia and RCA Victor jazz artists. His designs pulsed with angular
hepcats bearing funnel-tapered noses and shark-fin chins, who fingered
cockeyed pianos and honked lollipop-hued horns. In the background,
geometric doo-dads floated willy-nilly like a kindergarten toy room
gone anti-gravitational. He wreaked havoc with the laws of physics,
conjuring up flying musicians, levitating instruments, and wobbly
dimensional perspectives. Yet Flora's wondrous, childlike exuberance
was subverted by a sinister tinge of the grotesque. As Flora confessed
in a 1998 interview, "I got away with murder, didn't
I?"
There's a nice
Flora art
gallery online, which is maintained by Irwin Chusid, who compiled
the book for Fantagraphics.
Fantagraphics also published a
book by one of my other main influences, Gene Deitch, called The Cat on a Hot Thin Groove. He did the covers for a jazz
fanzine in the 1940s, called The Record Changer. In the '60s, Deitch
was the art director for UPA, the cartoon studio that produced Gerald
McBoingBoing. ABout 10 years ago I had the pleasure of visiting Deitch
in his San Francisco home (He lives most of the year in Prague). He
drew a great picture of his jazz character, The Cat, for me and
presented it to me. I interviewed him for the print edition of bOING
bOING, but I never got around to transcribing the tape. I hope I still
have it.
One of my other big influences,
Disney Artist Mary Blair, got her own book this year too! (Illustrator Bob Staake has a couple of
pages with Blair's art.)
Now, all I need to round out my library of illustrator-gods are
books about the work of Tom Oreb and Ed
Benedict.

Comic Book Gallery Update: Battle For
Theed
06/14/2004 12:48 AMHow cool is this? Last month, I updated our
Comic Book Cover
Gallery with scans of the 2000 Wizards of the Coast sneak preview
comic, "The Battle For Theed" by Michael Stackpole and Daniel
Veesenmeyer. This comic served as an introduction to the
Invasion of
Theed role-playing game. When I posted the original story, I
mentioned that I didn't yet have this particular comic for my own
collection (the original scans came from one of our old news reports.)
Well, I was soon contacted by Daniel Veesenmeyer himself, who not only
hooked me up with a copy of the comic, but he even autographed it for
me! A new scan of the cover is above, and I've added it to our gallery
for
The
Phantom Menace, when the game takes place. Just goes to show
how the Force brings us together.

Any Upcoming Robot Movie News?
Any Upcoming Robot Movie News?
12/29/2003 11:53 PMTonight we went and saw Elf. The kids loved it, but there wasn't any
Jesus came as a baby to bring Salvation message in it *cough*the real
meaning of
Christmas*cough* so I didn't care
for the movie as much as they did. Well anyway, while on the way out
of the theatre I saw a poster for the
new IRobot movie. I know that this isn't earthshattering news, but
hey, the IRobot movie
now has its own website according to the poster. Actually, the
website has
probably been around a while but, well, I finally just noticed it, so
I thought I'd
share. Looking at the website, I wonder if they're trying to do some
sor of weird before the movie stuff like the AI movie did? Like what
does it really mean when they say, "What are you going to do with
yours?" Also, In other movie news, now that Arnold Swartzenegger is
now gov of CA anyone want to take a guess as to whether the remake of
WestWorld is still a go? I'm guessing
probably not but one can still have some elf holiday spirit hope,
can't they?
