12/09/2003 09:43 PMHere's a look at Panther from another point of view, not so much its
high-flying features, but rather, the subtle refinements that we've
come to expect from Apple products. Here are ten things that won't
make you buy Panther, but you'll appreciate them once you have it. By

03/13/2003 10:14 AMSpent the weekend building a custom ASP.NET server control that
does dynamic data-driven page generation. I'm planning to give
it away publicly, so it needs docs and a setup. I used Ant to build, although NAnt is also a good
choice. It was a breeze to integrate NDoc into the build, and in no
time I had MSDN-style help files being automatically generated.
It took a little longer to decipher the XML format used by msi2xml/xml2msi, but with a
little bit of help from MSDN and Orca (for looking at what other MSIs
do), I have a nicely-branded MSI autogenerate from XML as part of the
build, even installing my assembly into the
GAC.

Today I got the first 65 episodes of Hikaru no Go on DVD.
It's a pretty good series; very dramatic. If we had a hit
song
based on the game chess, why not a hit cartoon based on go?
I also just saw an episode of Rurouni
Kenshin for the first time. It's one of the most
inspiring I've seen in a long while. It looks like another
looming expense.

A Decline in Hobby Electronics?
A Decline in Hobby Electronics?
12/20/2003 07:20 PMMost of us robot old timers grew up reading electronic project books
written by Forrest M.
Mims III. Mims recently wrote
a letter to Mark
David of Electronic Design
magazine, lamenting a declining interest in hobby electronics.
Apparently Radio Shack has pulled all their eletronic project books
from
the shelves due to declining sales. Mark reports that NASA, fearing a
dearth of future engineers, is funding educational programs that are
promoting interest in electronics through robotics.
GPL Programming: A Lucrative Hobby
GPL Programming: A Lucrative Hobby
06/22/2005 01:58 AMAfter completing my first year of college, this summer I would like to
make some money. I have worked low paying summer jobs like most
people have, but this summer I can do better than that. I can
set my own hours, do enjoyable work, and make more money than I would
at the grocery store. Programming has been a hobby of mine for years.
And since it was just a hobby, I've always released my work
under the GNU General Public License (GPL) so I would get more users
and more feedback. The obvious way to get paid from programming
would be to sell your software. But, that is not always the best
way to make money. Creating open source software can be more
lucrative and I'm going to show you how to do it.

An old note from my journalist course

An old note from my journalist course
days...
12/17/2004 06:42 PM
So years ago I did a journalism course and one of the early lessons
in news reporting was just an exercise in trying to collectively
define news. It was a pretty heavily-directed effort, and I think it
had to be, because like many other things that we're so used to in our
everyday lives, it's weirdly difficult to explain to people. Anyway,
I'm cleaning up my flat and I find the definition that we came up
with on a piece of notepaper, and I'm looking at it and I'm thinking:
"This is actually quite interesting - and possibly quite useful for
people who are setting up subject-based weblogs". So here it is:
"New information of significance, interest or relevance
which affects the lives or interests of a particular group of readers
/ listeners / viewers"
It's not perfect by any means, but it gives you some places to
start when you're thinking about what to write. Know your audience,
make sure you're giving them information, and make sure that the
information is actually going to matter to them. It's not exactly
revelatory information, but I figured someone out there might find it
useful. And now I've transcribed it onto the net, it means that I can
throw away the piece of paper!
