The sentencing this week of a Texas man was a notable victory for the U.S. government in its fight against a form of online fraud known as "phishing." However, a recent surge in such scams highlights the need for more than customer education, with some computer security experts calling for major changes in the way sensitive information is exchanged online.

Consumer Group Calls for Probe of
'Rip-Off' ITunes

Apple’s British iTunes customers are paying 17 percent more per song than other iTunes users. This is according to a statement made on Wednesday by a European consumer watch group - The Consumers’ Association. They want Apple to lower the prices and bring it into line with it's other global stores.

Not too long ago, Apple launched its successful iTunes music store overseas (in June), slowly expanding its online music stores market share. The pricing was setup to be very similar to that used in the United Sates - 99c / song. In Germany and France songs are 99 euro cents per track, and 79 pence per track in the UK. The Consumers’ Association claims that British iTunes customers are paying 17 percent more than other overseas countries (Germany, France), which they believe is unfair for British consumers to pay. Until sufficient evidence is produced that Apple is ripping off its British customers nothings going to happen.

What's odd about this story is that iTunes is in fact cheaper than a majority of its rivals online music store. When compared to Napster, iTunes is more than 20 percent cheaper. However, that said, Apple can't use the traditional argument / excuse for this - costs are specific to countries, and thus prices are; the operation is done online, and centrally. The argument doesn't hold for the "e-business" example. Until Apple starts making serious money on the store, it's unlikely to give in to any price pressure. That said, the EU might take interest in a similar manner to their investigations into car companies doing similar pricing schemes in the 90s.

Panorama 0.18 now available

Panorama 0.18 now available 01/03/2003 12:49 AM
Panorama is a framework for 3D graphics production. This will include modeling, rendering, animating, post-processing, etc. Animation is not currently supported, but will be added soon. It is officially part of the GNU project. Panorama 0.18 is now available for download. https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=7862 Before I get a lot of questions, I'll state here why I jumped some numbers in the versions. The ultimate goal of this project is to eventually end up stable, with version 1.0. As such, I believe that there was enough added and fixed as to further the number more than 1 notch. There is another version being developed in CVS (0.19), which is another large leap, but I don't want to end up with numbers which are prematurely high. As a potential roadmap, here's how I see the versions stacking up: 0.25 -- Time added, so that objects, textures, lights, etc. can vary over time. 0.50 -- Plugin system rewritten and functional for both *nix and Win32 (possibly other OSs), most objects verified. 0.75 -- Multiple SDLs (scene description languages), with at least one compatible to POV (http://www.povray.org). 0.90 -- Partially functioning GUIs for X (GTK--), Win32, and possibly other windowing systems. These will have full modeling capabilities. 1.00 -- Stable. Objects verfied to work, GUIs perform nicely, animation working correctly. These numbers are not fixed, and the order of completed features may be rearranged. It is, indeed, a very lofty goal. At the rate things have been progressing for the past 2 years, it will probably take me another 8 years for panorama to become stable, unless I can find some help. Questions or comments are welcomed.

This week's featured content is Rick Prelinger's new film Panorama Ephemera, produced entirely with short government clips from the 1940s-1970s. For those in the Bay Area, it will be shown at the San Francisco Cinematheque on Sunday, June 13 at 7:30 pm. The clips range from the everyday normal to the absolutely bizarre and together form an amusing collage of how life used to be.

An Unusual Use for Panorama

An Unusual Use for Panorama 04/11/2005 08:22 PM
Adam C. Engst (~580 words)

I'm in the process of cleaning up some LetterRip Pro-based mailing lists in preparation for moving them to Web Crossing, and in doing so, I was faced with the age-old problem of determining which bouncing addresses to remove. After all, if an address bounces a few times, it's probably bad, but if it bounces only a single time, the problem is probably temporary. LetterRip Pro automatically generates lists of addresses that bounced after the last list message went out; the trick is figuring out which addresses appeared more than once. I pondered the problem briefly before realizing that ProVUE's Panorama database was just the ticket. (See "When You Need a Panoramic View" in TidBITS-770.) After all, what were these email addresses but records in a very simple database?

Are Speakerphone Mobile Calls Less
Annoying Than Regular Calls?

Are Speakerphone Mobile Calls Less
Annoying Than Regular Calls?
04/21/2004 03:53 PM
Last week we noted a new study saying that people get annoyed with others talking on mobile phones because they only hear one half of the conversation. At the time, I wrote that this made sense as periods of silence followed by talking are a lot more jarring to the passive listener. However, this BBC report claims that the reason for the annoyance is that it shows that we're more curious about what the other party is saying. I'm not sure I buy that. It seems much more likely that it's the variability in noise, from silent to noisy rather than any form of curiosity. When the conversation is at a constant hum (even when loud), it's much easier to tune it out. Still, the findings do go against the opinion many people have expressed that things like "push-to-talk" where the phone usually acts as a speaker phone would be more annoying since we get to hear both sides of the conversation. In fact, the researchers behind the study are even suggesting that mobile phone makers may want to explore adding speaker phones to more phones to make them less annoying. Of course, the study only set up two conditions: a conversation on a mobile phone and a face-to-face conversation. They didn't test the speaker phone situation to see how annoying that was. It's possible that the annoyance factor comes from the inability to make use of body language to express concepts as well, leading to a different tone of voice.
