Tatra Mac G4

Tatra Mac G4 04/10/2004 10:54 PM

What do you get when you mix an air-cooled V8 powered sedan with a G4 Mac? The Tatra Mac G4, a combination GPS navigaton system, MP3 player, movie player, game machine, built into a Czech-built Tatra 613. It even has its own network with ethernet ports in the armrests, and connects to the Internet either through WiFi or GPRS, whichever is available.

Now why don't more cars come with this sort of gear as standard equipment? Or at least as an aftermarket add-on?

JOEL JOHNSON -- Computers in cars aren't new; hell, you can buy one from Sony or Pioneer these days, if you want. But this homebrew job, 'the Tatra Mac G4,' is extraordinarily well put-together, right down to the live ethernet ports in the arm rest and the custom software that...

One vibration-damped cabinet contains the platter and tone-arm, the other holds the motor and phono preamp. It's just $15,500... not including the equally-fetishistic Airtangent 2002 air bearing tonearm at $11,500. Link (via Hy Phi)

Many folks wouldn't want to be reminded how easy it is to convert sparse input into a detailed profile that includes a phone number, a street address, a satellite photo, and driving directions. Re-entering the basic facts each time perpetuates an illusion of privacy. Yet the reality, for many of us, is that these facts are public.

Since I haven't told Google (or any other directories) to delete my records, I've implicitly given permission for Web applications to use that data. Let me now make that permission explicit. I'd be happy if a Web form made intelligent use of public information about me.

I'd be even happier if I could control the source of that data. Public information is a poorly defined concept, after all. There are online directories that still remember an address I vacated five years ago. I'd like to maintain the facts about me that I deem public. When applications need those facts, I'd like to refer them to a service that dispenses them. [Full story at InfoWorld.com]

Tire Tagz: Persistence of Vision for
Wheels

Tire Tagz: Persistence of Vision for
Wheels
04/12/2005 07:44 AM

unit_howtoattach.jpgI'm not sure how many horsepower glowing Batman logos add to a car, but I'm sure these Tire Tagz are exactly the sort of thing that will soon be provided with pastel orange Mitsubishi Eclipses right from the factory. Tire Tagz are persistence of vision clips that plug right into your wheel, spinning amber LEDs to create a static image. The company claims they'll be legal on the roads, since they are the regulation amber color mandated for all side-mounted lights, but I wouldn't be surprised if you get a few tickets to go along with your stares.

To their credit, the Tire Tagz look pretty well thought-out, with a locking mechanism and bundled Windows software for creating and uploading your own patterns. When they launch this month (according to their site) I'd imagine they'll be very popular with tuners for a few months, or at least until Advance Auto Parts makes a $5 knock-off version. As for the Tire Tags price, that's anybody's guess—their online shop is not actually online. (Thanks, Steve!)
