Semistructured Query-by-Example
03/16/2003 04:21 AMI just stumbled across this experimental Query language for XML, called
XCerpt. It is example-based variable binding, and looks
very much like Prolog queries over a triples database, or like Redland's QBE
would look if they used RDF/XML syntax instead of triples. Such
query syntaxes seem popular for graph queries, but I'm not sure if
they are really the best for users.
In any case, the paper on XCerpt was interesting. Although
XQuery is not as "imperative" as the paper wants you to believe,
XCerpt really does blur the line between "data" and "code" more than
XQuery does. It makes you want to use it, because it hints
seductively that code and data are really the same thing.

07/03/2004 12:24 AMCC search query breakdown
CC search query breakdown
06/17/2005 05:02 PMIn March we posted a CC search index
breakdown showing what license properties publishers have chosen
to use, based on content crawled for our search engine.
The following table has corresponding numbers for search engine
queries. Given a format-specific query, what percentage of users
limit results to works that may be used commercially, to make
derivative works, or both?
| Wants commercial use | Wants derivative
works | Wants both |
| Audio | 32 | 38 | 20 |
| Image | 39 | 41 | 27 |
| Interactive | 34 | 43 | 26 |
| Text | 37 | 41 | 30 |
| Video | 25 | 32 | 16 |
| All | 43 | 44 | 38 |
"All" above includes searches that do not specify a format (63% of
searches). Such searchers seem to be more interested in commercial use
and derivative works permissions than people searching for a specific
format. People searching for video content appear least interested in
both permissions. Interestingly this roughly mirrors rights granted by
creators: in the aforementioned search index
breakdown licensors of video content appeared to opt for less
liberal licenses than licensors of other content.

My new
quer
y page invites you to try writing your own queries, and a few
adventurous souls have been doing just that. As I've mentioned before,
I'm no world-class expert on this subject, but as I build up a corpus
of searchable data on the one hand, and a set of canned and modifiable
queries on the other, I'm learning. Indeed, one of my goals for the
query page is to serve as a tutorial and playground, a place where
folks (me included) can get ideas about what kinds of XHTML elements
they might include in their own content, and how those elements could
interact with XPath queries.
