Steven Johnson's coming to town! 03/06/2004 01:49 AM

Celebrated author Steven Johnson is coming to the San Francisco Bay area this week! He's doing a couple of appearances -- Stacy's in town tomorrow (Monday) at 12:30, and Keppler's in Menlo Park on Tuesday at 7:30. For those of you who have been living under a rock, Johnson wrote Mind Wide Open, Interface Culture, and Emergence, along with loads of Magazine and Newspaper articles, inclusing one on Technor ati's Breaking News service for Discover Magazine. Steven has a total knack for explaining and describing complicated science and theory in simple terms, while never losing the beauty and art of the idea or technology in the metaphor. I'll be doing everything I can to make it over to Stecey's for lunch...

Around Town: Applelinks

Around Town: Applelinks 12/19/2004 02:51 PM
Applelinks is a Macintosh portal site that covers the news and adds its own opinions, "giving it more flavor and personality." "We feel it's the Mac community that makes us important. We don't see ourselves as a stopping point for Mac users, but as a channel to other Mac sites," Kirk Hiner, senior editor of Applelinks told Spymac. "Our news coverage, reviews, feature columns and even how-tos and such all take this approach: 'Here's what we think, and here's where you can go to determine if you agree or disagree.' This exposes our readers to the wealth of knowledge and opinions within the Mac community, and hopefully increases the readership of the other sites." Applelinks is on Spymac's list of sites in the Around Town Tracker (that can be found on the right side of Spymac). To add Applelinks to your tracking list go to "Options" in the top right corner and then click on the button beside "News Tracks." You'll then be able to select Applelinks by checking the box next to the name (don't forget to press "Submit" after you've checked the box!).

My kind of town.....

My kind of town..... 07/11/2004 10:47 AM

David Weinberger asks....

My wife and I are taking 3 days of vacation in Chicago, starting tomorrow. I've been there many times on business, which means I'm very familiar with the airport and am fully qualified to operate the remote in the hotel rooms, and my wife hasn't been there in 30 years or so.

So, we're going to do the tourist thing. Outside of the obvious, any recommendations? (Three notes: Second City is closed the days we're there, we don't eat meat and we don't much care for the blues.)

[Joho the blog]

I was born and raised in Chi-town Il. Here's a few highlights:
- Watertower = on Michigan Ave.
- Navy Pier = at Navy Pier
- Michigan Ave = the Miracle Mile
- Home of the Blues = Checkboard Lounge
- Ribs = Robinson's
- Italian Beef = Al's Beef (on Harrison, out by U of IL, Chicago Circle campus)
- City Beaches = North Beach
- Zoo = Lincoln Park Zoo
- Museum = the Art Institute of Chicago (I went to school there)
- Grant Park = symphony
- Museum of Natural History = dinosaurs

That aught to keep you bust. I HIGHLY suggest an Al's Beef, hot peppers - with provolone.

Oh yah during the summer, there's KILLER Italian Ice right across the street from Al's - on Harrison. Over 30 flavors - totally uniqiue - like nothing you've had before (even in Venice when you went to dinner with Paolo.)

But Chicago doesn't have black squid ink.

And Maxwell St. is gone.....

And the steel mills.

:-(

Hey here's some research for you! Find out who Cap Streeter is and why it's called Streeterville. He was an early revolutionary who declared a seperate state - maybe it was even a seperate country.

Thne research Mayor Daley and bow your head and pray to the history of poltiics in America. Without Mayor Daley we wouldn't have - Mayor Daley, nepotism and George W.

Oh yah and look up the Chagall Mosaic at 1st National Bank. I videotaped teh unveiling - in 1972. My first editing project.

Dutch Town Gets Wi-Fi

Dutch Town Gets Wi-Fi 12/02/2003 02:31 PM
WinQ, a European WISP, has been working on a city-wide Wi-Fi zone in Kenniswijk Eindhoven in the Netherlands since July. The network uses Proxim APs and the Nomadix Universal Subscriber Gateway which enables customer acquisition and service provisioning. The city center, cafes, hotels and the railway station are already connected. The city council uses the network to broadcast live city council meetings over the Web. The city and WinQ are looking at the project as an experiment to see how people will use the network. It's a great idea to use a wireless network to allow people to be more involved in city government. These large Wi-Fi networks will be used more with useful applications like the city council broadcasts. The announcement isn't online yet but should be up here eventually....

Jane Austen, Bloggist

Jane Austen, Bloggist 10/28/2003 11:06 PM
It occurred that Jane Austen is quite the bloggist. She weaves a complex tapestry of individual voices and experiences, the vast majority of which holds little interest for most, but those taken with her characters' experiences can't help but wonder what they are up to today. Some are constant companions, others meander in from time to time only when their experience somehow interacts with those Austen has chosen to follow.

I find she seldom provides much in the way of description as an editor, leaving much to the individual experience, interpretation, and voice of her characters. Take, for example, this passage from Mansfield Park in which a betrothed Miss Bertram narrates the approach to her Sotherton-to-be:

Here begins the village. Those cottages are really a disgrace. The church spire is reckoned remarkably handsome. I am glad the church is not so close to the great house as often happens in old places. The annoyance of the bells must be terrible. There is the parsonage: a tidy-looking house, and I understand the clergyman and his wife are very decent people. Those are almshouses, built by some of the family. To the right is the steward's house; he is a very respectable man. Now we are coming to the lodge-gates; but we have nearly a mile through the park still. It is not ugly, you see, at this end; there is some fine timber, but the situation of the house is dreadful. We go down hill to it for half a mile, and it is a pity, for it would not be an ill-looking place if it had a better approach."

Miss Crawford [her cousin, of sorts] was not slow to admire; she pretty well guessed Miss Bertram's feelings, and made it a point of honour to promote her enjoyment to the utmost. Mrs. Norris [her aunt] was all delight and volubility; and even Fanny [our heroine] had something to say in admiration, and might be heard with complacency. Her eye was eagerly taking in everything within her reach; and after being at some pains to get a view of the house, and observing that "it was a sort of building which she could not look at but with respect."

Mansfield Park, a heavier Austen that it is, has been a wonderful escape during these busy weeks of mostly online experience.
When Jane Austen's novels were published, some readers dismissed them as "too natural to be interesting." Yet their very true-to-lifeness helped earn Austen (1775-1817) her place in the literary canon. Nearly 200 years later, many praise what Austen scholar (and obvious fan) Le Faye calls her ability to create the "sensation that we are visiting genuine places and joining in the lives of genuine people." --Publishers Weekly on Deirdre Le Faye's Jane Austen: The World of Her Novels.
