Computing Supply and Demand

Computing Supply and Demand 10/28/2003 11:07 PM

I was impressed with this interview with Greg Papadopoulos, Sun Microsystem's new CTO.  First comment that caught my attention was when he said, "I think the biggest piece of crap going around right now is that this is a mature industry and innovation doesn't matter."  He goes on at length about how improvements in computing efficiency impact the cost equation: "You have this exponential improvement in computing, but ERP is not getting exponentially complex. So you would certainly expect it to get cheaper. If you went to a CFO and said, "I can give you a million times more computing power," they would say, "OK, I'm not going to close my books every millisecond, so you are going to give it to me at a millionth of the cost." But if you go to an R&D department or to Wall Street, they will say, "Please, bring it on." I think we can actually free-up dollars from other parts of the business. They would definitely see a competitive return doing better simulation of product development, for instance."

That's exactly how I see it, too.  People are crazy if they think software is played out.  He also has some interesting things to say about "utility computing", web services, and outsourcing.

A Hard Lesson Learned

A Hard Lesson Learned 03/14/2005 04:35 PM

Well the nightmare that all of us geeks feared the most, happened this morning. I walked into my office and found that it had been broken into. The computers were all taken and the printers, copier and some accessories were also stolen. I had backups of the important files, but a lot of small things are missing, settings, ftp accounts, and the most important thing of all, my privacy.

It will be a couple days before the insurance settles the claim and we can replace the hardware and software, but my worry is that I had passwords and account information available for any trained hacker to find. Sure I had the passwords and I did not save key rings in browsers, but the fact is, it can be found out. I learned a hard lesson. I will be encrypting my hard drive from this time forward. My data will be secure, I will have a call home program installed in case the thieves fire up the system and try to get online.

I would like to here from the geeks out there as to what measures I need to take to make sure that my information is as safe as I can keep it. Let's hear your feedback. I'll be back with more news as soon as I get my computers back at the office.

PHP Lesson: is_int() vs. is_numeric()

PHP Lesson: is_int() vs. is_numeric() 02/10/2004 02:49 AM
Note to anyone else who might do the dumb thing I did. When you're handling GET/POST input in PHP and wan to know if a value is numeric, don't use is_int() because it'll lie to you. What you want is is_numeric(). Of course, the is_int() documentation specifically warns you about this, but it doesn't do much good if you read right past it. I was *this* close to walking over to Rasmus or Andrei and asking for a sanity check,...

A lesson in upgrading hardware

A lesson in upgrading hardware 06/17/2004 05:02 AM
The other day, I got a note from a longtime reader (I won't reveal their name as it might be embarrassing for them) about a hardware upgrade to a NetWare server. In a large network, with many servers, this is a fairly straightforward task. But in a single-server network, such as a small business network, the process can be fraught with danger.

Presidents' Day lesson: the mayor's duty 02/16/2004 10:44 AM
The Mayor of San Francisco has decided that a state law is unconstitutional under the state constitution, and has therefore ordered city clerks to disobey the law and obey the constitution. This troubles my friend Dan Gillmor, who on last count was right about everything else. And it is an action by a mayor, who on last count was wrong about a bunch of very important things. So who's right now? I try to answer that in the extended essay that follows.
