Apple Stores in Mass. open 24 hours for
sales tax holiday
08/11/2004 01:42 PM
Ordinarily Massachusetts charges a 5 percent sales tax, but the Commonwealth has dubbed Saturday, August 14, 2004 a sales tax holiday. On that day, purchases of "tangible personal property costing $2,500 or less" are exempt from state sales tax. Apple has three retail stores in the state, and they're celebrating the sales tax holiday by remaining open for 24 hours on Saturday -- opening at 12:01 AM and closing at 11:59 PM in all three stores. Apple's retail stores are located at the CambridgeSide Galleria in Cambridge, the Chestnut Hill Mall in Chestnut Hill and the Northshore Mall in Peabody. You can find more information and directions to the stores from Apple's retail store Web page.

FCC Says Software Must be Open to FBI

FCC Says Software Must be Open to FBI 08/04/2004 01:45 PM
  • Cnet: Feds back wiretap rules for Internet. Broadband providers and Internet phone services must comply with requirements designed for the traditional phone network, the Federal Communications Commission said in a preliminary decision Wednesday. The 5-0 vote by the FCC is a major step toward regulations designed to help police and spy agencies eavesdrop on all forms of high-speed Internet access, including cable modems, wireless, satellite and broadband over power lines.
  • This is a stunningly bad decision, and it is going to take us down a road we've already traveled. It ignores reality. Consider Skype, which encrypts calls from end to end. It runs on peer-to-peer networks. In other words, law enforcement can't eavesdrop -- because VOIP is, for all practical purposes, a software application. Unless we have new laws banning the private use of strong encryption, the FCC/FBI alliance here just means the bad guys will move their communications -- if they haven't already -- to services that can't be tapped. Then, only average folks will be monitored. My guess is that we're going to have to fight the encryption battle all over again. The government really doesn't believe in free (as in freedom) communications. This will get ugly.

Whenever I mention open source software, or the Linux operating system, I can be sure of getting lots of "interesting" mail in my inbox. There's a good bit of confusion about open source software among members of the general public, journalists of the general press and even among those of us who should know better.

Free software and Open Source: The freedom Debate and Its Consequences By Mathias Klang
    ht tp://www.firstmonday.org/issues/issue10_3/klang/index.html

    Abstract:
To most outsiders the ethics of software is not something usually considered. To most proficient computer users with a passing interest in this question the ethics of software is recognised as one of the fundamental questions in the digital rights area. To most of the latter, terms such as free software, open source, and their derivatives (FLOSS, FOSS, Software Freedom) are interchangeable. Choosing one over the other is a matter of taste rather than politics. However, to most insiders the
question is not one of taste. There is a fundamental difference between the two areas even if they share a similar root. Free software is not the same as open source. The two groups differ in their fundamental philosophical approach to software and its importance to society as a whole. This paper examines the two groups’ differing philosophies and explores how their actions have affected software development, access to fundamental software infrastructure, and the development of the concept of freedom.

What happens when the effectiveness of your favorite search engine turns against you, when it becomes almost too effective to be useful, giving you so much information that you're not sure where to start?... Well, my overworked friend, you're in luck. Today, I'll be covering the holy grail of information gathering: asking people... In the process, I will also show you some of the better locations to begin your searches and give you a few pointers in getting the most out of your queries.

As an occasional user of Linux, and someone in the software industry, I've followed the "Open Source" movement for quite some time. To a minority, Open Source Software (specifically GPL licensed Open Source Software) represents an ideological and sociological movement, something that will change the world. To the majority, it is simply a way to get cool and useful software without going through the expense of buying, or the hassle of pirating it.

Dan Farber reports from the OSBC here in SF and let's us know what Larry Augustimn said. He's identified specific models and shown how companies are asking their clients to pay them to convince them to hire them.

    That is so beautiful.

And watch Doc's IT Garage for more goings on in this area. It's time to cash in and kick the old school - out. I guess the next scene is Portland Aug. 1-4 at OSCON.

BTW Dan Farber is one of my favorite peeps.
