I'm a bl0gger

I'm a bl0gger 01/23/2004 12:09 AM

Everyone in Davos is a CEO or some other fairly senior title. I've found myself introducing myself at sessions as "a blogger" much/most of the time. ;-) It still amazing me how few people know what blogging is. Calling myself a "blogger" seems to be the fastest way for me to get the "what is a blog" discussion going. ;-)

How to hack Blogger

How to hack Blogger 06/29/2004 05:48 AM
Blogger has published an article on how to hack the service to add greater customization by tweaking its template vocabulary:
For instance, most of our default templates display archive links in a list. But really, the archive tags simply provide the names and URLs of all the archive files, and we can do whatever we want with them. Do you know how to make a pull-down menu in HTML? Think that might be a more efficient format for your three years of daily archives? Great! Move the archive tags out of the list and into a menu.

Blogger meeting 08/27/2004 05:23 PM
Yet again, a horde of drunken Finnish bloggers are gathered together, and they want to greet the world in their own words. So who am I to stop them? Here goes: Finnish bloggers say hi:

Hmmm... Taidan taas ensimmäisenä poistua. Pitää lähteä kuuntelemaan musaa muualle. Uusia kasvoja, uusia blogeja. Ei täältä voi olla poissakaan.... Seuraavalla kerralla lisää. --KatjaW

Iltaan kuului ennenaikaisia siideripullollisia, paikallisen baariolohuoneen pehmeitä sohvia, paljon kasvoiltaan tuntemattomia tuttuja ja tietenkin myös nopeahko Trivial Pruisuit, joka taas osoitti ylivertaisuuteni kyseisessä pelissä. Epäilen myös Kysyn Vaanin saapuneen paikalle oluttuopiksi naamioituneena. Taas. Cheers! -- http://www.visukinttu.com

Jatkan edelleen punaisella juomalla.. päänsärky johtuu savusta. Silti on kivaa nähdä uusia ja vanhoja naamoja. Kuvamateriaali löytyy osoitteesta http://www.minyaweb.net. Terkuin, Minya

Tapasin tänään uuden tuttavuuden, Minyan. Minut saatiin houkuteltua parin tunnin keskustelun jälkeen, tähän mielenkiintoiseen tapaamiseen. Jonkinlaista nettipäiväkirjaa olen pitänyt aikaisemminkin, tosin hieman suppeasta aiheesta...Nyt uskon jo jääneeni koukkuun tähän uuteen yhteisöön ;) (ennen edes nimimerkin rekisteröimistä). Nimimerkiksi taidan valita Rajatapauksen, jonkun paidasta innostuneena. Koen olevani jonkin sortin rajatapaus, selitys löytyy tulevasta päiväkirjastani. Oli tosi kivaa tavatata teidät kaikki, vaikutitte oikein värikkäältä ja mukavalta porukalta. Terveisin, Rajatapaus.

Hang-around-bloggaajien tapaaminen äityi sittenkin suureksi bloggaajamiitiksi, jossa jälleen virtasi vesi ja terveelliset elämän tavat olivat kunniassa. Vatsalihasliikkeitä tehtiin, venyteltiin äänijänteitä ja harjoitimme itseruoskintaa. Aah.

The Educated Blogger: Using Weblogs To Promote Literacy in the Classroom by David Huffaker
http://firstmo nday.org/issues/issue9_6/huffaker/

This paper explores the role of weblogs or "blogs" in classroom settings. Blogs, which resemble personal journals or diaries and provide an online venue where self–expression and creativity is encouraged and online communities are built, provide an excellent opportunity for educators to advance literacy through storytelling and dialogue. This paper explores the importance of literacy and storytelling in learning, and then juxtaposes these concepts with the features of blogs. The paper also reviews examples of blogs in practice.

Jay Rosen reminds us of Norman Mailer's pre-New Journalistic coverage of the 1960 Convention. "[T]here is another way of 'covering' a political convention," Jay writes: "Send a writer and let the writer find a language adequate to the event." A snip: Mailer on Los Angeles, site of the 1960 Democratic convention: "one has the feeling it was built by television sets giving orders to men." In the comments, Seth Finkelstein writes about the Mailer: Much shorter version: "Let in a bunch of freelance writers, maybe they'll write something interesting". Hmm. Let me rephrase that: Let Norman Mailer in and...

The bl0gger who came to dinner 02/06/2005 01:09 AM
If you were going to invite 10 bloggers for dinner, whom would you invite? John, of J-Walk Blog decided to start this new parlor game for bloggers. I tripped across it in the 1/31/05 post on Reality Carnival. It's a pretty good way to find the bloggers that the most fascinating bloggers find most fascinating. (Did that make sense?) The best bloggers define their own personal Best of the Web. [Warning- proceed only if you have several hours to kill!]

Snowballed Blogger

Snowballed Blogger 09/14/2004 02:32 PM

A while back, I noticed that a fresh 'best web development language' war broke out, this time between Java and PHP.  I tuned out when it got ugly but noted that the war got started when a Friendster engineer posted about the Friendster's switch from JSP to PHP along with some throwaway comments that many Java geeks interpreted as insults.

I didn't know that the engineer was Joyce Park (hey, a fellow Korean-American blogger) and that she got fired recently for blogging until I read the Red Herring article (aren't they supposed to be dead?).

The problem here is that most bloggers just don't know realize that they have a powerful tool in their hands that could cause serious damages whether intentional or not.  If Joyce said what she posted to engineers she met in person, all there would be a heated discussion.  But posting the same on her blog created a big wave of controversy among geeks with Friendster as the center piece.

Should companies just shrug when personal activities of their employees affect the company?  If Joyce has really been blogging for the past five years, I think Joyce should have known better.  As to Friendster, they are just guilty of massive stupidity.

RCA Lyra 2850 Revealing (But Tasteful)

06/18/2004 11:33 AM

normal_rca_rd2750_main_01.jpg imageDAPreview entices the new RCA Lyra 2850, a 20GB hard disk player, to give it all up in this huge pictorial spread, even squeezing a little player-on-player action with the milfy first-generation iPod. The sexiest part about the 2850 -- and lets face it, it's sort of a butter face -- is its, uhm, insides, with a browse-by-ID3 tag feature that lets you navigate your library by even semi-obscure ID3 categories like Genre or Year and can even build its own ID3 tag database on the fly -- a first for a standalone player.

Lyra Research’s new report, "Commercial Printing: An Overview of Production and Wide-Format," is essential reading for vendors in the commercial printing market. The report focuses on key trends in commercial printing, including sharp increases in sales of eco-solvent or mild solvent wide-format printers, declining prices for wide-format devices, and inexpensive Chinese wide-format printer products entering the European and U.S. markets. On the narrow-format side, acquisitions by key players have taken center stage. [PRWEB May 18, 2005]

For some people, Internet downloads are never fast enough. If you're one of them, you might be tempted by Speed Download 2.3.4, from YazSoft, which is supposed to accelerate the speed at which files download from the Internet. But in our tests, Speed Download did almost nothing to speed up downloads. And in some instances, files took longer to download with Speed Download than without it. Luckily, the program has other virtues.
