Ideas Born from a Dieing Neural Network?

Ideas Born from a Dieing Neural Network? 02/10/2004 03:00 AM
The Washington Post has an extremely interesting article about Stephen Thaler's Creativity Machine. The Creativity Machine is a new kind of Neural Network from Imagination Engines, Inc. Basically, it's like you take a Neural Network and fully train it, then you go back and randomly kill off a few nodes until it starts to hallucinate causing it to have a sort of near death experience. Either it will go off on a really bad trip, or it might cause it to have an imagination and generate something new like the works of Shakespeare (as if that were a new thing). Apparently, by killing off a few neurons it causes some Neural Nets to go noisy and perhaps start thinking and figuring out new ideas? I'm not sure I believe it, but it seems Steven Thaler figured out that by doing this new technique and forcing anomolies, all sorts of new innovative ideas and dreams can be born like harder substances than diamonds and bad christmas carols, or perhaps even the recipe for mom's pudding and the answer to everything before they can shut it off. With all of these new deep thoughts being generated, one could wish that they could come up with the right questions for the answers it gives (hey, that's sort of like Jeopardy). For that matter what would a neural net's dieing wish be? (BTW, happy love your robot day - Feb 7th!)

Sf short story about upselling in neural

Cory Doctorow: Jeremy sez, "I've posted January's story to Futurismic, called 'Consensus Building.' This is another entry from Tom Doyle (author of September's 'Art's Appreciation'. It's a mean-spirited story about naked ambition, greed and the fungibility of computer-assisted memory. We've also re-opened Futurismic for fiction submissions. We've increased our permissible word limit to 15,000 and we're going to stay open until we get a year's worth of stories. Our guidelines are here and our web form for submitting is here."

Futurismic's publishing some amazing science fiction and this story doesn't disappoint. It's a great 10 minute read, perfect for the Web.

As always, she examined herself in the mirror, searching for vulnerability. She was rewarded by the usual view: an attractively fit, Slavic cheek-boned thirty-something who could still pass for twenty-something.

"I could lose some weight," she thought. But no, she hadn't really thought that. It was a chip idea. She consciously interfaced with the AI to avoid further confusion. "What the fuck are you talking about? I look great."

"You could lose a few pounds." The voice was a more clinical version of her own. "And your skin could do with some work, too. I can assist."

"No, thank you. Resume normal." She concentrated on getting ready for work, but the ritual had been tainted. Despite herself, she felt larger, flabbier, distinctly less attractive. To compensate, she deliberately dressed sexier than her usual businesslike attire, with shorter skirt and flashier blouse, and forced her hair to have a good day. She refused to submit to moods as a matter of policy.

Another thought tugged at her mind. "You could really use a new outfit." The tone was that of an enthused continental fashion designer.

Lightweight Business Models

Lightweight Business Models 09/22/2004 11:17 PM

The workshop that Jason Fried and myself will be giving at Web 2.0 is entitled "Lightweight Business Models". I'm liking that title more and more as we approach the event.

What will be interesting to see - will be all the Web 1.0 folks meeting all the Web 2.0 folks. Lots of announcements, schmoozing, networking and (hopefully) kai-seki.

I have these vivid memories of the Nikko - doing kai-seki for hours with various Japanese emissaries in the late 80's - when money was no object.

I don't necessarily see the Web 2.0 as a platform with JUST eBay, Amazon or Google - but it's nice to have them there. But it's also nice to have Technorati, Sxip and Flickr.

:-)

The idea of workshop is that there are all these 'little' programs out there that when connected together (via open standards) can create a decentralized mesh of functionality united around new kinds of micro-content.

Here's John Battelle's post....

web2Over at O'Reilly, Tim's posted his thoughts on why Web 2.0 is a meme with legs, and he's inviting feedback from his readers on what they'd like to see asked of all the speakers we have coming to converse. I'd like to do the same - you guys have always kept me honest, and the conference is really shaping up to be something else again. As Tim puts it:

I'm talking about the emergence of what I've started to call Web 2.0, the internet as platform. We heard about that idea back in the late 90s, at the height of the browser wars, but that turned out to be a false alarm. But I believe we're now starting the third age of the internet -- the first being the telnet-era command line internet, the second the web -- and the third, well, that tale grows in the telling. It's about the way that open source and the open standards of the web are commoditizing many categories of infrastructure software, driving value instead to the data and business processes layered on top of (or within) that software; it's about the way that web sites like eBay, Amazon, and Google are becoming platforms with rich add-on developer communities; it's about the way that network effects and data, rather than software APIs, are the new tools of customer lock-in; it's about the way that to be successful, software today needs to work above the level of a single device; it's about the way that the Microsofts and Intels of tomorrow are once again going to blindside established players because all the rules of business are changing.

Time and again as I report in this space, I'm struck by how different this time round is from the late 1990s. For example, today I spoke with Jeff Weber, who runs USAToday's digital publishing efforts, and we had a robust conversation about publishing models, new and old. I was part of the first wave of "new media" in the 90s, and we were convinced that the world was changing, but wrong in the timing and execution. Now, a whole host of "lightweight publishers" have sprung up, and they are challenging and undermining the entire cost structure and business model of old line publishers. This time, it's real. Weber pointed out to me that Yahoo News, which is twice as big as USAToday.com, and has just 11 employees. Then there's craigslist, with more traffic than nearly anyone, and only 20 or so employees. How do they do that? They've got a very Web 2.0, lightweight business model, that's how (and Yahoo aggregates content, then creates interfaces, of course). Over and over, in so many aspects of industry, we see this happening - travel, finance, media, entertainment, retail. It's exciting, and it's fun.

At Web 2.0, we're going to talk about all this, and (this will be the last time, I promise) I'd really like to see you all there. I still have a limited number of discount codes to dole out, first come, first served (jbat at battellemedia dot com). The event is October 5-7, in San Francisco at the Hotel Nikko.

Even if you can't make it, check out the program and let me know what you'd like to see asked of the speakers. I hope to see you there!

Lightweight Languages 2 Conference

Lightweight Languages 2 Conference 03/13/2003 10:16 AM
This Saturday, I attended the LL2 conference at MIT. LL2 is dedicated to "lightweight" programming languages, a delibrately loose category including (1) any pleasant, easy-to-use scripting language and (2) any academic language which makes it easier to prototype and write software quickly. LL2 is a small, informal workshop with audience participation. The attendees are a diverse bunch, and enjoy goring each other's sacred cows. You have been warned.

Greasemonkey as a lightweight
intermediary

Greasemonkey as a lightweight
intermediary
03/30/2005 03:05 PM

In The architecture of intermediation, Jon Udell discusses the need for a mechanism for a high-level tool for adding custom features to web applications. In Jon's case, he wants to add a private bookmarks feature to del.icio.us. Jon thought about using a web proxy to intercept and modify del.icio.us pages, but ruled it out as too low-level.

Jon, you need Greasemonkey.

The latest release of the swiss army knife of Firefox extensions adds support for cross-domain XMLHttpRequest calls from greasemonkey scripts. What that means is that you can create a user script (a short JavaScript that will be executed whenever your browser loads specific pages) that can then pull extra data in from another server. This new ability is described in the greasemonkey documentation.

I'm using this for my final year project, a decentralised web annotation system that lets you annotate pages, storing your annotations locally and then sharing your public annotations as a feed (similar to the way RSS aggregators work). The trick there is to run a local web server on some port, then have the Greasemonkey user script (eventually a full extension) communicate with that local server to store and retrieve data. I'm using Ruby on Rails' built in WEBrick server to prototype the service, and it's working a treat.

This architecture could be easily adapted to add private bookmarks to del.icio.us - or to add any number of cool features to any number of other sites. Here's another example: Google's Desktop Search integrates results from your local drive with the search results page on Google. Using greasemonkey and a local web server tied in to OS X Tiger's Spotlight indexer, you could add this functionality to any search site you wanted to. Just be sure to lock down the web server to only serve requests from localhost, to avoid sharing search results for your data with anyone on the network who can see your machine.

When people asked me what I was excited about at SxSW, one of my answers was Greasemonkey. This kind of stuff is the reason why.

1 Million Free Songs for Download

1 Million Free Songs for Download 07/29/2004 03:28 PM

In my experience, most of the RIAA-hating nerds who swear they'll never to buy another album again continue to download copyrighted, RIAA-financed music from less-than-legal sources (and I've done it, too, so simmer down). What's crazy, though, is that if you really don't want to bend any laws, there is a wealth of free music online -- and The Red Ferret Journal just set up a Wiki (a user-edited web page) to make it even easier. There are hundreds of thousands of freely downloadable songs on the websites listed (some of them are even not techno) and thousands more non-RIAA-backed labels selling songs, too -- so if you really want to fill up that iPod without "stealing music," you do have an option to do so.

Mainly, though, I just wanted you to feel extra guilty when you download RIAA music anyway.

Stross's magnificent ACCELERANDO as a
free CC download
06/17/2005 03:35 PM
Cory Doctorow: Charlie Stross's brilliant novel Accelerando is available as a free Creative Commons download! This novel collects and bridges all of his Hugo-nominated Manfred Macx stories, published over the last several years in Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine. Charlie is a wild talent, and he writes like the love-child of Vernor Vinge, Neal Stephenson and Hunter S Thompson. Once you start this book, you won't be able to stop.
Manfred's on the road again, making strangers rich.

It's a hot summer Tuesday, and he's standing in the plaza in front of the Centraal Station with his eyeballs powered up and the sunlight jangling off the canal, motor scooters and kamikaze cyclists whizzing past and tourists chattering on every side. The square smells of water and dirt and hot metal and the fart-laden exhaust fumes of cold catalytic converters; the bells of trams ding in the background, and birds flock overhead. He glances up and grabs a pigeon, crops the shot, and squirts it at his weblog to show he's arrived. The bandwidth is good here, he realizes; and it's not just the bandwidth, it's the whole scene. Amsterdam is making him feel wanted already, even though he's fresh off the train from Schiphol: He's infected with the dynamic optimism of another time zone, another city. If the mood holds, someone out there is going to become very rich indeed.

He wonders who it's going to be.

* * *

Manfred sits on a stool out in the car park at the Brouwerij 't IJ, watching the articulated buses go by and drinking a third of a liter of lip-curlingly sour gueuze. His channels are jabbering away in a corner of his head-up display, throwing compressed infobursts of filtered press releases at him. They compete for his attention, bickering and rudely waving in front of the scenery. A couple of punks – maybe local, but more likely drifters lured to Amsterdam by the magnetic field of tolerance the Dutch beam across Europe like a pulsar – are laughing and chatting by a couple of battered mopeds in the far corner. A tourist boat putters by in the canal; the sails of the huge windmill overhead cast long, cool shadows across the road. The windmill is a machine for lifting water, turning wind power into dry land: trading energy for space, sixteenth-century style. Manfred is waiting for an invite to a party where he's going to meet a man he can talk to about trading energy for space, twenty-first-century style, and forget about his personal problems.

He's ignoring the instant messenger boxes, enjoying some low-bandwidth, high-sensation time with his beer and the pigeons, when a woman walks up to him, and says his name: "Manfred Macx?"

He glances up. The courier is an Effective Cyclist, all wind-burned smooth-running muscles clad in a paean to polymer technology: electric blue lycra and wasp yellow carbonate with a light speckling of anti collision LEDs and tight-packed air bags. She holds out a box for him. He pauses a moment, struck by the degree to which she resembles Pam, his ex-fiance.
