The Dot Com Freebie That Paid Off... For
The Few Who Remembered
06/02/2004 10:10 AM
In 1998 you couldn't open a browser window without finding some sort of ridiculous "free" dot com promotion - and one of the most ridiculous was a company named TravelZoo that picked up on the fact that everyone was drooling over stock options in companies, and decided to offer "free stock" in the company to anyone who signed up to use their service. It got them a ton of hype, and for about everyone was talking about them. Then, most people forgot about them - even many who signed up to get that free stock. It turns out that maybe they should have paid more attention. That free TravelZoo stock is now actually worth something - but it's too late to redeem your shares if you didn't already re-register the stock when the company moved their shares to the Nasdaq (something most people didn't do). Of course, you have to wonder why the company only seems to be so vocal about this after the date is now passed.

On dimly remembered books from
childhood...
11/14/2003 07:31 PM

Did anyone read a book when they were a kid that had two teenagers running through a forest, touching a piece of ball lightning and being transported to Ancient Rome? I remember one bit distinctly - the two boys being surprised when they realise they're in Rome because where they come from it's called "Reme" after the brother Remus rather than Romulus. I'm only asking because I stumbled upon a post on Fiona's site which suggested using Amazon to find the name of dimly-remembered books. Only I can't find it. If no one has any idea, could you someone please pop into Wroxham library and see if it's still in the kids book section after twenty years. Thanks!

Michael Geist is a professor at University of Ottowa. He's certainly one the most prolific and effective advocates for all things good. Among the million things he does is write a weekly column for the Toronto Star. That writing, along with his other work, has angered those with whom he disagrees. Of course, I know well what it's like to be, let's say, not liked. But I've been astonished by the means deployed by our friends in the North for dealing with people they don't like. So too have I been amazed at the rhetoric. Check out Michael's post, Groundhog Day to get a flavor. I guess this is as good a measure as any of effectiveness. Bravo, Michael.

Valiant Comics are Back! After a brief surge in popularity and value at the start of 1991, Valiant comics soon died during the great comic crash of the mid nineties. Now it seems that valiant comics are worth their weight in gold with comics worth only a few dollars (or less) a few years ago, now bringing in 200 dollars. Is this surge in price a sign of a new comic book crash or are collectors finally finding value in Turock and Man-O-War?

Malla Hukkanen

I noticed a poster for a photo exhibit in a camera shop window and decided to go have a look since the theme was interesting. Valkok ankaan Sankarit, Heroes of the Screen, is a provocative collection of photographs by Malla Hukkanen taken around Finland of tiny movie theatres that are quickly becoming a thing of the past. Hukkanen tells the story of these indie theatres in vivid colour on 35mm and panoramic film. I took my time looking at the faces of the people he captured so poignantly in and around their theatres and wondered if they were still in business. I'd love to see more of his work.

I have never really liked the giant 20 screen megaplex theatres that are so common in the US nowadays as they often show the same movies for weeks on end, have stale popcorn and they're as large and impersonal as a shopping mall. The small independent theatres have fresh popcorn, interesting films and often a small staff who remember your name if you're a movie junkie. It's ironic how the people who evangelise how the internet and social software are "revolutionising" our social lives when, at every turn, nearly every part of our daily lives away from the computer are becoming more and more impersonal and isolated. Hukkanen's photos will likely be a testament to the future of a time when people went to see movies and each other without the aid of a computer.

The Living Picture Museum [Elävän Kuvan Museo] is hidden away in a small warehouse in an out of the way neighbourhood, but it has an impressive collection of projection cameras and movie theatre ephemera, including an ushers costume from Kinopalatsi last worn in the last 1960s. It's a short walk from the Sörnäinen metro station and it's worth the trip if you wax nostalgic over old movie theatres or enjoy photography that tells a story.
