Biggest security threat is vocabulary? 04/06/2005 03:43 PM
Phishing, Trojan horse, wardialer... all terms that many Ars readers take for granted. But a new study shows that for most people, such words are just so much unintelligible jargon. Does that translate into a security problem?

Jargon: The Biggest Computer Security
Threat

Jargon: The Biggest Computer Security
Threat
04/04/2005 01:54 PM
If you're online these days, computer security problems come in all sorts of flavors including viruses, worms, phishing, trojans, zombies, spyware, malware, adware, DDoS, spam, spim, spit, buffer overflows and many others... and, of course, most people have no clue what most of those mean -- which leads them to (a) freaking out about the insecurity of using computers while (b) having no idea how to really protect themselves. While some may question this particular study, it does make a good point that a lot of the jargon used to describe security threats can sometimes be more confusing for non-techie computer users. What this means, though, is that many less savvy users are simply going to expect their ISP to keep them secure, which may be quite a challenge for ISPs who aren't prepared for that sort of thing.

The biggest bully

The biggest bully 03/11/2003 01:59 PM
Maureen Dowd, whose writing I generally despise, has partially redeemed herself in my eyes today with the best one sentence description of Bush's foreign policy that I have seen yet: "Bush officials believe that making the world more scared of us is the best way to make us safer and less scared." I think her description is right on, but I don't buy the reasoning -- in fact I believe that the opposite is true. If people who disagree with American policies think that America doesn't listen to anybody and willing to use overwhelming military force at its sole discretion, what kind of tactics are they likely to use to oppose American policies? Terrorism. The historical record on stamping out terrorism solely by the use of force, without any attempt to satisfy the complaints harnessed by the terrorists, is terrible. Just ask anyone from Ireland or Israel. Being the biggest bully doesn't mean you that you won't get hurt, it just means that you won't get punched in the face. It provides no guarantees for your back or your genitalia....

Oregon Gets Biggest Hotspot

Oregon Gets Biggest Hotspot 02/10/2004 02:40 AM
It's always worrisome to qualify networks as the "biggest" but in this case I'd bet that eastern Oregon really does have the biggest hotspot in the country: Yesterday, Boardman and Hermiston, Ore. turned on a 600-square-mile hotspot. The network came about through a public/private initiative and was built by EZ Wireless. The network will be used by the Morrow County Emergency Management and Chemical Stockpile Emergency Preparedness Program, the police force, and citizens. Initially, it will cover 600 square miles which includes four counties and seven cities, some in Washington. The second phase, which should be complete this summer, will add another seven cities. The press release isn't online and any news organizations in the area either don't post the stories online or require subscriptions from visitors wanting to read the stories online....

World's biggest Devo fan

World's biggest Devo fan 04/09/2005 03:27 PM
Xeni Jardin: Profile of Michael Pilmer, a 38-year-old Devo fanatic whose awesome collection of band memorabilia consists of thousands of items. He's now webmaster for the Devo website. Boing Boing reader (and my old-school pal) Charles O'Donovan says, "This guy used to work for Alienskin Software who make awesome plugins for Photoshop. I met him a few years ago."

Snip from story:

The little white house in Oakwood doesn't look like a shrine. But step through the door and into Michael Pilmer's world. Gaze in awe at the massive autographed poster of Devo above the dining room table, the authentic Devo concert costumes, the Devo pins and shirts and ephemera carefully arrayed throughout the house.

Yes, here in Raleigh, half a block from Oakwood Cemetery, is the planet's biggest collection of artifacts from the band best known for the 1980 hit "Whip It."

"It's the ADD that keeps me going, I guess," says Pilmer, 38, a tall, lanky redhead (it's dyed) in a homemade T-shirt with Mickey Mouse sitting on a toilet. "I'm definitely kind of obsessive, so I just figured I would channel that into one thing."
