Maxtor has a new version of their external hard disk and backup solution, the OneTouch II. Available in 250GB or 300GB versions (7200RPM, 16MB cache, FireWire, USB 2.0), the new drives will come bundled with Dantz Retrospect backup software that should allow you to retain a series of incremental backups with history, so that if you'd like to retrieve an older version of a document - like say from a couple weeks back - you can pull up the older version even if you've made multiple changes. As the drive fills up, it will start axing older versions to free up space.

There's also a DriveLock feature which password protects the contents of the drive if it is powered down, but it's not clear if this could just be defeated by removing the drive itself from the chassis or if all the data is saved in an encrypted form at all times (I suspect the former).

I had a bad file on my Maxtor OneTouch drive so I ran XP's error correction tool on the drive.  But since then the laptop to which I usually connect the drive slowed down drastically to a point where the laptop was rendered useless and a source of noise as well (it's two fans were on all the time).

Typical solutions on XP slowdown didn't fix the problem but, when pulled the drive as well as the USB adapter (the laptop came with only USB 1.0 support) and rebooted, the problem disappeared.  Reconnecting the drive made the problem appear again.  Since there wasn't any process that was causing the CPU load, I think it was something related to the drive at the driver level.

Now the drive is connected to my desktop and seems to be working just fine.  I'll just have to remember not do check the drive for errors.  Backup storage you can't check for errors makes no sense but 250G is 250G.

The massive <b>250GB DiamondMax 10</b>. As large hard drives are becoming of an increased importance, we will also cover a small guide so you know what to look for when buying a new hard drive.
<ul>After plugging everything in, the drive was visible to my onboard Promise RAID/SATA Interface controller&#8217;s BIOS. In here, you can setup the &#8220;bootability&#8221; of drives and decide whether you want your hard drives to work in a RAID environment or simply to work alone; I decided to skip the RAID options and work alone. Maxtor offer a setup of tools to help you format the drive; MaxBlast, a piece of hard drive management software for Windows by Maxtor, for Maxtor drives.

The first thing you may notice, or not, is the noise level of the hard drive while in operation &#8211; it is, to say the least, very quiet. I found noise only noticeable whilst doing sustained file transfers between itself and my DiamondMax 9. I felt the drive was probably about twice as quiet as the DiamondMax 9; serious credit to Maxtor&#8217;s &#8220;Quiet Drive&#8221; technology, the Fluid Dynamic Bearings, and the fact that the spindle runs at 7,200 RPM (Western Digital has a line of hard drives running at a noisy 10K RPM).</ul>

Oops, I almost forgot about these new cameras announced from JVC - the ones they've been hyping up to no end as their big "mystery product." Basically, they're camcorders with hard drives in them - a 4GB microdrive, to be exact. They look pretty cool and everything, but they're really most interesting because they are the first consumer camcorder with a built-in hard drive, not because they do anything particularly unique. That being said, I fully support this idea, and think most consumer recording technology should move to hard drives as soon as possible (I'll be waiting until you can get something with a bigger hard drive than 4GB for less than $1,500, though).

Both models (the GZ-MC100 and the GZ-MC200) can record up to 9Mbps in MPEG2, though, which is DVD quality.

You know it's likely to be a slow news day when the first thing you turn up is, basically, an ode to the unsung hard drive. Hard drives are, admittedly, a fairly unsexy business. Then again, you might think the same thing about semiconductors - and they seem to get plenty of attention. Either way, storage is very important to consumers - as the article notes in looking at how quickly people focus on the size of their iPod hard drives or just how much space their Gmail account really has. Even the leading people in the storage business are quite colorful and certainly unique, which should get them much more attention. However, when it's all said and done, no matter how important your hard drive is (just think how people react when their hard drives die), and no matter how quickly they improve in just how much data they can hold, not too many people find themselves particularly interested in the "boring" hard drive business.
