A Desktop That Will End The Desktop Wars

A Desktop That Will End The Desktop Wars 01/19/2004 01:46 AM
The problem why there are so many battles and wars on the desktop is primarily due to lack of standards. Most of the desktop models rolled-out nowadays contain vendor specific implementation that is usable within the vendor definition. As a result, no interconnection between dissimilar environments (brandwise) exists. One can see some interfaces that work while others are only available on one, missing on another.

Keep Your Desktop in Your Pocket

"If you’re really hardcore about traveling light, you might want to become the ultimate road warrior and dispense with your laptop or PDA altogether and get M-System’s Xkey 2.0, a USB key drive with a 32-bit processor inside it that lets you run programs right off of it. The idea is to have everything you need for work (email, databases, Java applets) stored on the portable drive, and then you can just plug it into any PC you can find (maybe hotels could even offer loaner laptops to business travelers), and you have a fully functional workstation, exactly like the one you use at work. Even better than that? Unplug it from the PC and it leaves no traces of your work behind — the Xkey 2.0 even removes web browser cookies and all temporary files." [Engadget]

Can you imagine the look on librarians' faces when patrons start bringing in devices like these and expect to be able to plug them into our public access computers?

Linux on the desktop at IBM 11/15/2003 07:50 PM

Spotted on Slashdot, IBM's Open Source Desktop - Directions for today... and Tomorrow presentation includes one slide that really caught my attention:

To continue our own journey to becoming an on demand business, IBM expects to migrate our internal desktop environment, where appropriate, to open standards based on the Linux platform.

Of course, depending on how they define "appropriate" this could be a lot less exciting than it looks. Still, it's a pretty huge boost for the Linux desktop movement.

Google On Your Desktop

Google On Your Desktop 05/24/2004 02:27 PM
Last week we posted about Google's desktop search tool (codenamed Puffin), and here come the stories on how the move pits Google against Microsoft. While that might not be too far from the truth, the article's suggestion of a Google-Lindows partnership to take on Microsoft seems a bit of a stretch. But what about a Google-branded (GMozilla?) browser? It wouldn't be surprising if there's a Google employee spending his 20% "free" time on making a Google browser that is Google-ad-friendly. (The press would go crazy over that, as would the privacy freaks.) Competing directly with Microsoft will probably bring a lot of headaches for Google. So maybe the best way to compete with Microsoft is to ignore them and simply continue to produce useful products.

Ventana Scroll Lamp

Ventana Scroll Lamp 08/16/2004 08:06 AM

ventana_lamp.jpg imageSomebody needs to steal the concept of the Ventana scroll lamp and manufacturer a cut-rate version for less than the $700 the original goes for, because I would like to place dozens of them in my apartment for various uses, such as lighting up things, looking at, and swinging them out 180° on their mounts and saying "huh," and "would you look at that?" As it stands, though, a couple of halogen bulbs and a roll of space toilet paper isn't going to pry the better part of a grand out of my pocket.

The Ventana isn't the only lamp Pablo Designs has, either, and I found many of them to be pretty nifty.

Tec USB Hub Wheel, Fan

Tec USB Hub Wheel, Fan 03/29/2005 04:22 AM

usb_hub.jpg imageContinuing with the Tec product announcements, the company has also introduced the "USB Hub Wheel W" and "USB Senpuuki Mist W." The USB Hub Wheel W brings a somewhat innovative development to the USB hub market by equipping the hub with a "wheel" mechanism; the cable that connects to the PC (or Mac) can be wound up inside the housing like a garden hose.

Finally, we have the "USB Senpuuki Mist W." "Senpuuki" is Japanese for "fan" (as in, "electric fan"), so I don't think this product needs a whole lot of explaining. At the center of the fan assembly is a logo plate that contains a light, so something like could be used for long summer nights in front of the boob tube (or LCD).
