Chernobyl survivor interview - Over at the New Scientist site
Alexander Yuvchenko (one of the few surviving workers at the site)
talks about the day Chernobyl went kablooie.
"...we walked outside. What we saw was terrifying. Everything
that could be destroyed had been. The entire water coolant system was
gone. The right-hand side of the reactor hall had been completely
destroyed, and on the left the pipes were just hanging."
"From where I stood I could see a huge beam of projected light
flooding up into infinity from the reactor. It was like a laser light,
caused by the ionisation of the air. It was light-bluish, and it was
very beautiful. I watched it for several seconds. If I'd stood there
for just a few minutes I would probably have died on the spot..."

Surviving Two Weeks With No Internet
Surviving Two Weeks With No Internet
09/22/2004 04:20 AMJust how much do you rely on the internet on a daily basis? There are
some people who can easily leave the internet completely behind when
on vacation. However, what about doing everyday things that you've
come to rely on it for? An experiment sponsored by Yahoo had 28
people
give up the internet for two weeks to see how they coped. Not
everyone took it so well. They increased usage of other media like
the telephone, television and movies to replace the missing internet.
One couple claims their phone bill tripled. While the lack of email
was definitely a nuisance, it was "the little things" that really
seemed to get to some. Not being able to get directions online and
(the most embarrassing situation, apparently) not knowing how to boil
an egg, and having no idea where to go to figure it out seemed to be
the biggest problem. Honestly, though, for all the talk about people
being "addicted" to the internet, this suggests that's not the case at
all for the (small) group of people involved in this experiment. It's
just that they find the internet useful in getting random every day
tasks done.

Surviving the Political Season
09/07/2004 02:41 PMI've been completely frustrated with the level of political discourse
this year here in the US. With only two months left in the election,
neither candidate has come forward and provided a detailed plan for
what they'd like to see happen for the future. "I'll put more money in
the pockets of the working family" really isn't helping me make any
decisions.
However, there are a couple of good sites online that can help you cut
through the misleading statements that the candidates are making in
their bids to snow their way into office.

In 1932, there were an estimated 150 pinball-machine

trajectory for years. As recently as the early 1990s, the industry
churned out more than 100,000 machines annually.

.NET reality check
.NET reality check
01/27/2004 02:51 PM
There's been some pushback recently, in the .NET blogging community,
about Microsoft's habit of living in the future. For example:
It is abundantly frustrating to be keeping up with you guys right now.
We out here in the real world do not use Longhorn, do not have access
to Longhorn (not in a way we can trust for production), and we cannot
even begin to test out these great new technologies until version 1.0
(or 2.0 for those that wish to stay sane). I know there's probably
not a whole lot you can do, but this is a plea to you from someone "in
the field". My job is to work on the architecture team as well as
implement solutions for a large-scale commercial website using .NET.
I use this stuff all day every day, but I use the 1.1 release bits.
Here's my point, enough with the "this Whidbey, Longhorn, XAML is so
cool you should stop whatever it is you are doing and use it". Small
problem, we can't. Please help us by remembering that we're still
using the release bits, not the latest technology. [Michael Earls]
In the spirit of Michael's plea, I'm working on an upcoming article in
which I'll compare what was promised for the .NET platform (er,
framework), two and three years ago, with the current reality as it
exists today. Examples of the kinds of issues I want to consider:
...Reality left behind

08/31/2004 10:21 PMAfter a lot of war talk last night, the Republicans are getting back
to the "compassionate conservatism" theme -- a clever and probably
necessary strategy for Bush two months from Election Day when more
Americans think his opponent understands people like them. Helping to
make Bush's case: Education Secretary Rod Paige. (You may remember
Paige's outrageous comments earlier this year likening the nation's
largest teachers union to a "
terrorist organization.")

Test Dynamics
Test Dynamics
10/28/2003 11:07 PMRecently I was discussing with one of our developers the impact
that managed code is having on the product groups. For a group
like mine, which develops APIs, the ratio of dev to test is usually
1:1; in other words, one tester for every dev. However, with the
advent of managed code, our devs are somewhere close to twice as
productive as before -- this means that one dev can overwhelm a tester
pretty quickly. And although managed code tends to be
significantly less buggy, the testers still need to do just as much
testing -- testing isn't the sort of thing you can stop just because
you aren't finding many bugs. In fact, the ever-increasing
emphasis on quality for enterprise customers and security testing
means that testers will be expected to do more testing than
before. All of this adds up to a trend where the average product
group is going to be spending at least 150% more on test resources
than dev resources in the near future.
At least, that's my prediction. I find the
whole idea has many interesting implications. For example,
we will be spending a larger portion of the budget on test, and this
will probably coincide with a reduction in support costs --
but much of the quality improvements will be due to managed code
rather than increased test expenditures.
On the other hand, there is always the possibility that the
ever-increasing test expenditures will not coincide with a
reduction in the number or severity of high-profile security and
quality incidents. In fact, if you were to graph the number of
security incidents over time on one line of a graph and the average
test expenditures over time on another line, I suspect that the graph
of the most recent years would look rather depressing.
Optimistic thinking would suggest that the increase in security
incidents is due to heightened attention to security and will level
off as investments due to training and testing eventually bear
fruit. But it's going to be interesting to observe this.
Another interesting graph would show marketing expenditures from
1995 to present on one line, and corresponding customer
perception/satisfaction on another.
