Bombing ... The Closet ??? You have to love Google News. You just plain have to: Aker's West Texas home was hit by a dummy bomb accidentally dropped from an Air Force F-177A Nighthawk on a practice run from Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico. Although the dummy didn't contain explosives, it pierced the roof of Aker's home, flew across a bathroom and slammed through a wall into a closet. Aker was in her home with her two children when the bomb hit. Her daughter was at her side, but her son was in his bedroom. All three were unharmed. [_Go_]

Skeletons in the closet

Skeletons in the closet 10/31/2003 05:15 PM
Police find skeleton in Oddfellows lodge. Turns out, they'd already found it, 6 years before (your guess is as good as mine why no one did anything then). Even more interesting, it's not the only one that's been found and subsequently investigated by the police around the country. Makes you wonder about those Oddfellows.

Deep in the Closet

Deep in the Closet 03/14/2005 05:38 PM
I am proud to be an American. Having said that, there is a lot about my country I am also ashamed of. Perhaps a shining example of that shame would be one Senator Rick Santorum. That a shitstain like this could ever hold public office as high as he does is a travesty that does not reflect well on my country. Now, before you object to me calling the eminent gentleman a shitstain, well, I must inform you that I am being completely accurate in my choice of words according to the very serious, very scholarly, very staid American Dialect Society. I am, of course, referring to the literal definition of the word santorum. The ADS announced that this new word and its definition was one of its 2004 Words of the Year. Now, how this word came to be derived from the self-stated beliefs and political actions of the Senator himself segues nicely into a psychological point I want to make about flamingly homophobic men like Senator Rick Santorum. I firmly believe that some of the most ardent anti-homosexual proponents in this world are actually deeply closeted homosexuals themselves. So, plug your nose and let us toss the psychosexual and psychopolitical Santorum salad.

Windows out of the closet

Windows out of the closet 12/30/2003 06:27 PM
So I pulled my Windows machine out of the closet the other day and hooked it up to the net and a monitor and all that—I wanted to try out some Windows aggregators, see what features they have, see how they’re solving some UI problems, etc.

And I had some stunningly bad luck. Almost every single app I tried crashed on launch or right after displaying their main window.

My machine is a 500 MHz Dell box running Windows 98. It’s up-to-date with security patches, and it has .NET 1.1 installed. But... apparently it’s a bit too stone age. Fair enough: I’m not complaining, just learning a lesson.

Anyway... of the aggregators I did get to work, I was struck by how Windows-y they are. Wizards for adding subscriptions!

That’s not a criticism, by the way. Windows apps should have wizards, they should be Windows-y, just like Mac apps should be Mac-like. (And Linux apps should be... GNOME-y? KDE-ish?)

This experience was a reminder for me of how unimportant the underlying syndication formats are, in a way. What percent of time does an aggregator developer spend on RSS and Atom parsing code? 50%? 25%? 10%?

I figure it’s somewhere less than 1%.

The rest of the time is taken up with things like data storage, networking, and user interface. But mostly user interface. Not just implementing—which is often easy—but designing user interface, which is difficult.

What this means, finally, is that a Windows aggregator developer is foremost a Windows developer, and secondly an RSS/Atom developer. Similarly for Mac and Linux developers.

I haven't tried it, but this sounds great. The Toilet Tank Traffic Shaper - DUMMYNET rocks. Is there something similar for PF? For Linux? In vaguely related news I haven't had time to setup the Soekris box yet. My excuse is that I need to either work with OpenBSD or wait for FreeBSD to import the if_bridge code into 5.x to make it work well as a bridge. There's a patch for the if_bridge thing, but I couldn't get it...

Monster App

Monster App 12/17/2004 06:43 PM

I love these new "timed team event" shows like Monster Garage, Monster House, and Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. In these shows, a team has to build or convert something in a set time limit, usually five days. There's usually a lot of drama, yelling, and screaming, but they invariably end up with something beautiful at the end that just blows everyone away.

Why not Monster App? Pick a charity organization that needs a new Web site. We could start the show by sitting at the old Web site and laughing at how inept it is. Then we'd get to work.

We'd have five days to build a complete new Web site incorporating all their requirements (which wouldn't be allowed to change — ha!). I can see the late nights, the frayed nerves, the screaming matches when the app starts throwing parse errors 10 minutes before the red countdown clock reaches zero...just before we unveil a cool new Web site that just makes everyone realize how wicked awesome we all are.

I think you could make a show out of this. I'd watch it.
