Palm drops the Mac

Palm drops the Mac 02/12/2004 06:20 PM
According to this article at Brighthand, Palm have announced that Palm OS 6 (codenamed Cobalt) will not support the Mac platform —
...PalmSource isn't developing a Mac version of the Palm Desktop. As the way the PIM apps work has changed significantly, this means Mac users won't be able to HotSync without third-party software.
This is a blow for Mac-owning Palm PDA users, although it's stoked those old fires suggesting that Apple may be ready to announce a PDA of it's own. John Manzione writes on MacNetv2
Apple will deflect this Palm bullet because they will soon introduce a new product that will do for the handheld market what the iPod has done for MP3 players.
A Jonathan Ive-designed PDA? Now I'd love to see that.

Spolsky Drops the Big One

Spolsky Drops the Big One 06/17/2004 03:48 AM
Joel Spolsky posted an astounding essay a few days ago that I somehow missed. I don’t agree with every paragraph, but every paragraph is worth reading. If I may pick one minor point out for a bit of special highlighting: We’ve had good full-text search technology since the Seventies, and in the last ten years more or less everybody has become a regular user of full-text search. Why isn’t there good built-in full-text desktop search available right now today on both OS X and Windows, out of the box? (Most of the article isn’t about search, most of it’s about why the Windows API is dying on the vine; don’t miss it.)

419 Scammer Charges Dropped

419 Scammer Charges Dropped 11/12/2003 03:18 PM
Last week we had the story of how a woman who received a 419 Nigerian scam email played along to try to track down the scammers. When someone was sent to her to pick up the money, he was arrested. As was pointed out at the time, it sounds as though this guy was just a courier and not the actual scammer - but, in theory should be able to help authorities find the real scammers. Instead, though, they've released him without any charges being filed - and without an explanation. The woman who set up the sting is furious and claims this is why such scams continue. Of course, if the guy really is just the courier there probably isn't too much they can charge him with. Even if they did charge him with some small crime for helping out, it wouldn't do much to stop the scam anyway. Perhaps, in releasing him, they're going to use him to get more information about the real scammers.

Doonesbury to be dropped for being "too
controversial"
07/23/2004 02:39 AM
The Continental Features comics syndicate has announced that it will be dropping Doonesbury because the strip is "too controversial" (lately, Trudeau has been using the strip to criticise the Iraq War and Fox News).
The Continental head said he doesn't know exactly when "Doonesbury" will leave the package; he's currently polling clients to see if they want to replace it with "Agnes," "Get Fuzzy," "Pickles," "Zits," or another comic.

Music Sales Haven't Really Dropped

Music Sales Haven't Really Dropped 05/13/2004 06:34 PM
New Media Musings points us to a week old article showing how the RIAA fudges CD sales figures to show they're dropping when they're actually increasing. It turns out that the RIAA used numbers that only show CD shipments to stores - and not how many CDs were actually purchased. In other words, they're using a number they have some control over. However, back in the real world, consumers are actually buying more CDs. Also, the article notes that stores are realizing they don't need to carry as much inventory, as they can go with more of a "just-in-time" supply chain model. In other words, these fewer shipments also mean that the industry is even more profitable than before. The fact that there are fewer shipments just means the industry has become more efficient. Unfortunately, this doesn't fit with the RIAA's view of the world, so they had to come up with a different method to maintain the fiction that they're selling.

US military leaflets dropped over Iraq,
take two.
03/20/2003 08:33 AM
US-led forces have air-dropped 17 million leaflets over Iraq this year, and nearly two million were dumped over southern Iraq yesterday. This gallery displays the six types dropped yesterday -- new ones since the last time we blogged this. From a CENTCOM press release:
Three contained several references for Iraqis to tune to radio frequencies where Coalition forces are broadcasting information about United Nations Security Council Resolution 1441, United Nations weapons inspectors in Iraq, Iraqi President Saddam Hussein's reign and other topics. Another type of leaflet warned Iraqi troops not to use weapons of mass destruction, emphasizing that "unit commanders will be held accountable for non-compliance." One leaflet warned Iraqi troops that the Coalition will destroy any viable military targets and does not wish to destroy any Iraqi landmarks, and that the "Coalition forces do not wish to harm the noble people of Iraq. To ensure your safety, avoid areas occupied by military personnel." One more leaflet type told Iraqi troops "not risk their life and the life of their comrades," and to "leave now, go home, and learn, grow, prosper."
