Koranteng Ofosu-Amaah has a fascinating post about how photo upload sites and image editing packages look to someone whose skin is dark and who is shooting in very bright sunlight. This is just an example of a broader theme in the post: "The Subtle Business of Software Localization," as Ethan puts it. Snippets: The first thing I very quickly noticed: somehow all the photos that I uploaded to Yahoo Photos turned out darker than on Flickr (the services both resize uploaded photos). The photo-resizing algorithm used by Yahoo Photos was giving worse results. This was noticeable to me because a...

The book is out now -- I'm looking forward to getting my copy!
The software development world desperately needs better writing. If I have to read another 2000 page book about some class library written by 16 separate people in broken ESL, I’m going to flip out. If I see another hardback book about object oriented models written with dense faux-academic pretentiousness, I’m not going to shelve it any more in the Fog Creek library: it’s going right in the recycle bin. If I have to read another spirited attack on Microsoft’s buggy code by an enthusiastic nine year old Trekkie on Slashdot, I might just poke my eyes out with a sharpened pencil. Stop it, stop it, stop it!

Photo Recognition Software Gives Location By James Randerson

"You are lost in a foreign city, you don't speak the language and you are late for your meeting. What do you do? Take out your cellphone, photograph the nearest building and press send. For a small fee, photo recognition software on a remote server works out precisely where you are, and sends back directions that will get you to your destination. That, at least, is what two researchers at the University of Cambridge in the UK hope their software will one day be used for. Roberto Cipolla and Duncan Robertson have developed a program that can match a photograph of a building to a database of images. ... The software can match two images even when they are taken at a different times of day, from different angles and with clutter such as pedestrians and vehicles in the way. 'That's an easy problem for a human, but it's very difficult for a computer,' says Robertson."

New Photo Enlargement Software Gives
Cell Phone Photos Better Print Results
04/19/2005 02:37 AM
A new technology has just been released called Imagener that enlarges pictures without loss of image quality. Cell phone photos often do not have enough resolution to deliver acceptable printout results. Cell phone cameras tend to make images at 160 pixels per inch, while the acceptable resolution for printing is in the 300 dpi range. Kneson Software (kneson.com) has developed new photo software technology that extends current enlargement techniques to analyze more of the image and give mobile phone photos new life. The new WebCore also supports HTML editing. You can specify editable regions in a page using the contenteditable attribute (which maps to a CSS property behind the scenes, so you can even set that property in your user stylesheets if you want to get crazy). We've also added a selection object so that you can get the current selection, and of course support for execCommand so that you can perform operations on the selection. And yes, so that you can actually tell what you're doing stylistically, getComputedStyle is now also supported.

Editing the documentary

Editing the documentary 02/10/2004 08:08 PM

I've returned from filming in Colombia and now I have 22 tapes (about 16 hours) of video to edit.

The first step is to get an idea of what you have. I fast forwarded through most of the tapes, and used my digital camera to make screenshots of the TV. I then printed out the screenshots (using Windows XP's printing wizard makes it very easy) per scene. I laid out all the scenes to have an easy way of discussing them and getting an overview. Think of it as a high-level sitemap.

videoprints1.jpg

videoprints2.jpg

Next I will have to watch all 16 hours and make a detailed log: at this timestamp, a man with donkey passes. This timestamp, the interviewee talks about X. I expect this to take 2 weeks, I'll report back. And yes, it's like a content inventory. Yey.
